marstall – a success storyMore than 35 years ago, Moritz Spring from Swit-zerland developed the first muesli purely for horses and launched it onto the market under the name of “marstall”. He didn’t realise that “marstall” would take on such dimensions, but was driven only by his clear vision of horse feed. After starting off on a small scale with a factory and 20 employ-ees, “marstall” has become a growing consortium throughout Europe with four manufacturing works employing over 150 people.

Horses need to be fed according to the different breeds, different lifestyles and dif-ferent circumstances in order to stay fit and healthy in the long run. We discovered early on in our research that horses fed only on forage and oats are not being provid-ed with sufficient energy, nutrients and roughage. These vital ingredients are usually found in the plant reserves that are drastically diminishing.This knowledge led us to become the first feed producer in Europe to develop varied, natural pre-mixed muesli’s tailored to the horse’s requirements. The basis of all our muesli’s being our hydrothermic macerated cereal flakes.

of protein value are the requirements needed for marstall-muesli flakes. After thorough inspection of incoming raw materials, the grain gets washed sev-eral times and then processed gently The marstall team places high demands on all of the suppliers involved, with strict and stringent requirements of all products that are used.

Hydrothermal treatmentWe see ourselves as pioneers in the field of mod-ern horse feeding. marstall introduced this process into Europe 35 years ago, and has perfected it since. The results are easily digestable, light cereal flakes. The horse becomes all the goodness and nutrition it needs. It is also an economic way of feeding- small portions with a big impact. (For details see page 8).

Highly digestable fibreThe horse is a steppe animal, and depends on crude fibres as a part of its staple diet, in order for its digestive system to work properly. Sadly, fact is that the diversity, of nature, earlier found in our pastures and grazing lands have diminished in latter years. There are less and less grasses and herbs found growing in the wild. Our team from marstall became aware of this problem and reacted early enough, by integrating various components into our formula-tions. Our products are tailored to every horses needs, helping them to keep a healthy balanced diet. We also use sources of raw fibres with less starch but high in fibre.

Secondary plant substancesThe positive influences of secondary plant substances, such as the antioxidative effect in cells, is still unexplored. Prof.Fahrendorf has been researching in this area for many years. He has succeeded in developing a special feed-crop breed in broccoli-cabbage, which has an extremely high proportion of secondary plant substances ( ie: Sul-foraphane), that can be extracted. This ingredi-ent has shown a postive effect on horses suffering from stomach problems and cribbing and weaving. (see page 72).

Quality protein and amino acidsRaw protein is essential for growth, repair of the body and for your horses performance. Our marstall team feel that quality protein is especially important. It is not the quantity, it’s the quality that matters. The extraction of protein-supporters in natural products of plants, containing high levels of

essental amino acids, are known as the “building blocks” of protein. Together with Prof. Spona, who is renound in the field of amino acid research, we have developed an amino acid formula which is used in our muesli feeds, and is the first of its kind on the market.(see page 32).

Rapeseed oil and linseed-safflower oilCertain plant oils contain essential fatty acids which are providers of energy, needed for your horses de-velopment. Gently extracted.rapeseed oil has a high amount of unsaturated fatty acids, Ω3- und Ω6 and is rich in vitamin E and carotenoids.

Herbs in natural qualityHerbs have played a major role in marstall-feeds for many years. Not only because of the taste but also due to the positive effects that herbs have on your horse. Herbal mixes are indispensable and have proven to be successful in practice. We use them exclusively in their natural state, de-stemmed or cut.

Dried-apple-pommace„An apple a day keeps the doctor away.“ Horses not only love eating apples, they have a very positive effect on their organism. We use an ex-tremely gentle extracting process, keeping the good-ness and energy needed. Tastes good and does the horse good.

Natural vitamins and trace elements.Horses need vitamins and trace elements daily. They are better for their oraganism when taken in their organic form. marstall use special vitamin formulas, which have proven successful over the years. Whenever possible, we prefer to add the vi-tamins to our mixtures in their native forms, ie. with beta-carotene through carrot flakes.

1. HistoryHyracotherium, also known as Eohippus, is the horses ancestor. This species lived in woodlands and fed on leaves and bark. The subspecies, Equus Przewalski evolved nearly 3 million years ago. These were the first wild horses native to the steppes, which adapted to life in the wild, feeding on steppe grass.

