State Director’s Message It's Time For the Four R's!

As we wind down the 2013-2014 sorority year, are you

ready for the Four R's? During this summer transition

period, collectively and individually, we should take

time to Reflect, Review, Renew and Re-engage. The

summer allows for us to spend time with our family

and friends, enjoy our favorite past times, slow down

the hectic pace of our lives and obtain the much needed

rest required to progress further then where we left off. We can analyze our

progress as individual members, chapters and auxiliaries in order to evaluate

our effectiveness and our alignment to fulfill the principles and ideals of Zeta.

We have the opportunity to become still and quiet in order to meditate on our

purpose, destiny and call in life and to this illustrious sisterhood by reenergiz-

ing our bodies, souls and spirits. And we purposefully set aside time to meet

while determining our strategy, focus and vision for doing the work of Zeta for

another sorority year.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you in this capacity for the last two years.

It has been a pure pleasure, honor and humbling experience that has changed

the very course of my life. I am eternally grateful to be blessed to serve at this

magnitude. We have accomplished a lot during this time, especially this so-

rority year. We conducted our first state-wide leadership retreat that focused

on all elected chapter-level positions and other aspects of chapter manage-

ment. We had an amazing State Conference on the Eastern Shore where we

Adopted Our State School, Choptank Elementary and provided them over

1,000 books in 13 classroom leveled-libraries which has a cost value of over

$10,000. Organized our first Maryland State (MDS) March for Babies Team

and raised over $1,000 dollars towards this effort. For the fourth consecutive

year, we provided two rising seniors college scholarships totaling $4,000.

Chapters and auxiliaries celebrated milestone anniversaries, conducted nu-

merous chapter events, impacted their communities with meaningful service

projects, raised funds for note-worthy causes and awarded scholarships to

deserving learners.

Blue Jeans for Babies

As a new fundraising effort, State Director Green implemented Blue Jeans for Babies at the 2014 Maryland State Leadership Conference. The fundraising campaign encouraged sorors to donate $5 to wear Blue Jeans to Friday evening’s Executive Board meeting with the proceeds to benefit the March for Babies. The support from sorors was astound-ing as the state raised over $800. Thank you to each and every soror for their support and dedication to serve.

It’s Time for the Four R’s! ( cont’d from pg. 1)

As we make our way to the Chocolate City for Boule' 2014, I want to celebrate and acknowledge all of those who are transitioning from chapter, auxiliary and State elected/appointed officer positions and welcome our newly elected/appointed officers to their terms of service. Thank you for your commitment to our sorority and your engagement with her beyond the local level. This year's retreat will again support the growth and development of our elected and appointed leaders to effectively conduct the business of Zeta. Please make note of all of the upcoming activities and events for the 2014-2015 sorority year.

On Thursday, May 1, 2014, under the leadership of Brother Wayne Allen, President, the brothers of Zeta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. hosted their annual “Dare to Dream” Awards Banquet at the exquisite Forum Caterers in Baltimore, Maryland. Phi Beta Sigma is concerned and involved in meeting the needs of the community and acknowledging those who help the community through philanthropic and service efforts.

State Director Danielle R. Green received the first 2014 Supportive Sister of the Year award her devoted support and commitment to Zeta Sigma Chapter. Director Green dedicates her time, talent and resources to aiding and furthering the chapter’s initiative and physically supports as many events as possible. She also encourages the sorors of the Marvelous State of Maryland to support Sigma events.

Also honored during this stupendous event, were the following individuals: Bettye M. Adams (Education); Kevin Parson (Education); Albert A. Spence (Bigger Better Business); Donald Tynes, Sr. (Bigger Better Business); Joseph T. Jones, Jr. (Social Action); O.J. Brigance (Champion of Courage)

and Zachary Grant (Champion of Courage). Each awardee’s accolades were awe-inspiring and compelled the attendees to strive to continue the task of uplifting and serving the community. The 2014 Maryland State Leadership Conference

was held March 21-23 at the beauteous Hyatt

Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf and Spa Resort in

Cambridge, MD. Iota Chi Zeta Chapter of Zeta

Phi Beta Sorority Inc. served as the host for a

weekend of rejuvenation and recommitment to the

principles of our beloved sorority. Under the

direction of Maryland State Director Danielle R.

