Welcome to Olney Theatre Center’s summer musi-cal, Little Shop of Horrors!This is an exciting time for our theatre as we not only look toward celebrating our 75th Anniversary in 2013, but also reflect on the history of what Olney Theatre Center means to so many genera-tions. Little Shop of Horrors, a musical favorite, is the perfect summer show that brings our past and our future together – what better way to beat the

Maryland heat than with a singing man-eating plant?

We last produced Little Shop of Horrors in the summer of 1986 – and we are so happy to be able to bring it back a quarter of a decade later under the direction of an Olney favorite, Mark Waldrop (Annie, The Sound of Music). Mark’s production of The Sound of Music last winter was one of the most successful productions in Olney Theatre Center history.

If Roger Corman’s black comedy film, The Little Shop of Horrors, hadn’t been turned into a popular musical in 1982, it would be remembered for little more than a cameo by a young Jack Nicholson. but Oscar-winning composers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman saw something ripe and universal in the story of Seymour, a nerdy flower shop clerk whose apparent ticket out of Skid Row is a bloodthirsty talking plant, Audrey II. There’s one minor catch: the plant requires human victims. Or, as Seymour describes the plant’s food to an interviewer, “It’s a secret formula, but it’s not hard to come by.”

Today, the idea of a stage musical based on an unlikely or semi-obscure movie, even a Grade-b horror film, has become commonplace. In 1982, however, Little Shop of Horrors was something of a freak occurrence. People were not used to stage musicals based on somewhat disreputable old movies. but Menken and Ashman’s show had more than novelty appeal going for it. The songs were catchy and fun pastiches of early 1960s rock and soul, the staging incorporated clever puppeteering, and the whole production had a spirit of infectious anarchy which set it apart from its Off-broadway competition. Suffice it to say, the show was an immediate hit.

Like the original, the play is a satire of science fiction b-movies with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor. by emphasizing the Faustian sub-theme, Charles Griffith, the screen-writer, had loosely sketched into his script, Ashman’s adaptation takes on a more serious and emotional tone. In the original, the plant, though just as vocal, brings fame and fortune to the shop merely because of its existence. In the musical, however, the plant becomes a genuine character, a seductive Mephistophelian weed that pointedly spells out the riches it can bring to Seymour.

In the tradition of punishing all who let greed consume their more noble instincts, Little Shop of Horrors is a gory fairy tale without possibility for a happy ending. Look beneath the campy, cartoony implausibility, and you will find the dark realities that lie ahead for those who fully succumb to their desires and, doing so, check morality at the door.

The night I saw the original production of Little Shop of Horrors was one of the great theater-going nights of my life — and not just because it combined two of my favorite entertainment genres, musical comedy and b-movie horror. The performances were great, and Alan Menken’s tunes were catchy and period-perfect. but, for me, the hero of the evening was Howard Ashman, Little Shop’s lyricist, librettist, and original director. His wit and craft radiated through every aspect of his work and elevated the cheesy source material in a spectacular way. (When you hear “shang-a-lang” rhymed with “sturm and drang” in the opening number, you know you’re in the hands of a seriously smart and playful lyricist.) Perhaps Ashman’s most amazing achievement in Little Shop is how very funny and frightening and genuinely heartbreaking it can be — sometimes all at once. It’s my goal to give audiences here at Olney Theatre Center a production that captures the spirit of the show I fell in love with and delivers on all of its levels. I hope you enjoy it.

Howard Ashman (Book and Lyrics) wrote the lyrics for the Disney animated films The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast and Aladdin (three songs) and served as producer on The Little Mermaid and Executive Producer on Beauty and The Beast. With composer Alan Menken, he received two Academy Awards® and two Golden Globes® for best Song (“beauty and the beast” and “Under the Sea”) and four Grammy® Awards. He received an Academy Award® nomination with Mr. Menken for “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin. As Author, Lyricist and Director for the stage musical Little Shop of Horrors, which ran for five years in New york and has been produced worldwide, Mr. Ashman received two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a New york Drama Critics Circle Award, a London Evening Standard Award and a Drama Desk Award. For his screenplay version of Little Shop of Horrors, Mr. Ashman received a nomination from the Screen Writers Guild, and “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space” was nominated (with Mr. Menken) for an Academy Award® for best Song. He was Author, Lyricist and Director of Smile for which he received a Tony® nomination for best book. His other credits include: God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater; The Confirmation (his only full-length play); Artistic Director: WPA Theatre (1976-1982). born on May 17, 1950 in baltimore, Mr. Ashman died at age 40 of complications due to AIDS on March 14, 1991 in New york City.

