DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

Little Shop of Horrors, with its blend of comedy, pathos, and gore is a unique musical. Based on a cheaply made 1960 Roger Corman drive-in feature (shot in two days using left over sets from a previous production), the musical lifts the original story beyond its shabby roots. With the addition of the Greek Chorus of Chiffon, Crystal and Ronnette, the musical is transformed into a rock version of the Faust myth. Seymour, the nebbish in the florist shop, sells his soul to win fame, fortune and the girl he loves.

I speak for my partner Donna Kummer in thanking the entire Marquette University Theatre Department for welcoming us and working so hard to produce the best theatre possible. There is a great sense of community here that makes the work particularly meaningful. It’s been our great pleasure to work with everyone involved in the production.

Thank you for joining us for the show and for supporting the arts on the Marquette campus.

Enjoy!

COSTUME DES IGN CONCEPT

SCENIC DES IGN CONCEPT

The realm of Little Shop of Horrors is surreal at best. The premise is fantastic, and the characteristics of the people in the play are heightened to say the least. I wanted to reflect this heightened reality in the scenery by seeking elements from the original Roger Corman film and finding the doses of reality that can be made slightly larger than life. It has been fun to be working on a play that is based on a B movie horror flick. My primary research involved watching the grainy Corman film, examining ele-ments that we could latch onto, borrow, and be inspired by. All the while we worked to keep the musical flowing; dropping moments of whimsy throughout the piece. I do hope you enjoy the show. We have had great fun bringing it to life.

Each character in Little Shop of Horrors has a very distinct and unique personality that is greatly exaggerated on stage. The show’s heightened sense of reality allowed for fun and quirky explorations into each of these characters. I chose to base most of my costume research on big personalities from the time when the play was writ-ten, including Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elvis Presley and Ann Margaret. Trendy girl groups like the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Crystals provided us with terrific inspiration for our girl group chorus. I hope you enjoy the show!
