The Messenger The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Olney, Maryland October 2014 “Loving God by Helping My Neighbor The biblical theme for our upcoming four Sunday October worship is, “Loving God by helping my neighbor.” It’s based on Jesus’ beloved Good Samaritan parable in Luke 10. What precipitates this unforgettable story is our Lord being legally challenged by an “expert in the law.” The lawyer demands, “Of all the commandments, which one is most important?” (Mark 12:28). Jesus’ memorable response is, “Love God by helping your neighbor.” The legal expert testily counters, “Who is my neighbor?” In his Good Samaritan anecdote, Jesus answers two questions. “Who is my neighbor?” And “To what extent must I help my neighbor?” Two additional inquiries are raised. The priest and the Levite ponder, “What will it mean for us to get involved?” And the Samaritan inquires, “What will it mean to the injured victim if I don’t help?” Reggie McNeal is the author of Get Off Your Donkey! Help Somebody And Help Yourself . His text is based on the Good Samaritan parable. Reggie surmises Jesus’ answer to the lawyer’s overall commandment question is our life’s purpose. You and I exist, by God’s grace, to love the Lord our God with all our hearts by helping others. Yet to do so, we must do as the Samaritan, get off our donkeys! What does that mean and how challenging is it? Our four worship Sundays in October, including Reformation Sunday, October 26, will highlight Jesus’ beloved parable and McNeal’s book. Matt Quinn will facilitate a 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning Adult Bible Class discussion using the text. Various members of our Good Shepherd family will weekly share their “Get off my donkey” testimonials in addition to my morning message. On Reformation Sunday we will correlate the Samaritan parable with the Lutheran three Solas : Grace, Faith and Scripture alone. We are saved by grace through faith for a lifetime of sliding off our donkeys to love God by helping our neighbor. Loving God and helping my neighbor is the biblical foundation for our 2015 Good Shepherd stewardship. Stewardship is “the free and joyous activity of the child of God (us) and God’s family, the church (LCGS) in managing all of life and life’s resources for God’s purposes.” My favorite stewardship bible verse is John 3:16. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Stewardship giving never begins and ends with us. We may give upwards of a tithe, but at the Cross, Jesus gives us 100%! “Now to him who is able to give immeasurably far more than all we ask and dream, according to his love at work within us, to him be all glory.” (Ephesians 3:20, 21). Be blessed to bless,

“Loving God by Helping My Neighbor

The biblical theme for our upcoming four Sunday October worship is, “Loving God by helping my neighbor.” It’s based on Jesus’ beloved Good Samaritan parable in Luke 10. What precipitates this unforgettable story is our Lord being legally challenged by an “expert in the law.” The lawyer demands, “Of all the commandments, which one is most important?” (Mark 12:28). Jesus’ memorable response is, “Love God by helping your neighbor.” The legal expert testily counters, “Who is my neighbor?”

In his Good Samaritan anecdote, Jesus answers two questions. “Who is my neighbor?” And “To what extent must I help my neighbor?” Two additional inquiries are raised. The priest and the Levite ponder, “What will it mean for us to get involved?” And the Samaritan inquires, “What will it mean to the injured victim if I don’t help?”

Reggie McNeal is the author of Get Off Your Donkey! Help Somebody And Help Yourself.

On Reformation Sunday we will correlate the Samaritan parable with the Lutheran three Solas: Grace, Faith and Scripture alone.

IF IT’S OCTOBER…. Just because you know what’s coming, please don’t pass this article by. Yes, it is Stewardship month and we will be asking for pledges for 2015 but we have a lot to offer you this month. This year’s theme is “Get Off Your Donkey” - taken from the book by Reggie McNeal that was the focus of the District’s conference in August. We will of course have inspiring messages from members during worship. Pastor’s sermons and the Sunday Adult Bible Class study will feature the book. We will be focusing on the parable of the Good Samaritan. It is a wonderful stewardship story. The Good Samaritan used all three T’s of stewardship. Can you say the same about your stewardship? Don’t know what the three T’s are? There are many ways to find out.

My family and I wish to express many thanks for your kind expression of sympathy during my husband's stroke and death. Your support, cards, phone calls and generous donations meant a great deal to all of us. It is comforting for me to know I am among such caring people. Thank you Thank you Thank you Marion Ivkovich

God in MY Life A Request for You to Share

Pastor Pat and I are excited about there being a column in this newsletter for our Good Shepherd family to share stories from their lives in which it was obvious that God had directed the events to accomplish His purpose for you.

For this month I have written one that happened to me a lot of years ago but the result changed my life from that point on. I know MANY of us have had similar situations happen in which it became SO clear that God was leading you and THOSE stories are what we are hoping for. Please call me, or write your story, and email it to me. If you don’t want to write it and can give me just the facts, I will be happy to compose it for your final approval.

Thank you SO MUCH. In today’s depressing world, we all need to hear the Good News that God is still in charge. Nancy Wald

Rosa Parks Middle School Thanks You!

