TEACHING/LEARNING PROCEDURES:

Concepts are introduced through various total-group activities and teacher direction. The children apply, practice and extend the concepts through small-group and individual activities. Although there are no actual units, there is an oral evaluation done to assess the child’s learning after anywhere between 5-12 lessons. Concepts are reviewed daily. Many activities are integrated into the curriculum throughout the year: calendar, counting, number line, days of school, and weather graphing.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Revised 2/1/2015

We test all of the students in 5th – 8th grade at the beginning of each year to evaluate their math skills. We give them the end of the year test of the grade they are currently in. If they score 75% or above on the test, we move them up to the next grade’s math. Once they get to eighth grade, if they test out of eighth grade math, they are put in Algebra 1 which is a high school level course.

BASIC TEACHING/LEARNING MATERIALS:

Houghton Mifflin Math , 2007 Level 2 Student textbooks with manipulatives and teacher resource material. Math manipulatives including: calculators, pattern blocks, dollar bills and coins, rulers, clocks,

flashcards, geo-boards, tangrams, counters, etc. Online flashcards and math websites including Adapted Mind Math and Ten Marks Mad Minutes

TEACHING/LEARNING PROCEDURES:

Each lesson begins with the class going through flashcards together. Mad Minutes are administered on Mondays with a goal set for each quarter. Most days, manipulatives are used with some introductory and example problems. After the warm-up activities and introduction of the concepts, there is a time for individual work. Several problems are done and are checked with the students individually. This provides instant feedback on a particular skill.

Other days are set aside for alternate approaches to teaching difficult concepts or to provide extension activities. Other techniques used for teaching and learning are small group projects or problems, connections to other disciplines such as science and language arts, and applications to real life situations. Many math games or learning tools are provided for students who complete their work.