TodayMixed rations, divided into small rations: basic feed (hay/straw/grass/silage), concentrated feed (cereals,grains/pellets/muesli), supplements (minerals/vitamins/vital nutrients).

OriginallyWhether millions of years ago in the steppe, or today as animal friendly pasture keeping: The horse spends up to 12–16 hours with its food intake, gradually progressing at a slow pace.

The horse has a lower amylase, therefore, has a limited capacity to digest cereal starch. When large amounts of undigested starch should reach the caecum, they would be degrad-ed by microorganisms. In the course of this process, short-chain fatty acids would be produced, sinking the pH value in the caecum. This causes an inbalance of bacteria of the normal flora. The effects would be noxious fermentation, energy loss, vitamin B deficiency and ailments such as acidosis, hoof-laminitis, diarrhoea and colic could be provoked.

Therefore, starch feeds need to be digested in the small intestine enzymatically in high amounts, so that absorbtion can take place.

Easily digestible starch is achieved through hydrothermal treatment processing.

Hydrothermal cereal treatment using maize as an example

The original marstall hydrothermal process encases the cereal starch. The impact of moisture, warmth and pres-sure on the cereal flakes results in nutrients being successfully predigested, and enzymatic degradation of starch to maltose in the small intestine can be efficiently absorbed by the horse. The optimal combination of macerated cereals is the basis of all marstall-feeds. Practicality and highly competent scientific research of our components, play an important role in all our products.

Ration PlanningA balanced ration is based on:1. Maintenance requirements (depends mainly on the weight of the horse, see marstall-horse-scales page 78)2. Energy demand (based on the nature and the level of activity, and also the stage of life, i.e. growth, gestation, lacta-tion, etc.) Make use of our free marstall-ration-calculation service (see page 78)

Haferfrei is a pleasant tasting universal horse feed in muesli form, which has proven through the gen-erations to be the best basic component of the daily feed. Horses that are fed on Haferfrei perform well and are even-tempered. The quality of the feed has been confirmed by the loyalty of our customers over the years.

Haferfrei is composed of hydrothermal macerated muesli flakes that are easy to digest and highly nu-tritious special pellets. Horses are satisfied with a low dosage of feed which provides the right amount of daily nutrients, due to the easily digestible cereal flakes and the high content of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It is therefore possible to reduce the total amount of concentrated feed per day. Haferfrei - the original

supplement can be spared if the feeding recommen-dation is followed. Haferfrei is therefore extremely economical.

As cereals have a close ratio of Ca:P, Haferfrei has been specially designed with a ratio of 3:1 of Ca:P making it the ideal combination feed.

The two-fold mineralization and vitamination makes Haferfrei suitable for the targeted 1:1 ratio to be mixed with your own oats, pellets or another cereal / type of muesli. In this way an in-house or individually balanced concentrated feed can be put together ac-cording to performance demands.

Haferfrei meets the demands of all horses and pro-vides enough vitamins, minerals and above all the trace elements which cannot be sufficiently found in hay (copper, zinc and selenium).

marstall Freizeit – An appetising muesli feed, free from whole oats. Low in protein and energy with lots of crude fibres and easily digestible! Ideal for horses used for leisure, at rest or doing light to moderate work. A fully balanced feed with vita-mins and minerals. For an economical universal feeding.

Light to moderate working horses and light-feed breeds tend to gain weight quickly. That’s why a feed should contain lots of crude fibres, with a low energy and protein content. Also a large amount of vitamins and minerals are essentail so that the the daily feeding dosage can be kept at a low level.Inexpensive horse feeds found on the museli market are often very low in mineral and vitamin counts and most of the time don’t contain hydrothermal macer-ated cereals. Crushed grains orh whole maize and barley are not as digestible as hydrothermally treat-ed cereals. Hydrothermally treated muesli is lighter and can be completely digested this is ideal for a healthy intestine and also helps minimise the loss of energy.

Even thoughl Freizeit is an economical alternative to universal mueslis, it still contains, like all of our marstall-mueslis, the easily digestible hydrothermal macerated cereal flakes (without oats). Due to the high crude fibre content Freizeit is an energy re-duced and low protein product, with all the important minerals and, trace elements and vitamins needed for an optimal nutritional diet, ideally suited to lei-sure horses. The content of copper, zink and sele-nium supplement the low levels found in German hay. Freizeit is therefore ideal for feeding horses of all breeds that are resting or doing light to moderate work .