Green, sorors were reminded to continue the

journey of “Making Maryland Marvelous” through

3M Leadership: Management, Membership and

Missions.

In the spirit of service and implementing the

national Adopt-a-School initiative, Sorors began

the weekend by presenting over 1,000 books to

Choptank Elementary School through the Z-HOPE

Adopt-A-School initiative. The school was very

appreciative of the literacy gift. Late Friday

afternoon, the business of Zeta commenced with

the state’s executive board meeting. The sorors of

the marvelous state of Maryland were able to

deviate from the normal business attire in support

of the “Blue Jeans for Babies” campaign. Sorors

great supported the effort and wore jeans to raise

money for our National partnership with the

March of Dimes. To conclude Friday’s business

activities, State Director Green conducted the new

Membership Intake Process (MIP) training. Sorors

were intrigued, eager and interested to listen and

learn the new process. Members throughout the

training were able to visualize the transformation

of the old MIP to new one. Although there were

several enhancements, the end result will be an

organization that will continue to uphold the

principles of Service, Scholarship, Sisterhood and

Finer Womanhood that our Five Pearls held

dearly.

Bright and early Saturday morning, Sorors gathered for the Necrology and Rededication cere-monies. Immediately after, Sorors and Amicae convened to continue the Leadership Conference. It was a beautiful sight to witness Sorors from across the state hold hands and sing our National Hymn in unison. The respect of “Soror”, “Sister” and “Friend” rang throughout the conference. During the awards luncheon, Z-HOPE awards were presented to the local chapters for their work in implementing national service initiatives. It was officially announced that Choptank Elementary School would be Maryland’s adopted school. Several members of the state were inducted into The State of Maryland Hall of Fame. After lunch, Sorors attended various workshops including the Protocol and Etiquette workshop led by State Protocol Coordinator, Soror Camelia Clark. The installation of State Officers was conducted immediately following the workshops. Soror Syleena Johnson gave a phenomenal concert that inspired and entertained the audience with the memories of her life as a Zeta and a love story through song.

The Leadership Conference concluded on a high note with an inspiration breakfast that included an inspirational song and message. In all, the weekend truly reflected the vision of our Five Pearls and the dedication of each state soror.

The Phenomenal Ladies of Phi Alpha

Zeta Chapter (AZ), located in Charles County, Maryland have been produc-tive in upholding the principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. while continu-ing to make a difference in their com-

munity. AZ began the year with their annual co-sponsorship of Safe Nights, a program designed to house homeless residents during the coldest months of the year. Sorors provided breakfast to program participants, as well as snacks for them to enjoy during the

day. With a focus on Charles County’s homeless residents, AZ sorors donated a few dozen sets of bed linen to LifeStyles, a local organization that provides resources to those in need and participated in the Walk to End Homelessness. Over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season,

AZ donated care packages, hot meals and food baskets to three active duty military families and two senior citizens within the community. The chapter donated trinkets for gift bags used for the Breakfast with Santa program held every December at Health Partners Free Clinic, located in Wal-dorf, Maryland. Break-fast with Santa allowed

kids that normally do not have the opportunity, to visit with Santa Claus

while enjoying breakfast provided by Chick-fil-A. AZ participated in sev-eral Founders’ Day observances, including co-sponsoring the DMV Joint Founders’ Day Celebration and enjoying Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Centennial celebrations throughout the region.

Spring community service projects included co-sponsorship of the Christ-mas in April program, hosting their 4th Annual Children’s Health Fair fea-turing the Easter Bunny, participating in the March of Dimes Walk and volunteering at a fundraiser called “Touch a Truck” which benefits the Center for Children, a local non-profit organization that provides mental health services to children and their families. The highlights of Phi Alpha Zeta’s sorority year were winning Z-HOPE Awards at the 2013 Atlantic Regional Conference and 2014 Maryland State Leadership Conference for the category of 5-25 members and inducting four phenomenal ladies into the sisterhood on April 13, 2014. New members Debborah Collins, Kim-berly Elliot, Candace Gaines and Ortese Parker were celebrated with a reception in May, where they show-cased their love for Zeta. Phi Alpha Zeta sorors are reviewing scholarship applications in anticipation of award-ing $2,500 in scholarships to local high school seniors late this summer.

