Reflective Essay 1
English Language Teaching 1
May 22, 2011
The article main topic is about inheritance language and troubles in native speakers and
language expertise. We know that languages are acquired in the social environment, M.B.H
Rampton define at least five things in the idea of being the native speaker of a language andhaving it as your mother tongue which are:
1. - A particular language is inherited, either through genetic endowment or through
birth into the social group stereotypically associated with it.
2. - Inheriting a language means being able to speak it well.
3. - People either are or are not native/mother-tongue speakers.
4. - Being a native speaker involves the comprehensive grasp of a language.
5.-Just as people are usually citizens of one country, people are native speakers of onemother tongue(1990.p.97).
By these five things we can see the capacity that humans have when we refer to language it
doesnt matter if its your native language or not but we born with the capacity to
communicate anyway. As people participate in many groups (the family, the peer
group, and groups defined by class, region, age, ethnicity, gender, etc.): membership
changes over time and so does language. Being born into a group does not mean that
you automatically speak its language well - many native speakers of English cant
write or tell stories, while many non-native speakers can.(M.B.H Rampton 1990. P.98)
Otherwise exist a lot of countries which are multi-lingual and people need to communicate
in both languages, so native language just identify you as the language that you speak first
from your parents. Language expertise is when you perform your language as an expertrather than as only native speaker in the article M.B.H Rampton consider five advantagesfrom being expertise in a field which are:
1. -Although they often do, experts do not have to feel close to what they know a lot
about. Expertise is different from identification.
2. -Expertise is learned, not fixed or innate.
3. -Expertise is relative. One persons expert is another persons fool.
4. -Expertise is partial. People can be expert in several fields, but they are never
omniscient.
5. -To achieve expertise, one goes through processes of certification, in
Which one is judged by other people. Their standards of assessment
Can be reviewed and disputed. There is also a healthy tradition ofchallenging experts(1990. P.99).
This article tried to make a reflect about sociolinguistic problems and native speakers
because its important to know the links between people and language as a linguistics.
World population its every time more spread around the entire world this cause thatlearning and acquisition of other languages are more required by social and professional
settings, so by performing English even ifits not our native language we can assume moreopportunities in any field that we want to contribute.
