Taking a Lenten Drive

On a regular basis I get into my car and drive somewhere either

for work or pleasure. After years of driving, I really don’t give the

matter a great deal of thought. I just do it. There is, of course,

more to it than that.

My car has to be in running order and properly fueled.

As I drive I look ahead to see where I am going. I look, not just

over the hood of the car to see what is immediately ahead of me,

but several seconds down the road to see what I will encounter

shortly.

I look into the rearview or side mirrors to see what is behind me. In

addition to seeing where I have been, I can be prepared in case

anyone is following too closely or if an emergency vehicle ap-

proaches.

To insure that I can change lanes safely, I look into blind spots to

make sure that no other vehicle is there.

If my destination is a place I am unfamiliar with, I will pull up the

location on my maps app and study the route so that I will not get

lost.

Time after time, I do this without ever really giving much thought

to our faith journeys. We just live. But, as the automobile meta-

phor teaches us, there is much more to it than that.

We need to make sure that our spirits are properly fueled. We

need to take responsibility for our faith. It’s not someone else’s job

to make sure we are properly equipped. Through prayer, scrip-

ture, reflection, and communion with God and God’s people, we

are spiritually equipped and in good working order.

We need to look forward down the road that we are traveling—

not just at what is immediately in front of us but what is further

down the road.

We need to look back to see where we have been. We can learn

much from our past. If we are headed to a destination, we cannot

stay where we are. Going back won’t get us to our destination

either.

Most of us have blind spots—both as individuals and as

Churches—we need to take care that in our journey we do not

foolishly crash into others because we were reckless in how we

handle ourselves.

And, since our journey of faith has many twists and turns, we need

to be properly equipped with directions. Most of us think only of

the scriptures, but as one of my former professors used to love to

say, “All truth is God’s truth.” We can learn from other sources.

Our Methodist heritage tells us that, while scripture is our primary source for the

formation of our faith, God has given us the gifts of reason, tradition and experi-

ence to assist us in our journey.

Beginning this Wednesday, March 5, on Ash Wednesday, we will take a Lenten

journey. It will be a time for us to ponder where we have been, look forward to

see what is before us, look around to explore our blind spots and seek God’s

guidance to help us make the journey and that the vehicle of our church and it’s

faith is in good working order. I invite us to come together as a church family to

take this journey together. A journey that will lead us to Easter and a new begin-

ning as a church.

plastic eggs and candy for the children’s Easter Egg

Hunt. Please place the items in the boxes located by

elevator on the First and Second Floor.

Stop Look Listen

Lent, the season of the church year that’s associated with repent-

ance, begins on Ash Wednesday (March 5 this year). While some

people deny themselves by giving up something for Lent, others

prepare for Easter through special Bible studies or devotions.

Christians observe Lent for these reasons:

It causes us to STOP. Lent says, “Stop and rest awhile,” as

well as “Stop doing wrong.”

It tells us to LOOK. Look inward for an honest self-

examination. Look upward to see the cross of Christ offering

healing and love. Look forward to the hope of the Resurrection.

It tells us to LISTEN. Listen to the words of Christ. Listen to the

voice of God. Listen to the winds of the Spirit of God.

Stop, Look, and Listen. These three words aren’t only important for

our safety in travel; they’re also helpful for our journey through the

40 days of Lent.

Church Council Meeting Minutes January 20, 2014

Jim

Coots opened the meeting in prayer. Donna Meador led a devotional taken from The Upper Room. After reading Mark 14:3-9, she spoke about how well-meaning church members steer newer members in other directions or criticize lesser contributions. She added that this is good to think about here as we represent many different teams. She next shared 1 Corinthians 12:14-31 which talks about how we are different parts but one body. Each part is where God wants it and all of us together are the body of Christ, each with different gifts. She talked about using ingredients to make chocolate chip cookies...how just because a single ingredient alone does not taste good you can not leave it out of the batch. Like the cookies, we are God’s ingredients. Donna then closed with a couple of quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr.; one of which was that faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase. Donna then started a time of LOVING around the room in which prayer concerns specifically for council members were shared. Prayer requests included school, guidance and patience, health concerns, pending surgeries, exercising our faith, and Winter Blitz. Praises included good doctor reports, new members on the council, and the success of the winter coat drive. Donna closed the time in prayer and we will continue to lift each other up. Donna then asked that the minutes of the November 18, 2013 meeting be approved. Trisha Hobbs noted that she needed to make a correction to the Christmas Offering to correctly show the three-way split. Larry Crouch made a motion that the minutes be ac-cepted with this correction. Jim Donna next asked that we address the Consent Agenda Reports. She explained for the new council member what we highlight in the Consent Agenda reports. Reports from Children’s Ministries and Trustees were available in the room as they were not in the original sent report. David Pratt gave a correction to the Send/Missions report stating that the children raised over $200 for Heif-er International instead of the $100 printed in the report. He noted that the Community Garden will be a church-wide effort next year and that it is good to see these programs grow. David Pratt made a motion that the Consent Agenda Reports be accepted with the Heifer International correction. Clyde Tharp seconded the motion and the Consent Agenda Reports were accepted. Donna next had the pulled items from the Consent Agenda addressed. Matt Bell spoke first on the possible Exploratory Mission Trip. Since he has arrived, he has tried to hold a cycle of summer mission trips for our youth. The first year is to an urban city, next is a rural city, then a local trip, and finally an international trip. The first was with Mission Discovery in Nashville, next was with Appalachian Service Project in Breathitt County, this coming summer will be in Louisville, and in the summer of 2015 we would like to take about 25 people to the Dominican Republic for 10 days with GO Min-istries. Matt is seeking permission to take an exploratory trip from February 24th to 28th before signing a contract for the summer

2015 trip. He would go through customs and the same airports see all the sights and sounds, stay in the same locations, and check out the area. The money ($1600) would come from the youth budget or youth savings account initially and if we sign a contract the cost would be dispersed over those going on the summer trip. Larry Crouch made a recommendation that we authorize the exploratory trip. Bill Tuttle seconded this and the recommendation was approved. Jim Coots spoke next on the Building Fund. We are in the third year of our 3-year campaign and we are not where we wanted to be with the fund. Donald Durden stated that the current balance is $ 388,704. The building and capital campaign committee will meet and hold discussions with others to bring a recommendation to the council as to what options to present to the congregation to be done with the fund. The committee has had some attrition and would like to add a couple interested people before meeting.

