*AIDSHuman Immunodeficiency Virus

(HIV) is a small, slowly replicating retrovirus that leads to AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency virus)

HIV affects the body’s Helper T cells

Causes a weakened immune response that allows for opportunistic infections and cancers

HIV is spread by contact of bodily fluids including: syringe sharing, sexual contact, blood infusions, and the consumption of breast milk

AIDS was first documented in 1981 in the US although the origins are believed to be in primates in west-central Africa

Worldwide, there were about 2.5 million new cases of HIV in 2011

About 34.2 million people are living with HIV around the world

In 2010, there were about 1.8 million deaths in persons with AIDS, and nearly 30 million people with AIDS have died worldwide since the epidemic began
