place in your life where you will be a warrior. You must decide how you’re willing to fight for the world you want. You’re being asked to take out your sword and use it to help create a new world. It’s time to stop and make an issue of things that are not right in your world. We all have a sword, which is represented by Mars in our charts. It doesn’t matter what type of sword you have. What matters is that you use it to take actions that will create a better world. In some cases, this means standing up for yourself. In other cases, this means you’re standing up for a particular cause, principle, or for someone who cannot stand up for themselves, such as children or elderly people. The key thing to remember in all these situations is that whatever happens to you, or anyone else, happens to all of us. We cannot get to a world of peace while we allow others to abuse us or anyone else. Using your sword might look like you’re signing petitions online, donating to important causes, showing up at protests, writing letters or e-mails, boycotting certain companies, and speaking up when you may have squelched your feelings in the past. You may decide to fight for a safer world by organizing your neighborhood for emergency preparedness training with your city or town’s program. With these cycles, earth changes are very strong now through 2015. How can you use your sword to create peace if you’re angry? Doesn’t adding our anger make that less likely? Actually, anger is a higher vibration than squelching our anger or frustration. That’s because when we stuff those emotions, we end up depressed. Our anger turns inward and that lowers our vibration. In order to raise the vibration of the planet so we can get to peace, we need to stop stuffing negative emotions. We need to stop being complacent and stand up for what we want. That will raise the vibration of the entire planet. Once we get past allowing others to do whatever they want to us, we can then focus on raising the vibration to a higher level. The universe wants us to use these energies to fight for a better world now. What’s happening in the Middle East is raising the vibration of the entire planet. People are standing up and demanding democracy. I ask you, if the entire Middle East can wake up and risk their lives, is it possible that we Americans could wake up too? We’re the democracy model for the rest of the world. So how can we allow that we’ve given up our own right to a fair trial? How can we be proud of the largest redistribution of wealth to bankers who caused a large portion of the middle class to go bankrupt? When will we decide that the USA doesn’t need to owe trillions of dollars to the Federal Reserve, because we’re renting our money from them? There are thousands of issues like this that go unchallenged every day in governments, schools, our health care system, the legal system, and corporations because we allow others to take advantage of ourselves and the earth. The universe, with this set of energies,

is telling us that has to stop. We must stand up and fight for the world we want to have, or we’ll lose our chance to create peace, and a responsible, sustainable world. Remember this: Whenever you fight, never fight against anything, as you will only give it more energy. Always fight for what you want. On March 9, we entered the last underworld or transformation period of the Mayan calendar. During this last period of 234 days, we’ll develop unity consciousness. We’ll learn that all life on this planet is

related, all part of the divine energy that created this universe. We’ll understand deeply that whatever happens to anyone happens to us all. This is a historical time for all of mankind. We’ve never been at this level of consciousness before. We’re at a pivotal point. With the energies we have now, we must decide what kind of world we want to live in and we must decide now. There is no more time to think about it. There is no turning back either. If you want to create

Spring Energies May Bring Out Your Warrior a world of peace, responsibility and sustainability, I challenge you to stand up now, take out your sword and use it for the highest good of all.

Recently a very dear friend, soul-sister, and mentor of mine passed over to the other side. Her name is Libby Kresky. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of people who knew and loved Libby. She was one of those people who was gracious and kind and well-loved by friends and clients alike. At 88 years of age, she was still working as an astrologer and past life regressionist with an active practice, distributed New Spirit Journal for me on Bainbridge Island, and she attended line-dance classes at her local senior center. In fact, that was what she was doing right before she had the strokes that led to her death. This is how she would want to go and she did. Good for you, Libby. I first met Libby when she called me on the telephone in 1985. I had just started my first newspaper, The New Times. Libby found a copy and called to let me know how much she liked it and to give me encouragement. She knew how difficult it is to start a new venture since she had done it herself more than once. Eventually, she and her dear friend Carol wrote columns on numerology and astrology for the newspaper as well as numerous articles on a variety of topics. Her wisdom seemed to know no bounds. Libby did my astrology chart as she did for most of the people I know. It was not uncommon for her to bring up astrological features when we were having discussions about things that were going on in my life or in the world-at-large. “Remember,” she would say, “You have (this or that feature in your chart)

Libby KreskyAugust 27, 1922 – April 6, 2011

Elizabeth (Libby) Kresky, a woman who was larger than life and meant many things to different people, died at the Messenger House Care Center on April 6, 2011. She was 88. She was the grandmother of Atalie Sloan and Sadie Shaw, and the mother of Dagen Julty, a musician at Shatesbury, Mass., and Rachel Beto of Mt Vernon, Wash. A feminist, a folk singer, and a composer, she played with Pete Seeger and was a member of the Skifflers folk quartet in the 1950s. Under the name Elizabeth Knight, she recorded Folk Songs from Czechoslovakia and Songs of the Suffragettes.

As a linguist, she was a translator for The Current Digest of the Soviet Press in New York. As an educator, she taught Russian at C.W. Post College, New York University, Antioch College and Ohio State University from 1950 to 1970. She was the Director of the Strawberry Hill Alternative School on Bainbridge Island in the early 1970s. She resigned as an educator and became a successful counselor, metaphysician, and astrologer. Below, we wish to honor her memory by offering you a taste of her insights and wisdom in her own words.

On listening to people and meeting them where they are

From the one-room barracks building, Liz, (not her real name) who was about 17 years old, walked into my office. She was

one of my students at the Strawberry Hill Alternative School whom I hadn’t seen for some time. I opened the drawer and pulled out her file. “Liz, you’ve been absent from the school for four weeks. You haven’t done the writing assignments. In fact, you’ve neglected all your studies. You really need these credits to graduate.” I said. As I looked at her file I felt that 17-year-old Liz needed to do a lot of work to catch up. Liz remained silent as she looked out the door. I continued talking to her to make my point. “Liz, you can’t graduate unless you begin focusing on English and Social Studies. And you know you have other ways to earn credits. For example, for physical education

which means this will be a little tougher for you. But don’t worry about it; everything

will turn out fine.”

Something she would say to me frequently was,

“Don’t ever let your work completely define who you are. Always ask yourself, ‘Who am I apart from what I do.’” She loved to say this to me when she found out I was working more hours than she thought I should. It wasn’t always pleasant to be with Libby. She was very straightforward and would tell me what she thought, whether I liked it or not, whether I wanted to hear it or not. Of course, these comments were always followed with her delightful laugh and this softened the blow a little bit. I think anyone who got to know her knew not to ask her opinion unless you were willing to hear what she

really thought. She loved to comment on my

articles and would send me little notes (before the days of e-mail) or call me on

the phone. Once I wrote an article about how we spiritual types have to remember we live

in a material world, that we need to balance our meditations with service to the planet. I wrote

about people I knew who spent a lot of time by themselves in meditation but who wouldn’t dream of volunteering at a food bank or nursing home. I got a phone call that reminded me that not everyone is called to outer service, that we need people who hold the energy through meditation so that the people who are out in the world serving are supported energetically. She then gave the example of herself, saying that she and some of her friends held weekly meditation circles and that they always sent supportive energy to those who were serving in one way or the other. Of course, she was one of the busiest and most service-oriented people I knew while also balancing her inner world and life. What a role model she was to those of us who knew her. Even though she wasn’t part of my everyday life as she was for many others, her ability to impact my life was profound. And open? Oh, yes, Libby would send me e-mails about this or that idea or book she was reading or some new technique she had heard of.

