LCC President Tim Hetzner Reports on His Tour ofTornado Damaged Region

In the middle of disasters the Mercy and Compassion,Presence and Proclamation of Christ shines! I justreturned from assessing the damage done by thetornadoes in Southern Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky.SOME of the towns I spent time in were HarrisburgIllinois, Marysville, Indiana and Henryville, Indiana. Thetouchdown of four twisters in Kentucky was the worstin the region in 224 years. In Indiana, an EF-4 tornado- the second-highest on the Fujita scale that measurestornadic force - packing 175 mph winds hit the town ofHenryville and stayed on the ground for more than 50miles! I could go on and on about the tornadoes - butwhat is important is what is happening BECAUSE ofthe tornadoes.

I met with different churches and pastors - among those (Rev. James Rivett, Rev. BruceKischnick, Rev. Matthew Woods, Rev Charles Fausel, Tricia Major, Doug Netherton,President May of the Indiana District, Rev. Glenn Merritt and Rev. EdwardGrimenstein of LCMS Disaster Relief and Al Dowbnia of LCMSCommunications). I met with families affected directly or indirectly by the tornadoes -however the bottom line was that everyone was affected!! What did I see? An incredibleopportunity for Mercy and Compassion Ministry to take place - all with the Presence andProclamation of Jesus Christ! Everyone is asking - "What can we do?" First - understand that things are still beingsorted out on how best to help. MOST placesare NOT taking physical donations right now -as they have been overwhelmed with things.Down the line - yes aid will be needed, but forthe time being they have what is needed. Pray- prayer for the families and loved ones wholost someone in the storm. Pray for theworkers who are working to restore power inthe area. And for the rescue workers who aredoing an arduous and tiring job. Financial helpis the most useful now to the churches that are serving the families. I distributed moneyto three different churches to assist families. We will distribute more as funds come in.Dollar for dollar your gift goes to helping in this way! Thank you for your support!! LCC Looks to Acquire Printer/Copier to MeetGrowing Demand

The many ministries of Lutheran ChurchCharities require a substantial volume ofprinted material. Our ministry growth hasmade it necessary to get a printer/copier tomeet demand. Recently LCC took on theprinting of all our LERT manuals previouslysupplied by the LCMS. As one of the mostactive districts in the synod when it comes toLutheran Early Response Team training it'simportant to have a reliable copy machine toproduce manuals. And that is just one of themany things we print. However, the cost ofthe high volume copier being consideredwould draw significantly from our operatingfunds. Please consider a gift to help us with

the purchase of the Konica Minolta C552 Bizhub printer/copier that will meet our needs.Thank you for your generous support of Lutheran Church Charities. Click here to donate for printer/copier

Join Tim Hetzner for a Reformation Heritage andAdvent Christkindl Markets Tour

The tradition of the Advent Markets inGermany and Europe reaches back into theMiddle Ages, when the December fairs were atime to stock up on provisions for the longwinter months ahead. Today they provide amagical stage to share in the festive spirit of atraditional Christmas celebration - handcraftedcribs and hand carved decorations, mulledwine, Christmas gingerbread and roastingchestnuts all help contribute to the festivemood. Literally translated, the street fairs areChrist-child markets - all with an

Advent Theme. I would like you to join me and be amazed at the ultimate Christmas fantasy come true -of lights and trees, ornaments and snow and everything to prepare you for Christmas -without the commercialization of Christmas we have in the US. Add to the Christ-child markets the main sites of the Reformation and Luther onChristmas. Have you ever said to yourself, "If I had been in Bethlehem the firstChristmas, things would have been different. I would have..." I found the followingexcerpt from Martin Luther's Christmas Book very challenging:

"There are many of you in this congregation who think to yourselves: "If only I hadbeen there! How quick I would have been to help the Baby! I would have washedHis linen. How happy I would have been to go with the shepherds to see the Lordlying in the manger!" Yes, you would! You say that because you know how greatChrist is, but if you had been there at that time you would have done no betterthan the people of Bethlehem. Childish and silly thoughts are these! Why don't youdo it now! You have Christ in your neighbor. You ought to serve him, for what youdo to your neighbor in need you do to the Lord Christ Himself."

Martin Luther was right. We know he is right because Christmas present is no differentthan Christmas past. The only way we can say things might have been different that firstChristmas is by making our present Christmas different. The words of Christ in Matt. 23:31-36 and the exhortation of John in I John 3:16, 17challenge me and ought to challenge us as we consider the love of Christ demonstratedto us and our need to demonstrate that love of Christ to others. How different will thisChristmas be for you? I invite you to join me in a trip which will be remembered for many years to come; to aplace where magic's in the air.

Tim's Pick of the Week

Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness, UpdatedEditionby Andrew Murray

When Jesus "made himself nothing ... taking the nature of aservant," He modeled for all believers true humility. Murray callsthis "our true nobility" and "the distinguishing feature ofdiscipleship." In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray

journeys through Scripture and Christ's life, underscoring the utmost need for humility---as opposed to pride---in the Christian's life. With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murraycalls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character ofChrist to be filled with His grace. Often called the best work on humility ever written, thisedition has been edited for today's reader.
