4Beauty & The Beast: The Opera, Zémire et Azor

What a treat you’re in for.

This opera is a really unusual one. Originally performed in 1771 and written by Belgian composer André Grétry, Zémire et Azor (Zémire and Azor) is based on several versions of the Beauty and the Beast fairytale we all know and has been described by scholars as a comédie-ballet mêlée de chants et de danses. As far as I can tell, it was really designed

to be a crowd-pleaser—an accessible entertainment that all people—both high brow and low—could enjoy together.

But how would I define this show? Is it a comedy or a drama? Well…yes.

It is a quiet family drama, and it’s also a base and bawdy comedy. At times, it's a heartbreaking, unlikely love story, then an epic magical fantasy—and at certain points, a high stakes, scary thriller. Oh, and there’s also ballet dance, some special effects, magic tricks, and let’s not forget an intricate score by Grétry that is both quietly delicate and boldly vibrant.

That’s a lot of different things for one show to be. And in the production you are about to see, I added another ingredient into the mix: puppetry.

Puppetry is a major passion of mine and seemed like a natural fit for this magical fairy tale—but initially I was very concerned about incorporating this element. Could something as complicated as five actors wielding around an enormous, singing monster burst the seams of an already overstuffed show? How on earth could I get all of these elements to coalesce?

Well, I took solace in the scholarly description of this opera that you see above in bold. In particular, one word: Mêlée. But what does this word mean? Dictionary.com defines it well:

Mêlée (mɛleɪ): a noisy, messy, riotous fight or brawl.

I know what you must be asking—what possible confidence could I take in this show being called a noisy fight? Not a glowing review of the material, is it?

It means (at least to me) that all of the aforementioned disparate elements are brawling together to make a remarkable, beautiful, cacophonous mess—a lot like life. This show is a loud, vibrant collage of wonderful things: full of life and heart and magic and real feeling. So it’s not a comedy or a drama or anything but a little slice of jubilance to share.

Like the goat/reptile/bird/gorilla mash up that Azor himself is—this show is also a mixture of many different things that don’t naturally go together—and like with Azor—what makes all of those disparate things coalesce is the fact that they don’t. That’s the real magic of this mêlée.

So, let’s get this brawl started.

A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR – JAMES ORTIZ

5 Skylight Music Theatre 2016-2017 Season

Thoughts on the word “opéra-comique”

Contemporary audiences have a very different idea of a “comedy.” In the 19th century Italian opera world, a comic opera was based on every day characters that the audience could relate to, the best example being The Barber of Seville where, after much hilarity and shenanigans, the boy gets the girl. Although the French imitated certain

conventions of Italian opera, the genre of “opéra-comique” had a long development beginning in 1679 with Lully’s opera Isis, a tragedy in five acts, where the conquests of the King Louis XIV were celebrated. The tragedies slowly yielded to opera-ballets, a mixture of dance and song. This then evolved into the very French art form of “opera comique,” which has musical numbers interspersed with dialogue, dance and small orchestral interludes, a distant relation to the modern musical. One of the best examples of an opéra-comique is Carmen, which contemporary audiences would define as a tragedy. We could say that “opera comique” is a genre with lighter subject matter and relatable everyday problems.

Zémire et Azor (Beauty and the Beast) successfully premiered in 1771 in Fontainebleau and stayed in the French repertoire until 1821. It is reported that Mozart loved this opera. In 1771, Mozart was a 15-year-old traveling in Italy and could have seen the opera in Milan or Paris.

On a personal note, I find the music wonderfully reminiscent of an early Mozart opera and yet it has a French style of its own. One can recognize uncanny resemblances of germs of ideas that re-appear in Mozart’s great rescue opera The Magic Flute. One has to wonder if Grétry paid tribute to the father of French opera, Lully, in Beauty and the Beast (Zémire et Azor), composing a good-bye scene for the hero, Azor, at the end of the opera with a heroic introductory recitative, an interlude of wind (see James Ortiz’s puppet) and a touching final love scene between Zémire and Azor. I can speak for all the musicians when I say that we love this seldom heard opera, and are proud to be bringing it to life with James Ortiz’s brilliant vision for the Skylight audience!

10Beauty & The Beast: The Opera, Zémire et Azor

ACT ONEPrologue/OvertureA montage establishes the cycle of the traveling merchant Sander’s years of homecom-ings and goodbyes with his family.  Each time, Sander returns with more expensive gifts for his three daughters. Fatme and Lisbe accept greedily, while Zémire refuses these gifts. After several years, Zémire tells her father that all she would like him to bring her is a single rose. Sander promises her this present, and he and his servant Ali board their ship to again buy and sell his wares in distant countries. Sander’s ship sinks during a storm, and the two men are washed ashore in a foreign land. They travel through a forest until they arrive at the gate of a mysterious palace. They enter.

Scene OneAli wants to leave (The storm has passed), but Sander refuses to run away (No storm on Earth can frighten me). The spirits bring on a banquet table laden with food. Ali salutes their unseen host (There was never a spirit so fine!). When Sander picks a rose from the garden for Zémire, the beast Azor appears. He tells Sander that he must pay for stealing the rose. Sander explains it was taken out of love (How could a daughter ever know). Azor commands Sander to bring Zémire to him. (No matter where you are). A wind spirit carries Sander and Ali back home.

Scene TwoBack at the Sander estate, the three sisters sing a work song (The lark on high). Sander and Ali return and the girls are disappointed that his only present is the single rose for Zémire. She sings a song of hope to her family (Sweetest of roses, what do I see?). When Ali tells her about Azor’s threat, Zémire agrees to return to Azor’s palace (Then I shall go and tell the monster). Back on the island, Azor sings to his own reflection (Oh! What despair!)  Ali brings Zémire to the palace and runs off. When Zémire meets Azor, she faints at the sight of him.

INTERMISSION

ACT TWOScene OneThe stage is as we left it at the end of Act 1, except Zémire’s clothes have been magi-cally transformed to a richly made ball gown. Azor proves to be a kind host, (From the moment I saw you). Azor offers her anything she  desires and Zémire tells him, “Things don’t buy happiness.” Azor is touched by this and asks her to sing. She complies, singing La Fauvette, in French (Dawn is breaking, one bird is on the wing; Complete translation is in the Audience Guide).

Scene TwoAzor shows Zémire her family in the magic mirror and allows her to visit them so long as she promises to return. Zémire sees that her sisters remain unsatisfied and her father is in despair (Trio-Why did you leave me alone with this grief?). Zémire returns to Azor despite her family’s objections (Ah, I tremble at his destiny). Azor is in despair and near death, believing that Zémire has abandoned him (The sun sinks in the west). Zémire arrives and proclaims her love for him (Azor! Azor! No answer when I call you). Now that he has found love, the spell on Azor is lifted and he is transformed back into a prince. The whole com-pany sings of the enduring power of love (Ah love, Ah love!)