YES WE CAN - THRIVING NEW EARTH

In fact, she had just started attending a class in spiritual healing and was loving it. Libby taught all of us that we never stop learning and that we need to always stay open to new ideas while not tossing out the old ones that work for us. Gardening was one of Libby’s hobbies for years. When we ran an article about communicating with animals, she said she was able to do this. She said she had been able to get rid of all the pests in her garden, except for the slugs. “But, I’m working on it,” she said. “Eventually, I’ll get them to leave, too.” If you mastered that, Libby, send me the information and I will share it with all my gardening friends. A few months ago,

Libby fell while she was in line at her bank. She broke a hip. While she was healing, we had a few conversations by phone. Ever the metaphysician, she was wondering about the underlying reason for the fall. “You know,” she said, “I never knew how many people love me until now. All these people have come to my aid to cover every part of my life. These people really love me.” “Yes, Libby, you are loved by many, many people,” I said. “I think the reason I fell,” she responded, “Was so I could see how many people love me and so I could finally accept that love. And I think I am doing it now. I can accept that I am loved.” Yes, Libby. You are loved and appreciated far beyond

anything I can express in words. And now all of us who love you so much wish you the best in your new adventure. I hope the angels are ready. They are going to have a tough time keeping up with you.

you can earn credits when you walk or bike to school.” Liz still didn’t say anything. She simply left her spiral-bound journal on my desk, walked out of my office and went back home. What she wrote in her journal (along with my interactions with my other students and teachers at the Strawberry Hill High Alternative School on Bainbridge Island) would change my life. The experience eventually would shape the kind of astrology that I practice. When I opened her spiral-bound notebook journal, I read about the challenges that Liz was going through. In short, she was overwhelmed by the responsibilities that her family placed on her. She became the baby-sitter and caretaker of her younger siblings while her mother was alcoholic. And when she learned that her mother was pregnant again, Liz wanted to commit suicide. I noticed the gap between what was important at the moment for Liz and what

I thought she needed. Here was a teenager thinking about taking her life and I was chewing her out on her grades. From then on, I decided to listen to my students and meet them where they were at rather than imposing on them what I thought was required. I would carry this lesson on into my astrology practice as well.

On following your passion

I knew that astrology was what I was most enthusiastic about. It was the next thing I wanted to do. That same Sunday afternoon, I wrote my resignation letter to the school district, drove over to their building, and I pushed it under the door. I thought if I waited until the following day, I would change my mind because I had two children to take care of. When I tendered my resignation, The Bainbridge Review, the local newspaper, wrote an article about me. The headline read “Educator Turned Astrologer.” That article launched my career, but things were not easy at the beginning. I charged $20 per reading when I actually began doing charts.

Continued from Page 3

Libby, In Her Own Words Even though (local astrologer) Elaine Shawley had said I was ready to read charts, I still needed more practice to boost my confidence. I spent quite some time reading charts for friends and family for free... The first few months after I resigned as the director of Strawberry Hill Alternative High were very difficult. One month went by, then two, then three. It turned out that the universe did not send checks. I got three months behind in my monthly mortgage of $296. Behind on my real-estate taxes, and my car was limping along. I had two children to take care. The universe did not come to take care of me. In my search for answers and needing to understand what this was all about, I turned to automatic writing, which I had been experimenting with for quite some time. I said, “Guys, it is not working.” And I received this message, “Libby, you know you always have what you need when you need it. Now get to what is important, experience the richness within, and it will manifest outwardly.” A few weeks later, an envelope was dropped off in my mailbox with an unsigned note: “For Libby and her guides to take off on whatever flights of fancy they wish.” Enclosed were ten $100 bills, enough to pay off my three months’ mortgage and go out to dinner. With this gift from the anonymous donor, I had the confidence that this was what the universe wanted me to do.

On psychic abilities

Elaine Shawley, my astrology teacher, used to take us, her students, to spiritual gatherings. Shortly after I began studying astrology with her, we went to hear a lecture by Jess Stearn on Edgar Cayce. As the award-winning journalist and author of nine bestsellers spoke, I saw the image of a woman figure with a dust cap on her on Mr. Stearn’s left, and that of a tall man on his right. Edgar Cayce’s biographer interrupted his own lecture and told the audience that his mother was on her left and Edgar Cayce was standing by his right, thus corroborating what I was perceiving. This was the first time I actually saw human energy.

On seeing Elaine Shawley at Messenger House:

Several years later, I learned that Elaine was at Messenger House Care Center on Bainbridge Island. I belong to a musical group on the Island called the Evergreen Singers. We went to sing to the seniors at that retirement home. I asked to see Elaine. I was showed a woman in a wheelchair I could not recognize. I greeted her. But she

had no recollection of me. She was gone. I told her, “Thank you for teaching me astrology. You made a huge difference in my life.” Elaine is no longer with us in the body, but what she taught me has helped me have a second career that has sustained me for more than 30 years.

You made me feel I could

A little after my resignation from Strawberry Hill, I was driving into town one day and I saw this young man hitchhiking. He had been a student of mine so I stopped to pick him up. I said, “How are you doing?” He said, “I’m doing great and I’m getting straight As and all the students are coming to me and asking me how to do it and how to study.” And I asked him, “How did you do it?” And he said, “You made me feel I could.” That was my main value at Strawberry Hill. And it is what I help my clients believe about themselves when I do their charts. Some of the students I taught at the alternative school have become respected leaders of the community, lawyers, and teachers, and are holding responsible positions. And yet when I think of Strawberry Hill Alternative High School I am amazed at the transformation and the seeds of wisdom that the experiences there sowed in my consciousness.

Libby said the following morning prayer / affirmations every day, and shared it with one of her clients, who in turn asked us to share it with you:

Morning Prayer/Affirmations

I am the most and best I can be while I am in this form.

Those who will benefit from who I am, what I do and how I do it, now cross my path.

Those from whom I will benefit also cross my path.

I am receptive and responsive.

The divine plan of my life now unfolds in its divine way.

I give thanks that love, peace health, plenty, joy and happiness now reign supreme in me and my world.