With Freizeit horses having to take box rest or long-er periods of low exrecise -, pasture or open stable kept, are adequately provided for.If Freizeit is fed less than the stated amount, then the missing minerals and vitamins can be supple-mented by feeding marstall Force Horses needing higher energy levels (i.e due to reg-ular riding, lungeing or driving) can combine Freizeit with extra oats or with one of our marstall-Sport feeds.

Contains complete vitamin and mineral formula for the daily feed of horses of all breeds and performance levels. Ideal for every keeping method and stock size.

Nutri-Pellet the marstall-pellet, which is of high quality and highly digestible. The basis being hydrothermal macerated ce-real flakes. In addition, the formula has been refined with apple pommace, linseed and further valuable substances. The rich in fibre content and coarse components of the Nutri-Pellet have a lower swelling ability and therefore this encour-ages the natural chewing action of the horse. This results in the building of saliva which in turn activiates the digestion and aids the intestinal tract and helps the total feed consumption. The aroma of the apple pommace is responsible for the good flavour and even encourages the fussy horse to take a trip to the feeding trough. Due to oats not being present Nutri-Pellet is also ideal for ex-citable and nervous horses. Binding agents and preservatives are not contained or added.

Nutri-Pellet is practical and is compactly formed. It has a high apparant density, therefore needing less storage space and lengthening the shelf life. The feed can be rationed, there is no diluting and therefore is ideally suited to firms with auto-matic feeding machines.

None cereal based and free from molas-ses, low in starch and sugars but rich in crude fibre with a broad spectrum of valuable ingre-dients. The recipe has been optimised according to sci-entific findings.

Vito based on structured carbohydrates („NDF“), low in sugar and starch. A conditional feed with a low glycemic and insulinemic index. This is the reason why this feed is ideal for horses suf-fering from diabetes or starch incompatibility or in general, sensitive to fructan.

Due to the high amount of “crude fibre 19,00 %“ Vito has an excellent saturation. It is commonly said that laminitis can be caused by the high amounts of protein content found in pasture grass. It has since been proven scientifically that the high amounts of fructan found in grass, but also the high amounts of insulin in the blood, can bring laminitis on.

Fructans act as storage for carbohydrates in plants. Their deposits are steered through light, tempera-ture and humidity. Fructans ferment quickly which can cause the damaging laminitis in sensitive horses (see p.52).

Chronic high levels of insulin in the blood can result in an overprovision of light digestible carbohydrates or through large amounts of carbohydrates in the feed can result in the horse being overweight (adi-pose) with much too high levels of blood cholesterol counts(BCS).

Troubled horses should be fed preventatively or in acute cases, correctly!

Vets are diagnosing more often illnesses which are related to the disturbance of the metabolism and wrong nutrition i.e. insulin resistance,laminitis, PSSM (polysaccharide storage problem), Cushing’s syndrome, EMS (Equines metabolic syndrome) and azoturia. This is closely related to the amount of glycemic and insulinemic substances present in the feed and can trigger reactions.Veterinary treatment is essential when such illness-es occur!

Nutrition related laminitis, PSSM, Cushing syn-drome, EMS and azoturia can be avoided by not overfeeding „non structured“, and lightly digestible carbohydrates. Non-structured carbohydrates are starches and sugar components found in grains, fruits and grass (fructan). This can cause metabolic reactions when fed in large amounts, in horses prone to such dis-eases. In the veterinary medicine they recommend a feed intake based on fibres and structured carbohydrates („NDF“) in order to avoid such illnesses.

A warm blooded horse is called a Senior from an age of approximately 20 years old.

The special needs of an aged horse need to be taken into account in order to preserve the vitality, strength and zest for life well into a horses old age. Fussy eating, problems with chewing, lethargic digestion and a slower metabolism, skin disorders and prob-lems of coat changes are all typical ailments found in old age.This often results in loss of weight, reduction of muscle mass with longer periods of recovery and rest phases being essential.Due to the deterioration of the metabolism older horses need 20% to 25% more energy and protein than younger horses. This is why it is important to feed high quality protein sources such as linseed meal or brewer’s yeast. The vitamins- (particularly A, E, C and B-complex), a double amount of zinc- and selenium are needed. Calcium ( amounting from hay and supplementary feeds) shouldn’t be overfed. The ideal Ca:P-ratio lies at 1,5 - 2,5:1.It is imortant to make sure, by dental care, that the masticatory apparatus functions well. If necessary it is recommended to soak the feed ration.