Eta Pi Zeta Honors the Founding! In honor of Phi Beta Sigma Centennial and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s 94th year anniversary, Eta Pi

Zeta () Chapter in conjunction with Sigma

Sigma Sigma () Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma presented the play: A Sisterhood is Born at the joint Founders’ Day Program on January 19, 2014. The play was originally written by Soror Theda A. Williams, charter member of Gamma Tau Zeta chapter (Pensacola, FL) in 1953 and updated by Sorors Gwenneth Corujo and Lisa Turner. Soror Corujo directed the production which reenacted the conception of the 1919 idea of a new sisterhood on Howard University cam-pus that led to the founding of our beloved sorority in 1920. It depicted the dream of Brother A. Lang-ston Taylor’s desires for a sister organization. He presented the idea to Brother Charles Taylor who ap-proached Founder Arizona Cleaver. Founder Cleaver was instrumental in convincing Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Pearl Neal and Fannie Pettie to form the sister organization that would be Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Several sorors and brother were cast in the play and the Sigma brothers served as stage hands. This pro-

ject could not have been successful without the cooperation of . It was a great collaboration of the two chapters and the group gave a stupendous performance reenacting the founding of our beloved so-rority. Immediately following the play, the chapter hosted a reception to celebrate the evening.

The cast members were:

The New Elder Care Initiative Eta Pi Zeta () Chapter adopted and formed a partnership with

Arcola Senior Living Apartment Building to launched the chapter's

Elder Care Initiative. Since Montgomery County has several senior

living facilities that provide extensive care and support for the elderly

population, this building was adopted to ensure that can help

seniors in Montgomery County. The chapter successfully held two

seminars for the elderly. On October 12, 2013, HPZ hosted an "Aging

is a Family Affair" seminar facilitated by Kathy Weber of Holy Cross

Caregiver Resource Center. The seminar focused on the role of the

caregiver as well as provided resources for caregivers and aging

adults. The audience left with information on how to transition into

the caregiver role successfully, and expectations, challenges and

strategies were provided. The aging adult left with information on how to adjust to the change of the lost

of some independence or the need for help.

On December 7, 2013, the chapter hosted a second seminar titled “Financial Planning for Older Adults”

which was facilitated by William Farlin, an elder care attorney. The seminar covered subjects such as

wills, power of attorney, estate planning, long term care and fi-

nancial stress. A wealth of knowledge was provided on how to

plan financially for the golden years and all the options. The in-

formation was beneficial for seniors and their family. There will

be follow-up seminars on specifics topics.

In addition to the seminars, the chapter provided other services,

entertainment for social programs and distributed Christmas

cards to the residents of Arcola Senior Living Apartment.

The W. Ruth Conway Scholarship

The W. Ruth Conway Scholarship is a scholarship named after one of our Zeta Dove, Soror

W. Ruth Conway. Soror Conway is a member of Lambda Gamma Zeta Chapter in Howard

County. The goal of the chapter is to award scholarship and/or book awards annually to

African-American high school seniors in Howard County who will attend college. This year,

the chapter awarded two $1,000 scholarships to Talyn Parker and Shanelle Adbullah. Both

recipients are from Glenelg High School in Columbia.

Pictured are Sorors Patreece Carter and Kathy J. Barrett with the recipients at their awards

ceremony on Friday, May 23, 2014. We wish these young ladies the best in their future edu-

cational endeavors.

A PRETTY & POLISHED AFFAIR

On Saturday, March 8, 2014, the ladies of Lambda Gamma Zeta chapter hosted their

first “A Pretty & Polished Affair” at Ridgley Community Center in Columbia, Maryland.

The event was hosted to offer FREE prom dresses, accessories, and suits to high school

seniors attending the prom. It was a day of pleasure for over 60 high school students

who received free items, some even leaving with two dresses or suits.

The event was so successful that the chapter is planning to host it again next year with

the anticipation of reaching over 100 students. From their efforts and support of the

Howard County youth, they have established a partnership with the Howard County

Public School System.

OXZ PAYS TRIBUTE TO CHARTER MEMBERS On Saturday, April 12, 2014, the chapter paid tribute to the charter members of Omicron Chi Zeta (OXZ): L. Lynn Boyd, Roberta Clay, Victoria Davis, Sheila Dews-Johnson, Carolyn Nutter Harris, Janice Grant, Triumphant Soror Dolores H. Janifer and Sabrina White.

