Italian white marble is one of the most popular countertop and backsplash choices in kitchens today. Many varieties of white marble come from the same region in Italy. All classic white Italian marble comes from the Carrara region, located on the coast of Northern Tuscany. White marble has been quarried in these peaks since the time of the Roman Empire. There are many quarries in this area but the three main types are Bianco Carrara, Statuary White, and Calcutta, all of which are graded for attributes like the whiteness of the background and the color and movement of the veins—similar to the way diamonds are graded for color, clarity and cut. Like diamonds, the higher the grade of white marble, the higher the price. Each marble type has its own special qualities, and the simplest way to tell these materials apart is to use the “Background and Vein Color” rule.