ross scott rawlings (Musical Director/Conductor) was last seen at Olney Theatre Center in the early nineties. DC Area credits include: Rep Stage and Toby’s-The Dinner Theatre of Columbia. A veteran of the road, he has traveled the world with over twenty two musical tours such as: Damn Yankees, Show Boat, Cabaret, fosse (starring: ben Vereen, Ruthie Henshall, and several U.K. stars); Sweet Charity (starring: Molly Ringwald, and later Paige Davis); Little Women (starring: Maureen McGovern); and most recently has toured with Hairspray. In the summer of 2009, he Musically Directed/Conducted Hairspray for the MUNy stage in St. Louis starring: Paul Vogt, in which he received a Kevin Kline Award for Outstanding Music Direction. He also traveled to Charlottetown, PEI Canada doing another production of Hairspray (starring: George Wendt). An accomplished pianist, arranger/orchestrator and conductor, he holds over three hundred professional credits since the age of fifteen. Mr. Rawlings resides in Columbia, Maryland where he serves as Director of Vocal Music and Piano at Glenelg High School.

James Fouchard (Set Design) previously created sets for Olney Theatre Center’s productions of The Sound of Music, Dames At Sea and oh, Coward!. Other design credits include the national tours of Can-Can (starring Chita Rivera), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (starring Patrick Cassidy), The Show-off (starring Jean Stapleton), 42nd Street (Asia Tour), Thoroughly Modern Millie, phantom, Little Shop of Horrors, South pacific, Sound of Music (USA and Asia), Crazy for You, Grease!, oklahoma!, Singin’ in The Rain and the Charleston production of porgy and Bess. He has also served as Scenic Supervisor for tours of Will Rogers follies, Smokey Joe’s Cafe and evita (supervised by Harold Prince). Other designs include productions for Papermill Playhouse, Pittsburgh CLO, American Musical Theater, Ford’s Theater, Walnut Street Theater, The Kennedy Center, Peabody Conservatory, Syracuse Stage, Everyman Theatre, Theatre of the Stars, Rep Stage, OperaDelaware, Summer Opera Theater, Opera Columbus, Feld Entertainment, and Harrah’s (Atlantic City and Lake Tahoe). charlie Morrison (Lighting Design) Charlie Morrison’s lighting for theatre, national and inter-national tours, architecture and events, has been seen worldwide on four continents and in every state in the U.S. National and International tours include: Groovaloo (NyC and LA); Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; Aida (U.S. and China); The 25th Annual putnam County Spelling Bee; Gypsy; 42nd Street (U.S. and Japan); Miss Saigon; Smokey Joe’s Café; The Who’s Tommy (Japan and Europe); Titanic; The Music Man — and many others. Charlie has worked at many of the nation’s regional theatres including Papermill Playhouse, Shakespeare Theatre Company (DC), Goodspeed Musicals, Olney Theatre Center, Playmaker’s Rep, and many others. Charlie is the recipient of the 2006 and 2007 Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Lighting Design, and has been nominated for seven Helen Hayes Awards over the past four years. Jeffrey dorfman (Sound Design) is a freelance Sound Designer based in Washington, D.C. With more than 10 years of experience in music performance, he has studied theatre at SUNy buffalo and University of Maryland, College Park. Winner of a 2009 KCACTF Region 2 Award for Excellence in Sound Design, Jeff utilizes his background in music performance, composition, and theatre arts in order to immerse the audience in worlds of imagination. Renee began her stage management career in Olney Theatre Center’s Internship Program as a stage management intern. She is currently the Production Manager for Olney Theatre Center. eric Brooks (puppeteer, Audrey ii) is ever inspired by constantly changing forms of Life and hopes to unify higher grounds of understanding and perception for the creative table. He is an alumni of both The Eugene O’Neill Puppetry Conference and the University of Connecticut’s Graduate Puppet Arts Program. Martin Platt (Artistic Director) Mr. Platt is a native of beverly Hills, California and attended Carnegie-Mellon University (CMU). After graduating from CMU, Mr. Platt founded the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF), where he served as Artistic Director for eighteen years.

After leaving ASF, Mr. Platt served two years as General Director of birmingham Opera Theatre, where he directed productions of Puccini’s Tosca and Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio. His other opera work has included productions of Daughter of the Regiment, La Traviata, the US premiere of Verdi’s Stiffelio, and the bizet/Constant/brook La Tragedie de Carmen.

Mr. Platt later served as Artistic Director of the New Mexico Repertory Theatre and founded Santa Fe Stages, an international performance festival in Santa Fe.

In London, Mr. Platt has directed The free State by and starring Janet Suzman, Lady Day at emerson’s Bar and Grill, and Miss evers’ Boys. In Spain, he directed el flameco es Vida and Don Juan flamenco for the bienale de Flamenco in Sevilla. In Vienna, he has directed John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt and Donald Marguiles’ Time Stands Still.