Clyde Tharp spoke next for the Finance Committee. The Sunday bulletin this week will have a thank you for the response from the congregation to the fall plea. There were four categories of responses. Some continued at the same level of giving, others caught up on their pledges, others added what they could, and some made significant donations toward the deficit. In October we were $ 51,000 behind and at year-end we were only $ 30,000 behind so we closed the gap. As we are beginning the new budget year we are still looking at a $ 53,000 deficit, which we can cover from reserves. Donald Durden added that he has seen no sig-

nificant change in giving so far in January.

Buddy Bowles spoke next from the Trustees Committee. While being frugal over the years, the best care hasn't been taken with the building. The west wall is unsafe; with mortar gone and a bulge in the wall. It was pointed out that the south wall and west wall are both mostly from the original 1898 building. The Trustees have a bid for $80K and are making a recommendation that the Church Council approve moving forward to have Thoroughbred repair the west wall due to safety concerns. This motion was seconded by Bill Tuttle and the motion was approved. It was noted that we may need to call a special Church Council meeting or Church/Charge Conference for an indebtedness vote once the Trustees and Finance Committees have a chance to determine fund-ing options. Buddy added that going forward; the Trustees Committee will be surveying the whole church property, possibly quar-

terly, to determine what else needs to be done.

Bill Tuttle spoke next from Staff-Parish Relations (SPR). They are still in the process of developing the job description and title for

the Children’s Ministries staff position. They hope to start soliciting for applicants next month.

Donna Meador stated that there would be a Safe Sanctuary training class held on February 9th.

There was no Pastor’s Report. Larry Crouch had nothing to report as Lay Delegate.

There was no other new business.

The next meeting is February 17th.

Kay Burney then closed the meeting in prayer and Donna Meador adjourned the meeting at 8:03 p.m.

Mission Outreach

In his book 7 Truths From Experiencing God, Henry Blackaby writes “When you recognize where God is working, you can join him

in what he is doing.” Also in the past few weeks Pastor Willard has encouraged us to be about doing Jesus things in Jesus places. In

missions these two concepts are very true as we look at the many opportunities to serve our neighbors in the community and beyond.

The Mission Team will continue to provide you information this year on mission ministry opportunities where you can serve, pray

for, or support with resources. Listed below are a few of the outreach ministries needing your support. This is not a complete list of

ministries. If you know of other opportunities, the Mission Team would like to add them to this list.

Community Garden:

This year the goal is to double last year‘s result of donating almost 1000 lbs of fresh vegetables to help feed members of our commu-

nity. As the goal is doubled so is the need for volunteers of all ages. Matt Bell and Larry McCarthy

have stepped up as co-leaders, but other adults are needed to help with this ministry. The youth will handle securing the seeds/slips

and planting, but help is needed for maintaining and harvesting the garden. If you, Sunday school class, or small group has an inter-

est in this; please contact Matt Bell or Larry McCarthy.

Children Ministry: This year the children’s mission/service project is collecting cans for the Backpack Program. Each Wednesday

night the children are bringing in a pop-top can of Campbell’s Soup. Wouldn’t it be great if on each Wednesday night the adults

attending the meal or study group also brought a can of soup to show their support to the children on this outreach?

United Methodist Children’s Home, Versailles: In addition to the Fifth Sunday Offering on March 30 we will be embarking on a

new outreach to the Home. The United Methodist Women have been going to the Home prior to the fifth Sunday to assist with mail-

ings to churches. The UMW and Mission Team are joining together to expand this service. This day of service will be open to all

as we will also be doing service projects at the Home. The UMW will host this event with the Mission Team providing transporta-

tion each month with five Sundays. The date for March is not set at this time, but will be listed in the Monday email update. For

more information contact Linda Sanford or David Pratt.

Kids Korner: The next scheduled Kids Korner ministry to the children of our community is scheduled for 10:00-12:00 noon on

March 15. Volunteers are needed for all areas of the ministry: bus drivers and riders, teachers, cooks, servers and cleanup. If you

can volunteer please contact Donna Meador or Renee Clark.

God’s Kitchen: March 27 is the next scheduled date for Centenary to serve lunch. We will meet in Centenary’s kitchen at 10:00 to

prepare the meal then move the Victory Baptist Church on Main Street to serve the meal at 11:30. Volunteers are always welcome at

either one or both location to assist in this ministry. Please contact Sydney Lawson or Larry Crouch.

Impact Shelby: Clyde Tharp is again coordinating this ministry. This year the seven United Methodist Churches of Shelby County

will come together on April 19 for this time of sharing and ministry to our community. Projects are still needed for this event, if you

know of someone in need of assistance please contact Larry Crouch, Barry Sanford, or David Pratt.

Ramp Ministry: We currently have two ramp requests approved and will be constructed this spring. One is for a man around the age

of 50 and has had MS for the past 10 years. This will be a replacement ramp as the one he is using is rotten and in need of replace-

ment. The other is for a church member in a wheelchair and needs assistance with getting to his enclosed porch. If you would like to

be a part of this ministry please contact David Pratt, Barry Sanford, or Larry Crouch.