It usually derives from a very high level of personal sensitivity, which makes this person more aware of little details than other people, and more bothered if something is “off.” It can be a real challenge to move through life seeing all the little mistakes others have made and missed. So the result often is this person feels a need to make sure the mistakes don’t happen, out of a desire to prevent stress to their own system. This can mean they always seem to be butting in to tell you how to do something, or you get the feeling they never trust you to do anything right. Put two people with nose bumps together in relationship and you can have two controllers driving each other crazy. • Visible nostrils: One way the more superstitious form of Chinese face reading refers to the nose is as “the moneybox.” They say that the nostrils show how easily a person spends money. If you ever look at someone straight on at eye level (not looking up at them or down at them) and you can see directly into their nostrils, this means they spend money easily. Though this may sound a bit farfetched, I do find this tends to be true.

and therefore compatible? Well, first, we all know human beings are not that simple. We each have a gloriously intricate pattern of temperament, beliefs, talents and foibles. But also, it seems a bit silly to assume that a successful relationship can only happen with someone who’s as much like us as possible. So this got me to thinking about what relationships might be like if people shared certain similar features... • Ears that stick out: If you have two people with ears that stick out from the sides of their heads, this means you have two very willful and independent personalities. So here you have two non-conformists, who may share some similar behaviors, values and perceptions about the outside world, but at home together, this could at times turn into a nightmare of each resisting what the other wants them to do. • Arched eyebrows: Brows that look like upside-down V’s indicate that person will be quick to react. They can be spontaneous, which is lovely, but they also may be too impulsive at times. When upset, they’re often emotionally reactive; if you say something to upset them, they can immediately bristle or challenge you. At the extreme, they can

They say opposites attract, but there’s a new dating website that claims to be able to find your true love by matching you with someone who has a face that looks like yours. The theory is that the more you look like someone, the greater the chances of success for your relationship with them. They claim that studies on celebrities’ faces show that the ones who have happy marriages tend to look alike. If you consider this within the context of Chinese face reading, which teaches that every feature on your face has specific meanings and messages, you might think this could make sense. If your date’s features are similar to yours, then wouldn’t it be true that you’d be very similar in personality

So if you have two people in a relationship who both have visible nostrils, there’s a better chance they’ll love to spend and will end up with money problems, certainly not the most optimistic trend if you’re hoping for a successful partnering. • Round face: People with round faces often excel in really enjoying all the pleasures of life here on earth. They love the company of family and friends, wonderful meals together, a cozy and comfy home, and relaxing on a big cushy couch with their feet up. They’re not much inclined toward exercise, and so if you put two of these people together, you’ll find they tend to influence each other, to just cuddle together in front of the TV, snacks in hand, and over time, put on weight. They may actually have a good relationship in certain ways because they can get in the same rut together, but worst case, can develop health problems due to poor diet choices and lack of exercise. It’s definitely important to understand what messages your date’s face reveals, but maybe you should beware if they look too much like you.

Sometimes I look back and think, “How did I write that? The book is smarter than I am!” I have never written strategically, but rather, followed the dictates of my muse. Book ideas are like planes, lined up to approach the runway. Some never leave the gate, but others move quickly to the front of the line. It was like that with The Four Purposes. Honestly, I cannot remember

Dan Millman: The Four Purposes of LifeContinued from Page 1

Nothing will ever be more transformative and life-changing than having your own powerful and direct experience of God. Such an experience changes all your speculation about what is real and what is of value into first-hand knowing. No one else’s theology or opinions will matter anymore because you will know in your very bones what is true. Then you will be a mystic; one who knows God, knows your own inner being, knows about souls and about the heaven world, all from your own experience. This is a blessed state in which all you ever need and the root of all you could ever want is fulfilled from the God-center inside your own being. Some people have deep and real experiences of God without having done hardly any inner work to prepare for it. Most often, such spontaneous revelations occur when a person has a near-death experience or a major life event. If you don’t want to wait and hope for such a blessing to come your way while facing the very good chance that it won’t, you may want to do the preparatory work needed to open the way to such a first-hand experience of God. God cannot be manipulated or forced, but God can be invited and induced to want to come and begin a personal relationship with you. What can you do to induce God to bring you into God’s presence where you can see and know God? The first step is to clear your heart of negation. As Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” How do you become pure in heart? Begin by knowing your own heart. You need

God’s love and the presence of Jesus or Mary not long after you start to open to them. You will need to develop your subtle spiritual senses to feel them, as they only rarely appear to people’s physical eyes. As you open your heart to them, as you clean out of your heart all that is cold, closed, bitter, hard, and dark, you will begin to experience the gentle, clear, and the powerful love of God. You will need help because everyone has blind spots in which they cannot see their own issues and obstacles. Seek out the help you need. Accept the help God sends you. Open in humility and dedication, and you, too, can become pure in heart and see and experience God. It is a promise from one who knows.

Mother Clare Watts is a mystic, ordained priest, master teacher of Christian mysticism, and co-director of a mystical Christian order and school with 15 centers of light in cities across the country. She holds a masters degree in counseling psychology, with extensive post-graduate training in Jungian analysis, is a certified professional midwife, and has enjoyed successful careers in both fields. She is the mother of four grown children and currently lives in Dolores, Colo. where she co-directs the effort to develop the Sophia Peace Center. MotherClare.CentersOfLight.org.

Experiencing God to be willing to feel your feelings and acknowledge what you hold in your heart. You don’t need to begin with a pure heart, or none of us would have a chance, but you do need to be willing to clear out of your heart all the negative emotions you hold there. Though this may sound like an overwhelmingly large task, you will receive an enormous amount of help from the heaven world if you decide to dedicate yourself to this work. For every step you take toward cleansing your heart of all negativity, God, Jesus, Mary, and the angels will all rush toward you to help you out. You simply need willingness and dedication to the task as well as the humility to allow yourself to be helped by others who know the way. God will begin to reveal God’s self to you quite early in your efforts to experience God. You will have many small confirmations that God is seeing, hearing, and helping you. You will begin to feel

the moment I had the idea for the book; perhaps because it emerged like a green shoot emerging from the soil of my sub-conscious. But it seemed important enough to begin the flow of words that eventually shaped themselves into this new book. KN: Which core ideas would you like our readers to grasp? Which daily practices would you suggest they adopt to fully real-ize or embody the four purposes of life? DM: If there is a central theme to what I called “a peaceful warrior’s approach to living,” and to The Four Purposes of Life, it is that there may be innumerable tech-niques or methods one can learn (from the Eastern spiritual cultures and from the Western psychological tradition), but that above and beyond all these technolo-gies waits the school of everyday life. Our practices – our most spiritual practices – are hanging laundry on the line, raising children, building strong relationships, practicing kindness as much as we can, striving for excellence in the workplace, and developing deeper self-knowledge. I wrote The Four Purposes of Life to assist

in these endeavors. KN: Four of your books have been trans-lated into Chinese and you were in Taiwan this February. Where are you going next and when are you coming to the Pacific Northwest? DM: Presenting in Taiwan was a delight, reaching out to yet another part of our world. I’ll be presenting a talk and book signing at Powell’s Books in Portland, Ore., on May 11, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., then I’ll be offering a creative and fun virtual talk and book signing at East-West Books in Seattle on June 1.

Healing a Hurt Heart, Gaining Peace WithinHow we hurt! The pain of economic hopelessness. Stress in relationships. Separation in family. The loss of employment. I use a healing modality that helps a person let go of old beliefs they have about themselves; beliefs that limit their options and their choices for moving forward. These beliefs typically originate in childhood and they plague each of us over and over until we are finally ready to let them go. This process provides another way to view options you may be considering; options about employment, family, and relationships. If you feel separate from those you love, if you feel hurt by others, if you feel stuck in your situation, if you feel unable to make a decision, then this will help you find a deeper, more meaningful way to go forward with personal power. The initial appointment takes 2-3 hours and an introductory rate of $50/hour is offered.