Protein, obtained through feeding is digested in the intestine and broken down into amino acids and ab-sorbed into the circulation system. 20 amino acids are responsible for the building of protein. Protein is mainly used to provide building blocks for growth, muscle and bone development and repair of dam-aged tissue. The formulation is rich in nutritious ingredients. Champion feed is ideally suited and optimises your horses performance. In periods of intense compe-tition the horse must demonstrate concentration, strength, speed and endurance. Broodmares are often undernourished whilst only fed on rations of oats, hay and grass during the important final trimester of their pregnancy (from the 8th. month of pregnancy) and during the lactating phase. The essential amino acids such as leucine and lysine and other trace elements like copper, zinc and selenium are then not covered for.(See Info Centre).

Highly digestible hydrothermally macerated muesli flakes and Ω-3-fatty acid oils contained in Zucht-müsli cover the energy amounts needed by the mare. In addition to the 100 % absorbable L-lysine Zuchtmüsli contains other high quality protein com-ponenents (soya, brewer’s yeast) with high levels of leucine, methionine and other essential amino acids. These are responsible for the foetus development and for the production of milk proteins. The correct amounts added of calcium, phosphorus, copper, zinc and manganese, are important for the healthy de-velopment of joints and bones of the foal. Organic selenium (selenium yeast) improves vitality and the immune system of the unborn foal and later for the milk quality of the mare. Together with vitamin E and beta-carotine and selenium yeast, these help the seperation of the placenta and give protection for a future, healthy fertility. Also the colostrum quality is increased postively with the addition of zinc-, beta-carotine- and portions of vitamin A- and E .

marstall-tip: broodmares, which are poor eaters or are going to be covered during winter feeding, need a better beta-carotine- and amino acid supply . They should be fed Zuchtmüsli approx. 4 weeks prior to covereing and up to the 3rd week of pregnancy. Later they can be fed their usual concentrated feed.

A covering stallion is optimally fed with Zuchtmüsli supplying it with energy and protein, minerals and vitamins and trace elements. Essential amino acids such as lysine, methionine and cystine are also im-portant, in addition, selenium, beta-carotine, vitamin A and E improves the quality - and sperm count. Zuchtmüsli is of great importance for the radiance and condition of the horse and for a calm composure.

Especially when pasture feeding isn’t possible, then it is recommended to feed a broodmare, prior to cover-ing, with extra beta carotine and high quality protein (essential amno acids) during this time. After this pe-riod, the pregant mare doesn’t need an increased lev-el of nutrients right up to the 7th month of pregnancy, and an adapted feed is enough. From the 8th month onwards the foetus develops rapidly in the womb. Correct feeding is now essen-tial to guarantee the best possible development and growth of the foetus! In the womb the unborn foal now needs a high level of essential amino acids and enough selenium for a great start in life, also cop-per for the mare. The mare’s milk is relatively low in copper and during the last phase of the pregnancy the foetus will store copper in its liver so that it will be able to use these reserves once born. Copper is responsible for a healthy cartilage maturity. After the birth the lactating phase starts (the suck-ling phase). This is probably the most strenuos time for the mare. New studies have shown that the lactating phase reaches its peak middle of the 1st up to the end of the 2nd lactating month. It has been proven scientifically that the mare‘s milk is rich in essential amino acids, leucine (key to the foals growth) and Vitamin C. The supply of energy, amino acids (most importantly leucine & lysine), minerals, vitamins and trace elements are crucial for an ample milk production and for protecting the mare, so that her reserves don‘t become depleted over this time.

The mare’s milk doesn’t supply enough of the required amount of nutrients after the first month as a foal develops very quickly within the first few weeks. marstall Fohlen-Mix – The high quality concen-trate is made from essential amino acids (marstall ProAmin), skimmed milk powder and carefully balanced vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It is especially rich in copper and organic sele-nium. It can be used as a starter pellet or in com-bination with muesli, for rearing young horses.

