It’s almost August, 2017. It does seem that the summer has flown by, doesn’t it? Soon we’ll be back to the rhythm of the regular program year, school will start for our younger folk, temperatures will go down and the days will noticeably shorten into winter. In the midst of all this a debate continues in this place over the friendly factor. What is the friendly factor you say. I hear it as whether St. Paul Church is a friendly congregation or not. Friendliness is about the welcome that we ex-tend to those who are not already a part of this faith community. What do you think? How are we doing when it comes to being a welcoming congre-gation? A couple of people approached me about trying to enhance our welcome factor. You may notice there are colorful little shopping bags in the narthex. If you take a look in them you will find a booklet called A Taste of St. Paul, a church brochure which highlights some of our ministries, a monthly news-letter and maybe even a small bag of homemade cookies! Those are our guest bags. They will be given to our worship guests. Its a way for us to say, “We’re glad you chose to come worship with us today.” We are working to enhance our web presence with an improved website and a Facebook page. Special thanks to Mark Stibbe and Michelle Carlson for their work on these aspects of our ministry. Have you taken a look lately. We are about making all things new. Another way to enhance our welcome factor is to identify what we mean when we say All Are Welcome. People tell me that is the case at St. Paul. I’ve experienced it but how do we get that known in the community. Some have put All Are Welcome on their websites or signs outside their en-trances but in these days too many people have not experienced a wel-come at God’s house so they are shy about entering our doors. Even in our ELCA, too often, the people of God do not feel welcome in the house of God. There is a reason that we remain the 2nd most homogeneous church body in the nation - we are friendly but only to our friends. Even ELCA pastors speak of their disappointment in discovering a lack of welcome as they seek a church home after retirement. Imagine what it must be like for those who have not been a member of this club. We hear of people in the LGBTQI community who look for a visible sign that they will be welcome in a church. For our denomination it is the Reconciling Works emblem: But what about for other persons: those of different marital status, those of

different skin colors or ethnicities, those who have disabilities? How do they know they will find a welcome behind our doors? It has been sug-gested that we be specific about who is welcome - listing all the people that are welcome in our place. A friends church uses this: All Are Wel-come. We are a place of welcome to all God’s children regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, ethnicity, mari-tal status, physical or mental ability, political stand or theological perspec-tive. Yes, we mean everyone is welcome here!” It may sound a bit awk-ward but it gets results. Another church has a similar statement to the aforementioned one in their bulletin and on their website but takes it a step further by announcing be-fore every worship service an extensive welcome statement. “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are wel-come here. If you are young or old, you are welcome. If you have brown skin, black skin, white skin or any color skin, you are welcome. If you are married or single, you are welcome. If you are gay or straight, you are welcome If you are transgendered, you are welcome If you are a man or a woman, you are welcome If you cannot see or hear, you are welcome If you are sick or well, you are welcome If you are rich or poor, powerful or weak, you are welcome If you are Republican or Democrat or Independent or any other political party or no party, you are welcome If you believe in God some of the time or none of the time or all of the time, you are welcome. You are welcome here because we believe God has brought you here today. Come with your gifts, your pain, your hope, your fears Come with your traditions that have helped you and hurt you Come and listen for the Sacred Spirit that calls you to love your neighbor wholeheartedly, seek justice, create peace and practice compassion. You are welcome here.” Let’s look at what we need to do at St Paul to make sure people know we

mean it when we say All Are Wel-come. I’m looking for your ideas as to how we proceed. Blessings as we prepare for the future God has planned for us.

St. Paul LC is one of 140+ congregations located in the South Central Wisconsin Synod of the ELCA. A synod is the geographical region. Ours is located in, as its name implies, the south-central part of the state of Wisconsin.

Our synod’s mission is: We care for, connect and equip our congre-gations to be the heart and hands of Jesus. The Synod lives that out by:

Welcoming - We are a church that belongs to Christ. There is a place for you here. We believe God calls each of us by name. Christ’s church is not ours to control, nor is it our job to sort, divide, categorize or exclude. Whenever we feel compelled to “draw the line” in our lives, we must acknowledge as Lutherans that Jesus always stands on both sides of that line. We are a Reconciled in Christ Synod.

Inviting – We are a church that believes Jesus is God’s “YES” to us. Our lives can be a “YES” to others. The “Yes” of Jesus Christ compels and empowers us to be open and accessible within any community, within any context.

Engaging – We are a church whose unity is in Jesus Christ, who gathers us around word and water, wine and bread. Because we are grounded in God’s love and forgiveness, we are equipped to live and serve here and now, in the world, will all its complexities, tensions and ambigui-ties. We have the courage to explore the world as saints and sinners, knowing we will never take God somewhere God has not already been.

Coming Together – We are a church that believes God is calling us into the world –together. We don’t have to do it alone, and we don’t have to do everything. Each of us has a unique story, and we are part of a larger story that makes up the ELCA. We work through our local congrega-tions, synods and partners and the churchwide organization. Together, we achieve things on a scale and scope that we could never do otherwise.

Being Active – We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. We do God’s work in the world – restoring and reconciling com-munities. We pursue justice and seek peace no matter how long the jour-ney or wide the chasm.

Connecting – We are a church that is a catalyst, convener and bridge builder. Our faith calls us to see the world as interdependent/ The ELCA has become a force for connection, working across denominations, faiths, organizations and sectors, locally and globally. We’re a welcome partner because we respect the perspectives and strengths of others and share a common vision to uphold human dignity.

Being Thoughtful – We are a church that is energized by lively en-gagement in our faith and life. “Our faith is a living, busy, active, mighty, thing.” said Martin Luther. We continually strive for a deeper understanding of what the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ means for the world. Doing so puts us right where God wants us to be: in the thick of life.