David and I got back from Seattle on Sunday night, and it was a crazy week. From the moment we touched ground in Seattle, cell phones were on and work issues continually demanded our attention. This came in very handy as the chatty woman sitting next to David kept handing him small bottles of vodka to open during the flight. “Grandma likes you,” and “Grandma needs help opening this,” she’d slur, waving the bottle of Smirnoff in his direction. Nothing says, “I’d prefer to be quiet” more than focusing intently on your cell phone. Never mind that it was a game of Angry Birds.

Even though I was raised before the Internet existed, I can’t imagine what business trips would be like without it. Answering office e-mails, adding appointments to my calendar and registering last-minute aura workshop participants are some of the amazing things that I can do right on my cell phone. It’s exciting to be a mobile office, and makes me feel incredibly productive. Cell phones make traveling a joy, as I simply click a button to find great restaurants in the area and never feel like I am lost. After returning on Sunday from an amazing trip, I was pooped and all “talked out.” I promised myself a full Monday of not being logged in to the world. Yet as I groggily poured myself a cup of coffee, my natural reflex was to pick up the laptop, plop down on the couch and check in. Within minutes I was fully absorbed: e-mails to answer, bills to pay, “urgent” news to read and more. Kirstie Alley danced the cha-cha on “Dancing with the Stars”? Tell me more. Even though I told myself that I was going to disconnect and have a day off, there was a part of me that craved my digital connections. After surfing the web for several hours, I didn’t feel rested at all. I had to take a moment and acknowledge that this was all my making. As a self-employed person, no one asks me to count how many hours I spend “researching” on the Internet. If I want to take a day off, it’s my say. But I couldn’t seem to do it, and I know that I’m not the only one. I have friends that I gently make fun of who can’t survive a meal without grabbing their phone every time it beeps or vibrates. In Los Angeles it is very common for someone to answer a call mid-conversation, and carry on right at the table. They usually explain that this call from their agent/publicist/florist is urgent. In that moment I forced myself to disconnect, and the best way to do this was to get out of the house. I quickly threw on some clothes. Bernie our dog can always sense when we are going on a hike: he starts walking in circles and wagging his tail. Dogs are always supportive of your disconnecting from the outside world because it means that they will get to connect with you instead.

I grabbed the keys and Bernie’s leash, and mindlessly slid my iPhone into my pocket. Now, I am using the term hike loosely; I am going on a 45-minute walk in Fryman Canyon. Parts of the hike are sloped, but I am more likely to see Ray Romano than a mountain lion. I won’t get lost. And there really is no reason for me to have my iPhone. Yet, I want it with me. A little shocked that I couldn’t go one hour without being accessible, I pulled the iPhone out of my pocket and left it on the kitchen counter. As we drove to our hike, thoughts swirled in my head. What if my agent called because I got a new book deal? What if the Oprah show called and they needed me on a plane within the hour? It’s her last season people, and she’s on my vision board for a reason. What if my sister Tarrin called because there was a funny story to tell? What-if-what-if-what-if? My body and mind are so used to being accessible at all times that I had anxiety

Connect or Disconnect? There Is Life Beyond The ‘Netover a 60-minute break. As we made our way through Fryman canyon I practiced deep breathing. I looked around and noticed a patch of wildflowers, with their vibrant pinks and yellows. I saw the snow-capped mountains in the distance. David picked a handful of wild sage and handed it to me, which smelled incredibly fragrant. I felt connected, in the right way. I felt happy. I had no phone to check and actually liked not being reachable. As much as I like to think that my life is filled with super-important meetings and tasks that demand my instant attention, I didn’t miss a single urgent call or e-mail on that hike. I did, however, feel happier and more centered. I am making a new daily routine, that for at least one hour a day I will disconnect from technology and connect to myself. I can meditate, cook, take a hike, read, stare at the wall, anything. But for that hour there will be no phone, TV, computer, or texting. Just me and my bliss. So I ask you, when was the last time you disconnected?

these days. Also, when I order flowers to be sent as a gift to someone, if they have cats, I always request no lilies in the bouquet. Flowers and plants can be toxic to other animals as well, like our dog friends. Smaller animals, like rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, and other rodents are even more vulnerable just because of their size and that makes it really important for their owners to be careful about toxins. If you own horses, they too can be poisoned by plants in their environment, so it is good to know what to look out for in their pasture. I always recommend people do some research about toxic plants and flowers before adding an animal friend to the family. If you have houseplants, make sure they are not poisonous to the kind of animal you want. Many common houseplants are toxic to pets so do not assume your plants are safe. It is also possible that you have gotten away with having toxic plants because your present animal friends don’t mess with them. Maybe they are too old to care or, as individuals, they are simply not attracted to plants. Please do not assume this will be the case with new, especially young, animal additions to your household. Prevent and avoid is the best way to go here. It is always better, in my opinion, to be safe rather than sorry, especially when it comes to our animal friends. There is lots of good information on the Internet about flowers and plants. I find the ASPCA website to have the most complete and detailed information. On their site you can find lists of toxic plants as well as photos. I find that very helpful because I don’t always recognize a plant or flower by its name. I found the photographs

One of the things I most look forward to this time of year, when spring really begins to take hold, are all of the beautiful flowers. I love flowers. Pretty much any kind of flowers. I love the incredible range of colors. I love the fact that all of Mother Nature’s colors never seem to clash with each other like man-made colors can. I love, love, love the fragrances. What I don’t love is that some of my most favorite flowers can be deadly to something I love even more: my cats. Many of you may know the flowers of which I speak. For those who don’t, I am talking about lilies and unfortunately, most all kinds of lilies. Even the most beautifully colored and fragrant lilies are toxic to cats. And, when I say toxic, I mean really, really toxic. Most poisons must be ingested to cause a problem but that is not the case with lilies. Lilies are so toxic to cats that they do not even need to swallow any of the plant to be poisoned. All a cat needs to do is chew on a part of the lily, flower, leaves, stems or even just the pollen and that can be all that is needed to cause fatal kidney failure within a very short period of time. Yikes. If your cat friend ever chews on a lily, get them to the vet immediately. Cats that receive emergency treatment within 18 hours of exposure usually survive. Because of that, I do not bring lilies into my house, ever. Some cats will try to chew on any kind of plant that comes into their home. My cats are no exception but since my cats are indoor-only, with free access to their catrun, I have planted some in my yard, far away from the areas I walk my cats

May Flowers: Pretty, But Toxic

on their leashes, however. I do love to have flowers in my house whenever possible. Lilies, of course, are not the only toxic flower or plant to animals, they are just the worst. Since animals are my passion and first love, I have learned that I must pay attention so I am wise about what flowers and/or plants I bring into the house or plant in my garden. When I was selling my previous house recently, I ran into a problem. My real estate agent wanted me to have fresh flowers in several rooms of the house for showing purposes all the time. We went to the Internet and researched toxic flowers. I was delighted to discover a flower that up until then, I was unfamiliar with, alstroemeria. Alstroemeria is a lily-like flower. They look a lot like daylilies but they are not toxic. They come in many colors and can be found year-round at most grocery stores. They are inexpensive and the best thing for me is that they last at least two and usually three weeks. They are pretty much the only flowers that I buy for inside my house

particularly helpful when I was checking out my pastures when I had horses. They have lists and photos for dogs, cats and horses. Here are the web addresses: www.noliliesforcats.com or www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plants. You can also just go to www.aspca.org and in the drop-down Petcare section, click on Poison Control Center. When you are there you can check out the top 10 poisons for animals in 2010. The ASPCA also runs a 24-hour emergency poison control hotline for animals. That phone number is 1-888-426-4435. Write that number down and post it someplace handy like on the refrigerator in case of an emergency. If you or your vet needs emergency information regarding poisoning, this is the number to call. You may need a credit card to pay a $65 consultation fee. Now, all that being said, happy springtime and remember to take time to enjoy and smell the flowers!

