BAKING TIPS

If you want to add dried fruit or nuts to your bread dough, the mixing ratio is

1:9 or one part nuts and fruits and nine parts dough. In that way, every slice has

the right amount of crunch and taste.

The best place for dough to rise is a draught-free oven or microwave.

Season your coffee bread dough with bitter orange and orange peel.

You can always prepare your coffee bread halfway: braid loaves or shape dough into balls, let rise partly and place in freezer.

Before your surprise guests arrive, defrost the coffee bread, let rise fully and bake.

Star anise, cinnamon sticks, and rosemary twigs are the perfect decoration for tables

and baked delights – the right mix of fragrance and looks.

Spice your gingerbread dough up by mixing rye flour with wheat flour.

FRUIT BREAD

2 LOAVES

4 dl buttermilk or natural yoghurt1 dl water

50 g brewer’s yeast0.5 dl syrup

2 tsp bitter orange peel 1 tsp salt

1.5 dl finely chopped dried fruits 3 dl rye flour

8 dl wheat flour0.5 dl cooking oil

Crumble the brewer’s yeast with your hands and mix it with warm water.

Add buttermilk or natural yoghurt, syrup, bitter orange peel, salt, dried fruit and rye flour. Gradually add the wheat flour and oil and knead the dough until soft. Let the dough rise under a light cloth

or towel for 30 minutes.

Shape the dough into two loaves and let rise for about 60 minutes.

Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for about 40 minutes.

Fandango is part of Maija Isola’s Barokki pattern series, which was inspired by decorative motifs from the baroque period. Maija reworked the baroque style in her own image: simple, clear, modern.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF

I was raised to appreciate culture, art and literature. So it’s no wonder I work in a creative profession. When I was 11 years old, I decided that I would become a fashion designer. Now I’m living out my childhood dream.

In my work, I am determined and precise. I focus on form, detail and finishing. I love to design clothes for everyday use. Something you can use year in, year out.

I like working in groups, where you can share ideas and inspiration. In my opinion, the best results are born from cooperation.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN

WORKING WITH MARIMEKKO?

Three years plus. I began working as a freelance designer for Marimekko soon after I graduated from Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

WHAT HAVE YOU DES IGNED FOR

THIS WINTER ’S COLLECTION?

I’ve renewed Marimekko’s classic bathrobe. Now there are separate versions for both men and women. The material is also softer and lighter than before, and every detail is more refined than ever.

I’ve also designed a series of jersey styles in Aino-Maija Metsola’s beautiful Ketunkolo (fox hole) pattern. The material is wonderfully firm, and contrasts nicely with the playful animals and plants in Aino-Maija’s pattern. These clothes are perfect for work and fun. Last Christmas, I wore a sample of the looser-fitting dress in the series with high heels and my grandmother’s old jewellery. I felt incredibly comfortable and festive at the same time.

Around the turn of the year, my new Unikko sweatshirt designs will be included in the collection. The first one is a traditional sweatshirt, while the other is a looser, dress-length model. I worked with Unikko on a bigger scale, because I wanted the fabric cut to disrupt the pattern. I felt that this was a great way to celebrate Unikko’s iconic status. You don’t have to see the entire pattern to know it’s Unikko.

WHAT IS YOUR RECIPE FOR

MEMORABLE HOLIDAYS?

My recipe? Being together with my big family, sitting down to a long and delicious dinner, and listening to

festive music played on a music box. I also enjoy the smell of real Christmas trees, the flicker of candle lights, and the peaceful feeling that comes with slowly fading daylight.

To make my recipe complete, I would include one of my family’s favourite holiday traditions: my father’s annual quest to find Santa Claus. Of course, Father Christmas always shows up at our doorstep with gifts, while my father is out looking for him. When my father returns from his quest, we tell him that he has missed Santa yet again. My father would then accept our lavish apologies that we had not asked Santa to stay longer. We’ve always celebrated this tradition – even when there have been no small children in the family.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR

FONDEST MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS?

I have so many fond childhood memories of Christmas. But here I’d like to share a memory from last year, when my fiancé and I bought our first Christmas tree together. We carried it home from the marketplace and decorated it with lights and balls. It put us in the holiday mood and celebrated the beginning of our own Christmas tradition.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS DISH?

One of my grandmothers was from Åland – a chain of islands between Finland and Sweden – and the other from Russia. So our Christmas dinners are a bit like Marimekko’s aesthetic: a tasty blend of Nordic and Slavic inspiration.

I especially love the different starters we serve at Christmas. There’s gravadlax, whitefish and salmon, skagenröra (Swedish shrimp salad), home-made pâté, beetroot salad with herring, mom’s own Italian salad, roe, onions, and pickles with sour cream…sometimes I eat starters even after dessert.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE DOING DURING THE

HOLIDAY SEASON?

Put on my wool socks and curl up under a blanket with a glass of mulled wine in one hand – all ready to enjoy the books I got for Christmas.

In the spring, we organised a promotion for customers in Marimekko stores around the world as part of our Unikko (poppy)

50th anniversary celebration. The grand prize was a weekend trip to Helsinki for two. Twelve lucky winners and their travel

companions – from Australia, Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, the USA, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland – spent a long weekend with us at the end of August, touring our printing factory and meeting some of our designers.