Soror L. Lynn Boyd was initiated in 1992 via Mu Xi Zeta Chapter in Baltimore County, Mary-land. She is a Supervisory Chemist, US Army Public Health Command; and a ministry candidate. She cherishes all of the principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; however, she is most passionate about ser-vice. Three of her favorite Scriptures are Micah 6:8, Matt 25: 35-39; and Amos 5:34. Lynn’s philosophy is “we are to be in service to help all people in need and be an advocate for the oppressed”.

Soror Roberta Clay was initiated in 1992 via Mu Xi Zeta Chapter in Baltimore County, Maryland. She retired from the US Army Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1999 as an Operations Research Analyst serving as the Quality Manager for one of the laboratories. Roberta believes that Finer Womanhood, a unique principle of our Sorority, encompasses all the precepts of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Additionally Rob-erta believes Finer Womanhood challenges and encourages each of us to live a life of excellence at all times!

Soror Victoria Jeanne Davis was initiated into Delta Epsilon Chapter in 1985 at Indiana University in Bloomington Indiana. She is a lieutenant in law enforcement. She currently serves as the assistant commander at Baltimore Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport and commander of the Polygraph Unit. She embraces all of Zeta’s principles and recently graduated with a Master’s Degree in Management from Johns Hopkins University.

Soror Janice E.M. Grant was initiated into Mu Xi Zeta Chapter in 1993 and is a retired educator and a Civil Rights Activist. She has a Bache-lor's of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Maryland State Teachers College (Bowie State University), a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from UCLA, a Master's Degree in Secondary Education from Texas Southern University in Houston, a Master's Degree in African History and African Geography with a concentration in African-American History from the University of Liberia and a Bachelor of Business Degree from Wat-kins Institute in Nashville, Tennessee. She is an ordained minister and graduate of Gary Weston Worldwide Ministries (GWWM). Janice is a world traveler and while in Africa taught in the Peace Corps. Her most passionate principles are scholarship and service. She enjoys promoting education among youth and believes to whom much is given much is required.

Triumphant Soror Dolores H. Janifer was initiated into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. as an undergraduate. She was a member of Alpha Zeta Chap-

ter prior to assisting with the chartering of Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter. Dolores was a retired educator and taught in the Baltimore City Public School for over 30 years. After retiring from Baltimore City, she moved to Harford County and was a home school and home bound teacher. Dolores taught both English and foreign language and was the first president of the chapter. Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter honors her memory by providing graduating seniors scholarships through the chapter’s Dolores H. Janifer Memori-al Scholarship Fund.

Carolyn Nutter-Harris was initiated into Omicron Gamma Chapter in 1968. Carolyn has a Master’s degree in Family Counseling from the University of Maryland at College Park. She retired from the Har-ford County Public Schools as a Drug Education Facilitator. Of the sorority’s principles, she has a pas-sion for scholarship and service. Carolyn believes that people need to volunteer in the community and that individuals should continually strive for higher education and not stop at high school. After receiv-ing an undergraduate degree, one should continue with graduate school in a field of choice. For individ-uals who do not pursue college, pursue a trade in an area that you are passionate about.

2014 has been a busy but great and exciting year for Tau Eta Zeta (THZ)

Chapter. Standing firm on the principles in which our beloved sorority was

founded, Tau Eta Zeta Chapter implemented numerous activities dedicated

to Finer Womanhood, Scholarship, Service and Sisterhood for men, women,

children and seniors.

The year began with the chapter celebrating the sorority’s 94th anniversary

at the Green Turtle at Owings Mills on Thursday, January 16th. Sorors, joined

by the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma and other Pan Hellenic Council Greek affiliates socialized and

reminisced about past service activities and social events. Kudos to Soror Brandi J. Smith and the Social

Committee for planning a wonderful event.