The main period of growth takes place in the first 9-12 months (according to breed). After that the energy input should be reduced (Mack, 2007), however the need for a supply of high quality nutrients exists until the development has almost been completed at ap-proximately 3-3.5 years old..The supply of essential amino acids (marstall ProAmin) has proven to improve bone development, support steady growth and well-being and to lessen the strain on liver and kidneys as other more com-mon rations that are rich in protein (see Info Centre). The balanced supply of vitamins, minerals and trace elements supports a healthy skeletal and joint devel-opment and satisfies the requirements of growing horses.Fohlen-Mix is a high quality concentrate of all vital nutrients that a young horse needs in this phase of high performance. The palatable 4mm pellet that con-tains marstall ProAmin, skimmed milk powder, or-ganic selenium and a similar proportion of copper and zinc, acts as a supplement and provides all essential nutrients that the basic feed ration may not sufficiently contain. In the last few years, Marstall has supported and ac-companied various research projects of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at LMU in Munich. Hereafter the overfeeding of horses during growth, which has been widely discussed in Germany, has been found to be a theoretical problem. On the con-trary, in practice foals grow in accordance with the recommendations (GfE 1994) for restrictive breeding (Hois et al., 2005).However, the currently established energy recommen-dations (GfE 1994) are probably too high (Mack, 2006).

Horse owners are often prone to believe that protein for foals is harmful. But the amount of protein per day is much more important than the protein composition (content of essential amino acids)! The most recent study, supported by Marstall, shows that the targeted supply of specific essential amino acids (basic ele-ments of protein) have a significantly positive effect on growth and bone development. Furthermore the strain on liver and kidneys is lower than with feeds containing increased soya (Krumbiegel, 2011).The amino acid mix marstall ProAmin has been de-veloped after receiving these positive results.

Constant feeding of feed with a high glycemic in-dex (which increases blood sugar) and has a high content of starch and sugar, can lead to metabolic disorders caused by nutrition eg. insulin resistance. marstall Wiesen-Cobs from the region of Allgäu – taken from the luscious natural meadows, the cobs are gently dried in warm air. In a natural condition, dust-free, low in protein and rich in crude fibres. Low in fructan and molasses-free, ideally suited to older and sensitive horses.

The horse derives from the steppe animal, and by nature feeds on roughage. Its digestive system is designed for constant feeding of luscious grass. However, due to the increasing exploitation of grass-land, today’s grass often contains too much protein, not enough crude fibre and the variety of grasses is one-sided.Scientific research has shown that hay dried in warm air posesses less fructan than hay which has been dried by the sun (Hoedtke , 2010); probably due to the better temperature conditions, ideal for fructan decreasing enzymes.Warm air dried Wiesen-Cobs means that even dur-ing times of wet summer months, the harvest is hy-gienic and cleaner.

It is wrongly stated that laminitis can be caused by the high amounts of protein content found in pasture grass. It has since been proven scientifically that the high amounts of fructan found in grass, but also the high amounts of insulin in the blood after feeding high amounts of carbohydrates, can bring laminitis on.Fructans act as storage for carbohydrates in plants. Their deposits are steered through light, temperature and hu-midity. If fructans reach the colon as fermentable starch, they can effect the intestinal microbes of the horse. If large amounts reach the large intestine then the feared damag-ing laminitis can occur.

marstall ProCaval-Struktur – The so-called extru-sion process of the high-fibre components means that the straw’s protective paraffin-like wax layer becomes separated into fibres though pressure, warmth and moisture. The microbes in the colon can completely break down the secondary ingredients of the cells so that they can be utilised by the horse. ProCaval-Struktur largely consists of straw that has been separated into fibres. Extruded straw fibres bind water and help to stabilise the stomach and in-testinal environment. ProCaval-Struktur is there-fore suitable for horses with stool water problems.The extruded fibre-chips are light and bulky. The spe-cial structure triggers a kind of “chew-suck” mecha-nism in all horses which guarantees the necessary in-take of roughage, even by senior and problem horses. ProCaval-Struktur is ideal for hasty feeders. Just one or two handfulls mixed into the concentrated feed, considerably increases the chewing and feed time. The horses feel full and are contented and calm. Sport horses with not much time between competitions easily gain the necessary require-ments of crude fibre with ProCaval-Struktur. marstall Weidemüsli – Die Rezeptur zur spezi-ellen Regulierung der Herausforderungen bei Weidefütterung. Wirkt ausgleichend auf Wasser-haushalt, Mineralstoff- und Vitaminversorgung. Beugt Rohfasermangel vor und ermöglicht die unkomplizierte Angewöhnung.