Uluru, the big red rock in the center of Australia, is known for its magical healing powers and spiritual ambience. Recently, I undertook some research into the amazing energies of Uluru and spent eight days conducting healing work amongst the indigenous Anangu people. Known as an insular race, I was blessed to learn much about their culture, living wisdom, and deep respect for our planet. I would like to share some of my insights. Depending on your thought or action, positive or negative energy and consequences are created. Every action has a consequence. When you demonstrate respect and appreciation, positive energy and good karma flows to you. For example, respecting the earth and living in a way that reduces waste and toxic load assists everyone on the planet to live a healthier and cleaner life. The care you give to the planet has a

twofold reaction. When there is respect shown to the earth and all living creatures, it creates an abundant environment with nutritious foods and clean air to keep us healthy and happy. Your intention and positive actions to support this flow create a positive energy or vibration around you in the form of gratitude, love, or appreciation. In essence, you are attracting more respect and appreciation to you. This is good karma. On our research trip, we enjoyed many discussions with the Aboriginals about signs and symbolism. I am a great believer that signs are everywhere for us to read. After one of our meetings, we saw an amazing sign. Driving around Uluru, we saw the biggest and most vividly colorful rainbow I had ever seen. We stopped the car to take in the view and embrace the energy of the moment. As we stood looking up to the rainbow, I was aware of many cars hurriedly driving past us. We can choose to be open to signs, or ignore them. The passing traffic missed the most amazing view. For me, rainbows are a positive sign, a precursor to something amazing about to unfold. After the rainbow appeared, I was walking around one of the most sacred parts of Uluru called the Kuniya Walk. As I turned a bend, there was Oprah walking towards me. What are the odds of meeting Oprah,

one-on-one on a dirt trail in central Australia? As my husband and I were alone on the trail and Oprah was walking in front of her 30-person film crew, we got to exchange a few words before being swamped by the media. Oprah had always been on my vision board. It was like our deep respect for the land, the people, and helping them with healing had opened up the heavens to a miracle. It was a great learning experience for me. As well as bumping into Oprah, we were given special permission to visit sacred sites and film in areas like the cultural center. It was there that I learned about the Sorry Book, a compilation of Uluru visitor letters who write about their negative life experience after removing rocks or red soil as souvenirs. The park rangers told us that they receive thousands of rocks, soil and sorry letters every year. I was fascinated by the stories in the sorry book

These stories and the bad luck that follows from disrespecting a sacred place is indicative of life and our planet. Karma does come back to bite people when they don’t treat everything and everyone with respect and kindness. The most productive thing you can do is build up positive energy and create good karma. Do what you can to be kind to the earth. Recycle where you can. Use toxic-free ingredients. Buy organic. Purchase items that are not tested on animals. Choose to make positive choices in your daily life to

pay respect to the earth and its inhabitants. The same principles apply to our relationships with people. I have seen it many times in my healing clinic, where very kind and loving people encounter people who disrespect them or treat them unfairly. The perpetrators ultimately experience the reality of negative karma. When we create loving and respectful relationships, we create positive energetic connections and good karma. We live in a holographic universe where our bodies, our energy and the nature of the earth are all inseparably connected. It makes sense to respect and nurture ourselves and have that be

and the extension of the message I am sharing with you. Each person related the negative consequence or bad karma that ensued after taking rocks and soil from the sacred Uluru region. Most mentioned that they didn’t originally believe in superstition or karma. Their opinions changed radically after they encountered family deaths, car accidents, bad relationships and serious illnesses en masse. Here are some samples... “...I never believed it is true but now after two years I think it is. I made the biggest mistake of my life when I took some of the red sand. Since then a lot of bad things have happened to us... I had

my first miscarriage and then my father got lung cancer and died. I then had a second miscarriage and then an ectopic pregnancy. The doctors had to remove a tube to save me. The father of my closest friend died with cancer and my aunt died. I am still not pregnant...” “I am a Christian and I was not superstitious when I took the red dirt ...since taking the dirt the same year my husband had prostate cancer, a heart attack, and then died with rapid progressive Aphasia. My brother-in-law then died with brain cancer, my daughter-in-law lost her mother and my son-in-law lost his mother. My son is now diagnosed with

a model to extend into our relationships and care for our wondrous planet.

The Science & Art of Transformation

By Krysta Gibson

Beyond Rain of Gold (Hay House) tells the story of how Victor navigated this publishing journey nearly 20 years ago. The book he bought back and then resold for $5,000 is called Rain of Gold and became a national bestseller. It is part of a trilogy Victor wrote that tells the story of his ancestors in Mexico and the United States and it is to become a miniseries on HBO. As the author of over 14 books, Victor’s writing is very much based in his Latino background as well as being laced with his spiritual beliefs and those of his ancestors. He says that he had to hide the spiritual

aspect in his earlier writings but now that he has a publisher that is open to spirituality, he can, in his words, “come out of the closet.” “My other publishers wanted to call my writing fiction. It isn’t. These things happened both to me and to my family,” he said in a recent interview. When he talks about the predicted changes in 2012, he says, “The shift that is coming in 2012 is the energy of what was started in the ’60s. It is coming to fruition. The whole planet is waking up and our consciousness is moving into 26,000 years of the female energy. “The best way for people to prepare for these changes is to close your eyes and

breathe. The best way is to prepare quietly and let go and let go and let go. It is all about breathing, relaxing, and turning over trust.” Beyond Rain of Gold contains more than 150 miracles that happened for Victor, and one is reminded of Carlos Castenada when reading about stones turning into staircases or Victor driving from his home north of San Diego to Los Angeles in a fourth of the normal time.

Would you buy your book back from your publisher?Victor Villaseñor on his bestseller, 2012, and the 13 senses

If you had your non-fiction book accepted by a major publishing house who wanted to call it fiction, would you raise $75,000 to buy it back from them before it was published? This is exactly what Victor Villaseñor did.

In the book, he talks to his deceased father and continues to do so today. “He still comes to me in full form, but not as often as he used to,” explains Victor. “Partly because I need to understand there is no separation so he doesn’t have to come to me but he does.” In his books, Victor talks about the 13 senses rather than the usual five. I asked him about this. “Four senses go to the brain, three go to the heart and six go to the soul. This used to be common knowledge. I got the information from my dad after he passed and he got it from his mother who got it from her aunt

who lived over 168 years. “The four that go to the brain give specific information: sight, hearing, smell, taste. That is what the brain uses to do its thinking. “The heart works with feelings. You feel with your whole body and you feel 26 feet in all directions. We’ve all walked into a room and

balance with your feelings and your surroundings. Then you can trust your intuition. Cops know this. The older cop will tell the younger one, ‘No we’re waiting for backup.’ He gets a feeling in his gut and follows it. “My dad said after he passed, ‘The reason people have so many problems on earth is because they don’t use all of their senses.’ Once we get out of the five senses, all the problems that exist on earth begin to disappear because they were never there. Took me five years to get out of my head and start trusting my feelings on a conscious level. Quit thinking and get into feelings. Then follow your intuition. When you start thinking, then you’re in trouble.” Other senses Victor talks about are music, going into the collective consciousness, time and space, and psychic powers. He says the 13th sense is “supreme being.” “With this, being becomes a verb and you are doing God. Godding becomes a verb; creation didn’t happen. It is happening. All these tools are in the book and in all my writing but in Beyond Rain of Gold they are all there, more openly,” Victor says. His books are not only filled with great wisdom, they are exciting reading and help the reader make a greater connection to the indigenous cultures of our planet.