Walking into the Helping Up Mission during the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, THZ Sorors were greeted with a sense of hope, warmth, appreciation and respect. The visit to the Helping Up Mission included a tour of the facility, explanation of the various programs/services offered and dinner service; where THZ Sorors served dinner, prepared by residents of the program, to over 400 men. It was at dinner service where the colors and the letters worn by sorors would spark what seemed to be a consistent theme: “My Mom is a Zeta.” As sorors served dinner, many of the residents would approach a soror with that familiar line, telling the stories of how their mothers, sisters, and

nieces were sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. This was powerful. It was evidence how closely connected we actually are to those who are most in need. However, it was that very personal connection to Zeta Phi Beta that made the experience all the more meaningful. On Saturday, January 25, 2014, THZ gathered to celebrate 94 years of service at the Sheraton Hotel in Towson, Maryland to honor the founding of our esteemed sorority. Sorors Theresa A. Lewis, Tamra D. Jackson, Wanda A. Calvin-Claiborne, Ruthann Mohammed and Nicole Spencer were very creative in performing presentations in honor of our five Founders through dramatizations, song, dance and recitation. Soror Roxanne Penix, Ellen Douglas-Smith and Lisa M. Hudley received the 2014 Meritorious Award. In addition, Soror Penix received the 2014 Humanitarian Award. Congratulations to all award recipients on their well deserved awards.

On Saturday, February 1st, THZ sponsored its annual community service

project: Heart for the Homeless at the historical War Memorial Plaza.

With the support of the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Omega Psi

Phi Fraternity and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, sorors collected donations of

warm clothing/coats and hot foods to give to the homeless men and women of Baltimore City.

Tau Eta Zeta Chapter hosted its Finer Womanhood Jazz Brunch on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the

gorgeous North Baltimore Plaza in Timonium, Maryland. A record number of over a 110 guests attended

this event themed, “A Blue Era, the Journey of a Finer Woman, 1920 to Present”. The chapter was

honored to have Life Member Soror Neva Brown (Alpha Zeta) as the keynote speaker and in addition to

the numerous awards and scholarships disseminated, Soror Josephine C.

Barton was presented the 2014 Zeta of the Year Award.

The Z-HOPE Day of Service was held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Edgecombe Elementary/Middle School from 11 am - 2 pm. The day was highlighted by fifteen (15) community partners, four (4) health and safety presenters, four (4) workshops that focused on health and financial well being, a HIV/STD mobile, 92Qs street team, one retail vendor, a food pantry, and a children’s area hosted by our chapter.

Maryland’s First Gubernatorial Forum Delta Zeta Zeta Chapter made history, as one of the members of the newly

created organization, the Prince George’s County Women’s Alliance

(PGCWA), when it hosted the first Maryland Gubernatorial Candidates

Forum in Prince George’s County on April 28, 2014. The Social Action

event was a great success and was covered in the media by the Bowie Blade

and other media outlets. The event drew over 500 attendees and six Can-

didates for Governor of Maryland participated. It was a bipartisan event

that included four Democratic candidates: Lt. Governor Anthony Brown,

Attorney General Doug Gansler, Delegate Heather Mizeur and Cindy

Walsh as well as two Republican Candidates for Governor: Delegate Ron

George and businessman Charles Lollar. As the Protocol Chair for the

event, Soror Delna Gray, Esq., Basileus of Delta Zeta Zeta, had the honor

of personally inviting the gubernatorial candidates and the other elected

politicians.

It was a fantastic event that the PGCWA worked hard to achieve. The Prince George’s County chapters of AKA, DST, Zeta (Delta Zeta Zeta & Tau Delta Zeta Chapters) and Sigma Gamma Rho comprised the PGCWA combined efforts; meeting over seven months, raising money, working with politicians and local media outlets to achieve this success. We also established partnerships with the Prince George’s County Chapters of the Chamber of Commerce and the women of the NAACP, to make this event a success.

The event took place at the Bowie Center for Performing Arts. The Bowie High

School ROTC Color guard participated as well as some student government and

national honor society members who shadowed the gubernatorial candidates

for the night. During the event, we also held a voter registration drive.

Implementing the Grand’s Initiatives in Harford County

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Omicron Chi Zeta (OXZ) Chapter has been implementing Grand Wright’s Initiatives in the Harford County com-munity. On April 26, 2014, members of the chapter participated in ServeFest because OXZ believed in the event’s theme; “There's no bet-ter way to spring into action than by joining thousands of people from hundreds of churches from all across the Baltimore region who unite together to serve in practical and meaningful ways within their commu-nity”. As a part of OXZ’s Elder Care Initiative, members of the chapter cleaned the yards of the seniors in Somerset Manor, a housing develop-ment for seniors in Havre De Grace, Maryland. Sorors raked yards and threw away unwanted items.