Weidehaltung wird speziell im Freizeitbereich immer beliebter. Die Beweidung von Wiesenflächen gilt gemeinhin als pferdegerecht und wird als kosten-günstige, bequeme und komplette Sommerfütterung genützt. Dabei bringt besonders die Frühjahrsweide einige Risiken mit sich. Eiweissüberschuss, hoher Wasser-gehalt im Grundfutter, Mineralstoffknappheit, Calci-um-Defizit und Rohfasermangel bei gleichzeitigem Überschuss an den fettlöslichen Vitaminen A, D, E und K. Schnell kann junges Weidegras zu Verdauungs-störungen führen, die sich oft „nur“ durch Kotwasser oder Durchfall zeigen, aber immer mit einem mas-siven Verlust an lebenswichtigen Mineralstoffen ein-her gehen, die aber gerade bei Weidefütterung auch nur knapp verfügbar sind. Besonders das nachwachsende Gras mit wenig Strukturanteil enthält oft hohe Fruktanwerte (siehe auch Vito, S. 24) und birgt somit die Gefahr einer Hufrehe. Im Gegensatz dazu steht bei starker Beweidung kleiner Flächen oder bei geringem Graswuchs häu-fig nicht genügend Futter zur Verfügung, was einen Mangel an Nährstoffen mit sich bringt. Unbeachtet bleiben oft auch die nachlassenden Nährstoffgehalte zum Ende der Weidesaison.Wir, bei marstall, sprechen von einer Weide- oder Grünfütterung, wenn die „Grundfütterung“ zu zwei Dritteln oder vollständig aus Weidegras besteht.

Weidemüsli wirkt diesen Problemen mit der ganz speziellen Rezeptur regulierend entgegen. Wertvolle Komponenten, wie hydrothermisch aufgeschlossene Getreideflocken, Meeresalgen, Apfeltrester, Bier-hefe, Knoblauchgranulat, sowie weideergänzende Mineralstoffe und Spurenelemente, wie Calcium, Magnesium, Eisen, Kupfer, Zink und Selen sind in ausgewogener Mischung kombiniert. Das eiweißarme Weidemüsli reguliert den Wasser-haushalt und aktiviert den Stoffwechsel.Vor dm ersten Weideaustrieb empfehlen wir eine einwöchige Vorbereitungsfütterung, in der die Kraft-futterration kontinuierlich durch Weidemüsli ersetzt wird. Nach dem Weideaustrieb sollte Weidemüsli mindestens 4-6 Wochen in den Mengen der Vor-bereitungsfütterung weiter gefüttert werden, bis die Mikroorganismen im Verdauungstrakt an das Grün-futter gewohnt sind.

Brewer’s yeast assists the intestinal flora and delivers vita-min B and essential amino acids. Kieselguhr is a vital nutrient for connective tissue, hooves and skin. Gold-yellow linseed is responsible for healthy hair and a shiny coat. Ω-3 fatty acids act as a membrane protector, garlic supports the immune system and seaweed meal serves as an acidity regulator and organic activator, as well as the main source of nu-trients for organic minerals and vitamins with a high biological availability, such as calcium, magensium etc., trace elements such as manganese, zinc and copper. Also alfalfa chaff encourages chewing and the building up of saliva.

The high amounts of natural mixed herbs (i.e. milk thistle with the valuable flavonoid, silymarine, dan-dilion roots, nettle, hawthorn, etc.) are effective and supportive for the liver, urinary tract and cardiovas-cular system The organism of sensitive horses is relieved due to the low amounts being fed.

marstall Equine weighing scaleTo calculate the basis value for maintenance require-ments of energy and protein the weight of the horse has to be accurate. marstall offers an exclusive service “the mobile equine weighing scales”- weighing on location. It provides accurate information for equine feeding man-agement. Marstall offers this service for only 12 € per horse. We bring our equipment to you, on site to your stables, weigh the horse to find out the exact weight and afterwards calculate the perfect feeding ration. marstall Basic feed analysisThe quality of basic feed changes by every bought batch or new harvest. Varying degrees of nutrient amounts can cause fluctuations in the ration calculations. This can result in ineffective feeding. This is why it is es-sential to have the exact ratio amounts of the nutritional values. New research from Germany shows that such deworming treatments are becoming less ef-fective and the parasites more drug resistant. The diagnostic department of the Institute for Tropical Medicine and Parasitology at the Ludwig-Maximillians- University in Munich, Germany, is specialised in the Mc-Master Method of horse faeces examination and analy-sis, available for a low fee. After the results have been confirmed the veterinary doctor can decide exactly what treatment is needed when your horse is infested.