If you lose your sense of balance, you’re flipping and flopping. You can’t function. “Intuition is the seventh sense and is faster than thinking. You feel, you take a big breath. A shaman is one who acts as an intermediary between the physical and spiritual worlds. A shamanic healer is one who intervenes on the spiritual planes on behalf of the person seeking physical and/or spiritual healing. Although the term “sha-man” itself is Siberian in origin, there are shamanic traditions from every indig-enous culture throughout

the world. Michael Harner, an American anthropologist and founder of the Founda-tion for Shamanic Studies, formulated Core Shamanism to make the fundamental shamanic practices common among indigenous cultures available to Western, indus-trialized society. When most people today use the term “sha-man,” “shamanic healer,”

practices. Please note that in pointing this out I am not advocating for the regulation of the terms “shaman,” “shamanic healer,” and so on. In my opinion, that would be silly. The true test of any healer is the results produced in his or her clients. When seeking out a sha-manic healer, it is worth asking where they received their training and what methods they use. Soul retrieval is one traditional form of shamanic healing. Within the sha-manic worldview there is the idea that one’s soul can fragment and parts can be lost due to traumatic events such as car accidents, serious illness, abuse, etc. When faced with a traumatic event it is common for one’s soul to leave one’s body as a form of self-pro-tection. The problem is, sometimes it doesn’t all come back even when the immediate danger is past. Some signs of soul loss include:• Feeling like a part of yourself is missing.• Depression, especially ongoing depression with no obvious cause• Feeling like you are watching yourself go through life from outside your body• Feeling dispirited, like you have lost your spark• An inability to get past certain issues in your life• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD-like symptoms• Or even just sensing that you would benefit from a soul retrieval During the soul retrieval it is the job of the shamanic healer to journey into non-ordinary reality with the aid of his or her helping spirits to find and retrieve the client’s missing soul parts. Usually this is done with the client present in the room with the healer, although long-distance work is pos-sible and effective as well. In order to journey in non-ordinary reality, a shamanic healer will use a drum beat or other means to enter into

a trance state; it is in this trance state that the finding and retrieval work takes place. Once the soul part, or parts, are gathered, the shamanic healer will blow the soul parts back into the body of the client. Then the healer will relate

What is Shamanic Healing?By Anna Fruchterman

When I tell people I am a shamanic healer I often get quizzical looks. Many people have never heard the term before, and even those familiar with the phrase “shamanic healing” are often confused as to what the work of a shamanic healer actually entails.

or “shamanic practitioner,” they are usually referring to someone trained through a native/indigenous culture or someone trained in Core Shamanism. However, no one “owns” these terms. Today it is not uncommon for intuitive or energy heal-ers to refer to their work as shamanic healing, although it might bear little resem-blance to more traditional

This month of spring blossoms brings to us an awareness of mental health. Our mental health is intricately intertwined with our health and ability to create our lives the way we desire. Feelings, whether or not we stay conscious, drive our thoughts and behavior. Feelings are the fuel which hold the template of our beliefs and frame of reference in place. Armor is the way we hold feelings in the body. Tension and beliefs contribute to a web of consciousness that feeds the environment from which dis-ease takes root. How each of us manifest our consciousness is unique, although there are similar patterns. One individual may express not being enough by overeating, developing diabetes and maybe high blood pressure. Another person may become a workaholic, driven by anxiety, and develop hypertension. There may be another person who develops a serious mental illness. Differences arise through the lessons we need to learn, genetics, our unique constitution, how we reacted to growing up in the family, cultural, economic, and social environment surrounding us and our families in the formative years, plus how each separation in the process of growing up was resolved. There is an intricate integration of mind, body, soul, and consciousness. I think consciousness or wakefulness creates health. Being aware and awake allows us to be present in the moment. Being in the body brings us to the present. An interesting exercise is to notice when you are in an uncomfortable situation, then ask yourself: Am I holding

myself back? Holding my feelings in? Holding myself together? Holding on for dear life? This information plus taking a deep breath brings us to the moment, whereby we can notice what are we feeling. There may be a thought or thoughts driving the holding. This form of exploration may lead to noticing what behavior or action typically follows this holding or thinking process. An intervention can occur anywhere in the process. We may notice muscular holding when receiving body work or getting a massage. During a conversation, you may be triggered by what another person says to you and you hold back your response or blurt out an angry retort. You may walk away or slam the door. The end result may be the same old negative thought that keeps arising. Whenever you become aware of a pattern, bring your exploration all the way to the feeling and need which underlies the feeling thought state. When this step is taken, the feelings can be released and then there is no fuel to hold the thought in place. When there are new options to get your needs met, the pattern is interrupted. Freeing your feelings and letting go creates space for spontaneity, creativity, new thought, and ultimately new consciousness. As each of us embarks on this process it is helpful to have a psychotherapist or counselor to provide feedback and an objective mirror. During this month of mental health awareness, I would like to take a moment to focus on mental illness. A diagnosable mental illness affects one in four Americans. Mental illness spans a continuum whereby the person’s ability to think, feel, relate, function and cope in the world is disrupted. Among those individuals with serious mental illness, the disease may result in unemployment, inappropriate incarceration, substance abuse, homelessness, and suicide. We as a society fail miserably to provide a consistent continuum of care to support individuals with serious mental illness in attaining their