On Sunday, April 27th, OXZ members, a member of the chapter’s Male Net-work, community supporters participated in the March of Dimes – March for Babies. Sorors walked, fellowshipped, and raised over $1,000.00 for a worthy cause.

On Sunday, May 25th, Sorors gathered at Messiah Community Baptist Church in Abingdon, Maryland to participate in the “St. Jude – Sunday of Hope”. Reverend Dr. Argie Araujo’s message “Don’t forget God’s divine benefits” was not only inspirational but befitting of the occasion. Sorors thanked Pastor Araujo and the Messiah congregation for a warm reception.

THZ participated in the Maryland State Bar Association’s Leadership Academy’s (MSBALA) fight to rally against some of these horrific crimes perpetuated against Hispanic immigrants. On Saturday, April 5, 2014 the MSBALA held a free public service event on the Patterson High School Campus to serve the Hispanic community by providing information about rights in the workplace, Visas for victims of crimes and human trafficking and other vital resources. THZ accepted the invitation to participate and promote the Stork’s Nest by giving out pamphlets in Spanish and educating community participants about the services available. THZ’s Stork’s Nest is located at the Baltimore Medical System at St. Agnes Hospital (Baltimore, MD) and has served several Hispanic expecting mothers by promoting prematurity awareness and educating them about the benefits of prenatal care.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the American Brewery, the ladies of Tau Eta Zeta chapter hosted another successful signature event, Promoting domestic violence awareness. This year’s event was titled “Light the Lantern: Life-After Domestic Violence”. The intimate and impactful event hosted 74 guests who helped to collect 119 handbags and 206 full sized toiletry items for the House of Ruth clients. During the event, three vacant chairs decorated with caution tape strategically placed in the workshop to represent victims of domestic violence; special presentations from guest speakers Ashley “The Weeping Poet” and Faith Saville of the House of Ruth provided information about abuse; a video presentation featured personal testimonies from an actual domestic violence survivor, legal advisors from the House Of Ruth and THZ sorors who reflected on their life experiences and relationships with fallen doves Soror Nichelle Scarborough and Soror Sharon K. Harvey and lastly, to close out the evening, there was a group prayer in remembrance of all of the victims of domestic violence.

Archonettes Alexander Burch, Divine Eke, Glory Kang, Lo-gan Kelly, Alexandra Gardner, and Orela Anani. Graduates of Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD and members of Delta Zeta Zeta Chapter Youth Auxiliary.

On Saturday, March 22nd, the Tau Delta Zeta Chapter Archonette Club

was awarded the Auxiliary of the Year award at the 2014 Maryland

State Leadership Conference. This was a well-deserved and a truly

humbling honor.

TDZ’s Archonette Club was first initiated in the fall of 2010 and has

been flourishing ever since. These young ladies have done great work

in Prince George’s County as well as the surrounding communities.

The Archonette Club has hosted and participated in several programs

ranging from Teen Intimate Partner Violence and Bullying, Nutrition and Fitness, an Image and Self-

Esteem workshop and have also taken an active role in the Elder Care Initiative. TDZ’s Archonette Club

has also participated in the March of Dimes March for Babies walk.

Our Archonette Club is made up of a group of talented, outgoing, and passionate young ladies. One area

where the girls have blossomed has been working with the Elder Care Initiative. The Archonette Club

has spent several Saturdays playing bingo and singing Christmas Carols during the holidays with one of

our community partners, the Residents on Greenbelt. Over the past several years the chapter has men-

tored these young ladies into the finer women they are now.

This year, the Archonette Club has three graduating seniors and the chapter could not be more proud.

Two of the three young ladies have been with the club since its inception. Archonette Briana Kinder,

club President, was accepted to Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, Archonette Mikayla Brookins,

club Secretary, was accepted to Virginia Wesleyan College and Archonette Keyara Blackmon, club As-

sistant Secretary, was accepted to Stevenson University and Frostburg State University. The chapter

will miss the young ladies and wish nothing but the best for them.

On Saturday, May 3, 2014, TDZ inducted five new young ladies to the Archonette club.