We were delighted to be able to deliver seven large containers of school supplies to Rosa Parks Middle School just in time for the start of the school year. The leadership team at Rosa Parks was so appreciative of the binders, filler paper, pencils, backpacks, and other supplies that we sent. This year we even had a generous cash donation that we used to buy extra supplies. Thank you so much for your outpouring of support for this community activity! There are so many students who will now have a strong head start as they begin their studies with supplies in hand, thanks to you. Board of Social Ministry

Dear Members of LCGS,

We had a wonderful start to the school year. All of our children adjusted very nicely and easily made new friends.

In September our themes were Back to School, All about Me and Making Friends. We studied the letters “A”, “B” and “C”. We read a lot of books and really loved “The Story of Creation.”

On Tuesdays, our music teacher taught us wonderful new songs. On Wednesdays in Kid-Fit we exercised and learned about keeping our lungs healthy. Both music and Kid-Fit will be offered weekly. Every week we look forward to Chapel Time with Pastor Pat.

The weather was so beautiful we spent time every day on the playground. We certainly hope October brings the same incredible weather. We are excited for our field trip to Clark’s Elioak Farm on October 10th.

Sincerely, Emily Cottone

“The Invention of Wings”

by

Sue Monk Kidd When Sarah is 10 years old in 1803 she was given ownership of 10 year old “Handful” who was to be her handmaid. The Invention of Wings follows their remarkable journeys over the next 35 years as both strive for lives of their own. Handful will endure loss and sorrow, finding courage and a sense of self in the process. Sarah will experience crushed hopes, betrayal, unrequited love and ostracism before leaving Charleston to be a pioneer in the abolition and woman's rights movement. Based partly on the life of Sarah Grimke, the author adds a sprinkling of drama to enrich the telling of this historical story. So bring a Southern dish and your thoughts on life in the South and the rights of Women. After all it only took two hundred years for the women in this country to get the vote!

The Lunch Bunch will meet next on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 - 12:00 noon

Bible Verse to Remember

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

On September 9 the Lunch Bunch resumed its meetings after taking off during the summer. It was surprising to see 9 1/2 people make the meeting. You are wondering where the 1/2 person comes from? Well, Pastor Pat showed up about half-way through the lunch meeting. However, Pastor Pat had a good reason for being late and the Lunch Bunch forgives him.

Everyone brings their own lunch and some people bring various foods to share. Looking around at the variety of foods proves that all of us "old folks" haven't forgotten how to eat.

The group talked about a variety of topics from children who have disabilities to a recent funeral and experiences dealing with dental problems. By far the most interesting was a discussion about which baseball team would be in the World Series. I will not give out her name, but Laura was wearing a Baltimore shirt and strongly protested that the rest of us were wrong in thinking that Washington would be in the World Series. Laura mentioned that one of our LCGS members, Jim T., agreed LOUDLY with her.

In case you are interested, the Lunch Bunch meets each second Tuesday of the month at noon. We welcome everyone; just bring your "eats" and a drink.

God’s Guidance in My Life Kim and I were living in Lakewood, Ohio, a western suburb of Cleveland with our four children who were then 2-9 years of age. Kim was born and grew up in Fairview Park which is where our church was. In 1971 Kim was working for

the City of Cleveland for the first black mayor of a major city but that term was coming to an end and there was no job on the horizon at that time. He was very consumer oriented and having been in the insurance industry prior to working for the city, he saw in an industry publication that a very consumer oriented man had been appointed to be Insurance Commissioner for the state of PA. Kim wrote a congratulatory letter to the State Dept. of Insurance there to let them know he thought they were doing a great job. Shortly afterwards he received a call asking if he would like to join them and thus began the effort to sell our house and search for one in the Harrisburg, PA area. It meant leaving Kim’s mother following the death of his dad only a few years earlier, and being an only child, it meant we were taking away all of her grandchildren. Not only that, we were active in our church there, had always lived in Ohio, and being active in local activities as well, I in particular really did not want to leave. I remember telling God that it just didn’t feel right to me to take the children away from her. I went so far as to bargain with God and said “It feels so wrong, so show me in FOUR ways why we should do this!!! Well guess what – HE DID!” First Kim was in line for a job in the Cleveland area that just did not work out, even though it had been promised to him. Second, the job offer he received in Pennsylvania was not the motive when he made the congratulatory phone call. They sincerely wanted him as part of the team. Third, our house in Ohio sold in a matter of days to a fellow Kim worked with. Fourth and last of all, we drove to the Harrisburg area and were shown three houses; one was in a lovely new development in a western suburb which we both instantly fell in love with. “OK God, I surrender,” and thus in a matter of three weeks, we were off to that area which after eight years then led to our coming to Maryland, the Federal Government, and Good Shepherd. God definitely showed us where He wanted us to be. Nancy Wald

Need for Ushers and 8:15 Readers Thank You to those who have come forward and offered to be Greeters and Ushers. I am extremely grateful to you;

HOWEVER, I still need: • Ushers for 8:15 • Ushers for 11:00 and • Especially need Readers for 8:15

The same people are being asked to read over and over thus more people would lighten the work for them. Please consider if you can serve in our services in one of these ways, then contact me either by calling the church office at 301-774-9125 and leaving a message with Sarah for me, OR email me at [email protected] Please consider if our Stewardship theme “Get Off Your Donkey” is a way for you to give where there is a need that is NOT FINANCIAL. Thank you and Blessings, Nancy Wald
