Learning Objectives:Identify the patient safety process as a continuum•for the perinatal patientDiscuss postpartum complications over a time frame•that culminates at the six-week follow-up appointmentDiscuss innovative patient education models that are•impacting maternal health outcomesExplain the role of perinatal physiology in the•development of postpartum complicationsEvaluate the effectiveness of the patient education•encounterReview the latest evidence that supports innovation•and evaluation in perinatal care

Every year in the United States, almost 1,000women die of pregnancy-related complications, while severe maternal morbidity affects approximately 52,000 women each year, according to studies reported in Obstetricsand Gynecology and by the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention.

• Between 1998 and 2009, severe complications duringdelivery increased by 75 percent and during postpartumhospitalizations by 114 percent.

• Overall mortality during postpartum hospitalizationsincreased 66 percent.

• The U.S. mortality ratio is higher than in most devel-oping countries, according to a study in the AmericanJournal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG).

Based on current trends, the numbers of severe maternal complications and mortality are expected to increase, the CDC says.

But there is reason for hope. The AJOG study revealedthat between 40 percent and 50 percent of maternaldeaths and 30 percent to 40 percent of “near miss”/severe complications are preventable through changesin provider/patient/systems factors.

In this in-depth conference intended for physicians, nursesand other health care professionals involved in the careof women, learn how you can be a part of reducingthese devastating statistics using evidence-based standards of patient-centered care that support maternalsafety and promote prevention of perinatal morbidityand mortality.