Sabrina V. White was initiated into Mu Xi Zeta Chapter in 1990. She is a chemist for the Department of the Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Sabrina develops comprehensive monitoring system practices for laboratories and monitoring activities and conduct oversight to ensure that the compre-hensive system is effectively implemented. In doing this she ensures that the employees, public and the environ-ment are protected through a viable quality system while chemical materials are being stored and destroyed all over the world. She is passionate about all of the sorority's principles and especially puts the service principle to use personally and equate that to the bible verse in Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Sabrina believes helping somebody is one of her objectives in life.

On Saturday, June 14, 2014, the tena-

cious sorors of Tau Eta Zeta Chapter

came together once again to party

with a purpose. The chapter hosted

its 8th Annual Cabaret to raise mon-

ey for the Sharon K. Harvey Memori-

al Foundation, Inc. at the Pikesville

Town Hall located in Pikesville, Mar-

yland. The theme this year was a

“Blue Carpet for an All White Affair.”

It was a beautiful sight to behold, as THZ’s guests were

dressed from head to toe in all white and the sorors ac-

cented the room in the lovely and beautiful royal blue. So-

rors and guests alike enjoyed dancing, socializing and net-

working. To also aid in the fundraising experience the

chapter held a raffle for a bountiful basket of cheer and a

50/50 raffle.

Tau Eta Zeta was honored to have in attendance Soror Dan-

ielle R. Green, Maryland State Director and Frater John

Berkley, President of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council of

the Pan Hellenic Council. Words can not express how ap-

preciative we are of the love and support from our sister

chapters: Alpha Zeta, Eta Pi Zeta, Lambda Gamma Zeta,

Mu Xi Zeta, Tau Delta Zeta, Chi Beta Zeta, and Phi Upsilon

Zeta as well as our brothers of Phi Beta Fraternity, Inc. and

Fellow Greeks.

The chapter invites all to join us at the Roaring Twenties

Scholarship Fundraiser on Saturday, November 8th at the

beauteous La Fontaine Bleue in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

amazing Founders’ Day Luncheon celebration on

Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Greenbelt

Marriott Hotel. With the theme of 94 Years

Strong and the Legacy Continues, this event

chronicled the life and expansion of Zeta Phi Beta

from 1920 to present times by highlighting various

achievements as well as incorporating the fashion

of the times.

Tau Delta Zeta Chapter was thrilled to award

Soror Karen Arrington with the Living the Legacy

Award. Soror Arrington founded the Miss Black

USA Scholarship Pageant, the nation’s first

scholarship pageant for African-American

Women. Through Soror Arrington’s tireless

efforts, she has proven that Zeta is a “friend to

man” and opened doors and opportunities for

many young, African-American Women that

otherwise would be naught.

Tau Delta Zeta Chapter was privileged to host our

International Grand Basileus, Soror Mary Breaux

Wright, who served as the keynote speaker. Soror

Wright gave an electrifying speech to a filled room

of Sorors, Fraters, and guests, which pricked the

hearts of anyone who was under the sound of her

voice. Soror Wright journeyed through 94 years of

Zeta Phi Beta; proving that through every

challenge life threw their way, our Founders kept

their “Zeta Light” shining and on. Soror Wright

challenged every Zeta to keep our light shining

and continue to make Zeta Phi Beta Sorority

premier amongst all others.

Lastly, Tau Delta Zeta held an Elder Care

Initiative at the Residences on Greenbelt on

February 22, 2014 from 3pm – 5pm. The Elder

Care Initiative is a series of activities Tau Delta

Zeta has planned to support our International

Grand Basileus’ agenda on Elder Care in America.

The elderly community is one that is often

overlooked and neglected. Through this new

initiative, Tau Delta Zeta is looking to make a

difference in the life of the elderly community in

Northern Prince George’s County.

Celebrating 94 Years of Service

In an effort to provide African-American family caregivers with the critical support and information they need, The Black Women's Agenda, Inc. (BWA) and AARP have partnered to launch "Because We Care" - a series of free forums designed to provide Black women and their families with the resources and tools that will enable them to take better care of their loved ones and themselves.

During interactive panel discussions, health, financial and legal experts will share caregiving resources, discuss how to prepare for family caregiving, and talk about how to protect your mental and physical health while caring for a loved one. They will also address questions and concerns raised by more than forum attendees.

The event will be hosted by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. State of Maryland and held at the Zeta Center for Healthy and Active Aging on August 2, 2014.