highest level of functioning. I have been fortunate in my life to have had the experience of working with the seriously mentally ill for 18 years. The individuals with whom I worked taught me how to be authentic in doing therapy and to create a community system which met their needs. Today, there are some programs which provide structure, support, work, family involvement, and a developmental program which enables individuals with serious mental illness to learn how to function in the world. An intricate aspect of such a program is the lowest effective dose of medication, community environment, structure, and relationship in supporting an individual in moving from the hospital to a residential program. Once the individual has learned to function in a residential setting, then support and structure to move into independent living, and (when appropriate) to living on his/her own. There seem to be four pillars essential in working with the seriously mentally ill including relationship, hope, family, and community. I think all healing happens in relationship. When there is hope, miracles appear. When the family is involved change and healing can affect the entire system. Community provides the space, culture, support and structure that allow the individual to see how s/he affects others. The feeling that we are all in this together provides a connection, support, understanding, and a mirror that reflects both strengths and challenges. At an even deeper level, there is a spirit within and a desire to live or a remembering of who we are that often accompanies progress, recovery and health. I am blessed to have shared in many miracles, recoveries spurned by faith and hope. Just as the swollen rivers roar over the rocks, let us be empowered by the sheer force of energy within as we discover our momentum and drop into the harmony of self. The spring rivers find their way around the obstacles; so too can we. I’ve been meditating for more than 40 years. Every meditator inevitably has certain experiences along the way that guide his or her practice. We learn to emphasize certain elements that enhance our experience of awareness and organize our practice in an efficient and inclusive sequence. Thus, we can achieve the desired results in the quickest time. Busy as most of us are, this is what constitutes the “perfect” meditation technique for me: nothing overlooked, nothing wasted. The most important component in my meditation technique is posture. Sitting on the floor is the best way to attain the perfectly straight back that supports mindfulness; undistracted attention to the mind. Because many, if not most, people find sitting on the floor difficult, hatha yoga was developed, and some form of stretching is, therefore, the second most important component of my meditation technique. With consistent relaxation exercise and a zafu (meditation cushion) that keeps the hips higher than the knees, I can sit on the floor for at least an hour a day with very little discomfort. I had polio as a child and never thought I would be able to do this. “Practice makes perfect.” This last statement brings up a third component, time. Timing is very important. We should practice meditation every day. There are also ideal times of day for meditation. Because we are primarily exercising mind, practicing when the air element is predominant is ideal, and that is in the roughly four hours preceding dawn and dusk. If these times are not convenient, whenever is convenient is the best time, and it should be consistent, the same time every day. Furthermore, the duration of one’s practice must also be manageable within your daily schedule being of sufficient duration to produce the desired results. Where you sit is also very important. Being creatures of habit, it is best to establish a place in your home that is reserved just for meditation. You could decorate it with objects that support your desire to practice. Then, whenever you see it, you feel the urge to meditate, and that is what you want to do. This brings up attitude. Cultivating the attitudes of gratitude and receptivity is essential. Giving thanks to your teacher for the technique and being open to the guidance and insight brings joy to your experience. Dedicating the merit generated from the practice to the benefit of all beings is the ideal way to conclude one’s meditation. Another component of hatha yoga practice is the opening up of the body’s energy channels and the attunement of the mind to the breath. The pace of the relaxation exercises should follow the rhythm of one’s breath. It should not be hurried. One should cultivate the awareness that the yoga asanas

(postures) are an integral part of the meditation technique. The sitting portion of the technique should not be done without them and should always be preceded by the asanas. Prana or chi (vital energy) should flow freely through the body-mind to open up higher states of awareness to the meditator. There are a couple of actions that are very helpful in facilitating this flow of

The “Perfect” Meditation Techniquechi or prana: sound and breath. In virtually every creation story the world over, the creation was spoken into manifestation. “In the beginning was the Word...” And so, my perfect meditation technique incorporates sound to attune oneself to the source of all life. I announce my intention to awaken the subtle energy centers and they awaken. I add some pranayamic breathing to raise my overall energy level and awaken the subtle, energetic body to the revelation of new experience. Finally, in my perfect meditation technique I

consciously work with the chakras (subtle energy centers) and the energy pathways that connect them. This is the energy called kundalini, and it must be handled with care and awareness. So, I begin this portion by focusing on the light in and around the body. This sacred luminosity acts as a protective shield to promote safe and sane awakening of the kundalini energy. Fortunately, this technique is taught throughout the world. It was brought forth and made available by the “Hugging Saint,” Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (“Amma”). Called Integrated Amrita Meditation (IAM), it incorporates all these elements into a 30-minute

daily practice. You can learn more about it at www.integratedmeditation.org/.

Amma’s 25th anniversary U.S. tour begins in Seattle. Meet Amma at a free public program at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue on May 27 and May 30 or attend a retreat from May 28-May 30. For more info visit www.seattlesatsang.amma.org/2011_AmmaVisit.html

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Barefoot RunningBy Dr. Craig Richards and Thomas HollowellAlpha Book by Penguin, 2011Reviewed by Ariele Huff “Set your feet free, and your mind will follow.” (Society for Barefoot Living) This is close to the philosophy underlying the book, but most of it concentrates on well-organized information from two barefoot runners who have amassed some impressive facts, historical examples, and hands-on (feet-first?) advice for novice to practiced runners who want to experiment with or embrace shoeless running. Or running with minimalist shoes. Or barefoot walking. Richards and Hollowell do an excellent job of keeping the conversational tone light and amusing while answering questions and providing crucial facts about who should and shouldn’t, how to do it safely, and why barefoot running is a rapidly growing trend among the health-conscious. The spirituality of being in touch with the earth beneath our feet is coupled with measurable physical, emotional, and mental benefits. The authors are extremely careful to help readers stay safe in exploring, developing, and/or perfecting this form of running. They

include a clear physiological description of running, examples of successful barefoot runners, a rating of minimalist shoe options, warm-ups and stretches, perceived barriers, and a complete training plan. Interested? Get the book before you slip those shoes off.

How to Improve Your LifeThe Successful Way to Improve Your Health, Relationships, Career, Personal Finances, and YourselfBy Raymond H. ScudderMill City PressReviewed by Ariele Huff Based on “six simple steps you can follow to achieve improvement in any area of your life,” Ray Scudder simplifies success with the reassuring touch of someone who has realized the results of his method. The clear focus on using a straightforward process repeatedly makes the promise that progress can become as automatic as any other learned behavior. Beyond that, Scudder reveals the “internal power” that can be tapped by the process and all within a 21- to 30-day span. The book is methodically organized, gently guiding the reader to see the obvious connections between already known wisdoms. It’s a bit

like watching someone build a birdhouse and then knowing how to build them from then on. Presenting not only an uncluttered program, How to Improve Your Life, also effuses a loving attitude toward the reader. It seems to prove the point that a life coach should care about those who learn from him. For more information or to order the book: www.HowtoImproveYourLife.net or amazon.com.

The Guru QuestionThe Perils and Rewards of Choosing a Spiritual TeacherBy Mariana Caplan, Ph.D.Sounds True When we embark on our spiritual quest, most of us read books, go to classes, get some sort of readings and maybe attend a church or spiritual group. There comes a point, however, when one yearns for a spiritual teacher or teaching to whom one can commit. The path to finding our teacher(s) or guru can be fraught with challenges. Not everyone who claims to have answers really does and not everyone who claims to have our best interests at heart really does. It is not uncommon for people to fall into the trap of giving their all to a teacher who turns around and abuses or misleads them. This book can come to the rescue, maybe before the student walks down that path. Mariana Caplan has spent over 20 years studying many different mystical traditions. In this book, she openly shares her journey with us, foibles and all, in order to help her readers find our way more easily. This book is a wonderful companion for those new or long to their spiritual path, no matter what tradition the person might be following. It is also a great guide to those who call themselves teachers as it will assist in learning what this role is and is not.

Your Magical SoulHow Science and Psychic Phenomena Paint a New Picture of the Self and RealityBy Jeffrey A. Marks This is not a book you will want to read at one sitting. Your Magical Soul is complex and the author touches many different topics, all of them deep and of great interest to seekers. Jeffrey Marks has been a working psychic for many years and a student of metaphysics since the age of 15 when some other-world beings appeared to him. The first part of the book gives us the author’s background so we can understand him and his viewpoint before jumping into the second half of the book where the meat is. Here he shares with us the nature of the soul, our inner voice, the basics and advanced issues around manifesting, issues with time, the body-mind-soul connection, death, and religion. Did I mention you don’t sit down and read this book? These are heavy topics and they are not dealt with lightly in this book. If you’re looking for something that will give you a lot of information that is philosophical as well as practical and that is based on someone’s actual experience and studies, you will enjoy this book. You will most likely find yourself reading it more than once.

a more Christian viewpoint.

