1.DesiredStudentProfile

Asascholarlydiscipline,scienceexplorestheprinciplesandlawsthatgovernnaturalphenomena.Throughitsendeavors,thisintellectualenterprisehascontributedtoprofoundculturaladvancesasanintellectualassetaswellastoimprovedlivingstandardsandwelfareforallofhumankind.Fromtheearliestdaysofitsestablishment,theGraduateSchoolofSciencehasoperatedwithinanatmosphere of academic freedom and continued to build on its extensive record of originalresearch achievement in fields ranging frommathematics, physics, and astrophysics to Earthplanetary science, chemistry, and the life sciences.While doing so, it has also producedmanyexcellentresearchersforvaluablerolesontheinternationalstage.TheSchoolhastheacademicmissionofenablingeachandeveryenrolledgraduatestudenttogainadeeperunderstandingofthefundamentalsystemsofthenaturalsciencesand,withthatfoundation,developtheirabilitytoengageinoriginalresearch,createnewintellectualvaluethroughpooledknowledge,andexcelinindependentcareerrolesasresearchersorresponsibleprofessionals.Inlightofthismission,wewelcome students that demonstrate an excellent grasp of science fundamentals and thewillingnesstopersevere intheirresearchactivities.Additionally, forourmaster'sanddoctoralprograms,welookforwardtotheenrollmentofstudentswiththefollowingprofile. 4.EligibilityRequirements

Foreign (non‐Japanese) nationals with resident status "Student" in Japan, including thoseexpectedtobegrantedtheresidentstatusbythetimeofenrollment,whomeet(orareexpectedtomeetbythedaybeforeenrollment,i.e.31March2017forAprilenrollment,30September2017forOctober2017enrollment)eitherofthefollowingrequirementsareeligibletoapply.(1) ThosewhocompletedanundergraduateprogramataJapanesehighereducationinstitution;

(2) Thosegrantedabachelor'sdegreepursuanttoArticle104.4oftheSchoolEducationAct;

(3) Thosewhocompletedatotalof16yearsofschooleducationoutsideJapan;

(4) Thosewhocompletedatotalof16yearsofeducationprovidedbyanoverseas institutionthroughdistancelearningwhileresidinginJapan;

(5) ThosewhocompletedanundergraduateprograminJapan(limitedtothosewhosegraduatesaredeemedtohavecompleted16yearsofeducation)thatis:A)offeredbyaforeignhighereducation institutionaccredited intheforeigncountry;andB)designatedbytheJapaneseMinisterofEducation,Culture,Sports,ScienceandTechnology(the"Minister");

(6) Those who completed a professional program at a vocational school designated by theMinisteronorafterthedatespecifiedbytheMinister;

(7) ThosedesignatedbytheMinister;

(8) Thosewho:A)receivednotlessthanthreeyearsofhighereducation(includingthosedeemedequivalentbytheMinisterpursuanttoArticle102.2oftheSchoolEducationAct);andB)areacknowledgedbytheGraduateSchoolofScience("GSS")thattheyhaveearnedprescribedcreditswithexcellentgrades;or

(9) Thosewhoare:A)deemedbyGSSatleastasacademicallyqualifiedasthosewhocompletedanundergraduateprogram;andB)aged22yearsorolder.

‐ InterviewswillbeconductedinJapaneseOREnglish.PriortoapplicationpleasecontactaDivisionfacultymemberyouwishtohaveasyouracademicsupervisor.Admissionsdecisionswillbemadebasedonaholisticviewof thewrittenexamresults,oralexamperformance,andcharacteristicsoftheresearchfield.



Intheoralexam,applicants'aptitudeforandknowledgeinthefield,communicationskillsrequired to effectively engage in research, and eagerness for pursuing research will beassessed.

Thosewhounderperformontheoralexammaynotbegrantedadmissionregardlessofthewrittenexamresults.

For special admissions under the aforementioned eligibility requirement (8), applicants'futurepotentialwillalsobefactoredinbesidestheexamresults.

7.ExaminationFees

Note: If applying from overseas, contact GSS student affairs office for your examination feepayment and skip the instruction in this section which is for applicants submitting his/herapplicationdirectlytotheGSSstudentaffairsofficeorbyadomesticmailservice. JPY30,000tobepaidbetween16and20January2017|Bankstampsdated20January2017willbeaccepted.PaymentmadeoutsidetheperiodwillNOTbeaccepted.(1) Entertheapplicant'sname(threetimesintotal)inthepayersectionoftheMoneyTransfer

RequestFormdesignatedbyKyotoUniversity("KU").PayexaminationfeesoverthecounterataJapanesebank(otherthanJapanPostBankandpostoffices)usingtheform.PaymentmadeonlineorviaATMswillNOTbeaccepted.

(2) BanktransferfeeswillnotbechargedifthepaymentismadeattheSumitomoMitsuiBankingCorporationheadofficeorbranches.Ifmadeatotherbanks,applicantswillbechargedforthetransferfees.

(5) InternationalstudentsexpectedtoreceivetheJapaneseGovernment(MEXT)Scholarshipareexemptfrompayingexamfees.MEXTScholarshipstudentsfromoutsideGSS,however,mustsubmitaMEXTScholarshipstudentcertificate.

(6) Thosewhoseprimarywageearnerswereaffectedbythe2011GreatEastJapanEarthquakeand/orthe2016KumamotoEarthquakeatareasapplicabletotheDisasterReliefActmaybeexemptfrompayingexamfeesifevidencedbyofficialdocumentation.FordetailscontacttheGSSstudentaffairsofficeby4January2017.

(2) Form for Affixing Money Transfer Certificate for Examination Fees for domestictransfer:PayexamfeesataJapanesebankusingtheMoneyTransferRequestFormattachedto these Guidelines, and affix the receipt stamped by the bank to the Money TransferCertificateforExaminationFees. (3) Academictranscriptandcertificateof(expected)graduation issuedbytheuniversityattended:1)KUFacultyofSciencealumniandstudentsaretocompleteandsubmitaKU‐issued Academic transcript and certificate of (expected) graduation. 2) Those withtransferred credits must also submit an academic transcript obtained from the highereducation institution that granted the credits. 3) Those who have satisfied the aboverequirement(8)mustsubmitacertificateofenrollmentinsteadofacertificateofgraduation.

(4) Residencecertificate(orcertificateofitemsstatedinresidencecertificate)thatstatesthe applicant's resident status and period of stay in Japan: A double‐sided photocopy(enlargedtoA4size)oftheapplicant'sresidentcardisalsoacceptable.Ifnoneoftheaboveis available at the time of application, submit a photocopy of the ID photo page of theapplicant'spassportinstead.