Meditations with Teresa of AvilaA Journey into the SacredBy Megan DonNew World Library

St. Teresa of Avila was known for her contemplative life and her ability to live a practical life. She authored several texts and there have been biographies written about her. This book contains meditations based on the “seven dwellings” as described in her works. Megan Don has studied and taught the works of St. Teresa for years and travels frequently to the Carmelite Monastery in Spain where Teresa lived and taught. This book gives passages from St. Teresa’s writings followed by an explanation that helps to ground them in today’s world. You don’t have to follow the Christian path to use and enjoy this book. It is very inspirational and the ideas can be applied to life in today’s busy and challenging world.

COUNSELING & OTHER SERVICES

any significant images or insights gained on behalf of the client that were received in non-ordinary reality. In al-most all cases soul retrieval leads to healthy changes in the client’s life. Most people, after a soul retrieval, will go through a process of integra-tion where they get used to the feeling of having their returned soul parts back in their body and actively contributing to their energy field.

People sometimes ask if it is possible to do a soul retrieval for oneself. The answer is usually no, but it depends. It is always pos-sible to ask your own spiri-tual allies to help return soul parts to you. I remember one instance where I was a passenger in a car driving to the top of Mt. Constitu-tion on Orcas Island. I had an experience where I remembered instance after instance of pain from my past, situations that had been very difficult to forgive

and let go. But there on that sacred mountain, in that state of joy, I was able to see those situations as separate from me and forgive ev-eryone involved easily and without reservation. As I did so I felt soul parts returning. If you wish to try some-thing similar yourself, I rec-ommend finding a place that feels safe, and preferably a place where you feel con-nected to spirit. Having an already established spiritual practice and relationship with your personal spiritual

allies helps. Talk to your spirit helpers – these could be your guides, angels, power animals – anyone who looks out for you from the spiritual realms. Reach out to them with your voice, your emotion, your thought. Let them know that you want any missing soul parts to return. If there is a specific situation in mind that you are seeking healing around, voice this as well, in specific detail. Then be quiet. Listen. Be ready to re-ceive and absorb what your spirit helpers bring you. You may feel an emotional shift. You may have a physical sensation. You may receive

insight or understanding. Or you may not feel or sense anything at all. This is okay, too. You can try again anoth-er time, or spirit may choose to answer your request in a different way. Look for syn-chronicities and guidance that might lead to a solution you had not thought of. Soul retrieval is just one form of shamanic healing. If you are interested in finding a shamanic practitioner, it is important to find someone you trust and feel comfort-able with. If possible, ask friends or acquaintances for recommendations, or seek out a healer you feel drawn to. Talk to him or her before

setting up an appointment. Ask about their training and the methods they use. When you find someone you reso-nate with, then go ahead, your soul seeks healing. Anna Fruchterman is a shamanic healer working in Seattle. Trained in Core Shamanism, Anna offers soul retrieval, power ani-mal retrieval and energy work to support clients in healing and navigating life transitions. She can be reached by phone at (206) 491-3555. Her website is www.dragonmedicinehealing.com.

The Enlightened Puzzler by Mark Blair

Answers on Page 6

By Cathleen L. Balfour

Since the beginning of time, people have described mysterious places around the world as being “sacred,” having an “intense energy,” or having “presence of spirit.” Ancient legends from indigenous cultures tell of amazing, even miraculous, events: divine beings appear, mystics see visions, and others attain zspiritual enlightenment. Nearly every civilization in human history has sought to honor the divine, the mysterious, or the supernatural in some way. Most often, this happens at sacred sites: special places where the physical world calls forth the spiritual world. A few years ago, I received a channeling that said: “Part of your divine purpose is to guide others to sacred places of ancient civilizations.” I was shown that each of these unique experiences would attract those who were ready to reconnect and identify with the energy and wisdom contained at these sites. A sacred site’s mysterious spiritual magnetism calls us to embark on deep exploration of self, for each contains knowledge of vital importance to the well-

being of humanity and earth herself. They allow us to be a part of the story of ancient times and to journey through mythic realms of the indigenous peoples. By learning from the different mythologies and legends we, through divine awareness, can understand not only our individual selves but also how ancient cultures have influenced our current realities. Each sacred site — like the pyramids of Egypt, México and South America; Stonehenge, Sedona, parts of the Hawaiian Islands, and many more (visit www.sacredsites.com for more information) — has its own unique energy field, and each of us responds in some way to this energy: some simply notice a subtle vibration, while others see, feel, or sense the esoteric wisdom and transformational energies held by the site. Connecting to these energies of the sacred site and intentionally attuning ourselves to the higher frequencies of each site will help us transcend on our spiritual path of ascension. These energies resonate within us, awaken and realign our meridians, and energetically clear our subtle energy bodies. This, in turn, enhances our creativity, renews our passions, helps us gain clarity about our life’s higher purpose, and accelerates the natural flow of harmony in the world. The resulting spiritual growth can transform one’s life. As a guide, my intention is to help participants transform through sacred alchemy, or the act of bringing spiritual perfection into contact with the material plane. By tuning in to the energies held at these sites, we can bring forth amazing personal transformation through loving

intent, which has the potential to heal the sites, our lives and the lives of others, past, present and future. We can tap into – and affect – space, time, and form through love and respect. I am honored to watch as each participant embraces life changes through sacred moments of introspection and reconnects with the ancient energies of these sanctified places. In Cancun, I led a group through the Mayan ruins and to the top of Coba pyramid to be inspired by the wisdom, knowledge, and compassion that the pyramid awakened. Through guided meditations, the group members recalled Mayan past lives. Two participants, one masculine and one feminine, were called back to understand a life in which they held great spiritual power and also great physical power over others. It helped them understand that the purpose of their current lives was not random but a step along each’s evolutionary paths. Another participant finally understood her lifelong fear of heights when she remembered the life in which she was sacrificed by being thrown from the top of the pyramid. This experience helped her to understand and clear the fear and reclaim her power. I’ve led similar transformative experiences among the red rocks of Sedona and within the “motherland” Lemurian energies of

Maui. Through meditations and ceremonies, each participant reconnected to his or her true self and experienced wondrous adventures and personal growth. While physical travel provides a unique benefit, it’s not necessary in order obtain the benefits of a sacred site, or to benefit the site. It is possible, through a state of unconditional love and intention, to travel through visualization or prayer to a specific sacred site. This can be accomplished through meditation, quiet contemplation, pictures, music, and even dreamtime. Simply intend to connect with the wisdom/energy of a particular sacred location and receive inspiration and guidance as to why you were guided to visit that site. Remember, your thoughts expressed will carry the message of your intentions with them, and you are able to send healing, peace and love to all. In doing this, you can support Mother Earth and all those

who reside upon her, for all aspects of creation want to be loved, remembered, and understood.
