    PASTORS PEACE

    Baptized With New Life

Jesus said, "Consider how the lilies grow. They do notlabor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all hissplendor was dressed like one of these." Luke 12:27

When I think of Easter I think of lilies. They typi-cally bloom April through June and their fragrance is asweet perfume that (if you are allergy free) fills to the heartand soul of the one breathing deeply of its bloom. Thelilies that fill many chancel areas and sanctuaries are avibrant white which spreads like the bell of a trumpet. Itsvelvet flower opens to expose the stamen sun, drippingsparkling pollen that almost demands attention.

This beautiful white flower can remind us of the"Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting" on Je-sus as he emerged from the Jordan. "And a voice fromheaven said, ‘This is my Son, Whom I love; with him I amwell pleased.’ " Matthew 3:16b-17. Jesus received thebaptism of repentance, which invites each one of us to'change our minds', to 'turn around' from our old way of lifeand experience a new life within the blessing of the univer-sal church. Jesus didn't need  the baptism of repentancebut did it for our sake, as he took on our form for our sake.

The glory of God shines in our hearts as we aretransformed by God's love and forgiveness, the lilies trum-peting joy to our senses as we reflect upon what this allcan mean in our lives...

New life happens every day as we embrace it.Christ's resurrection proclaims an end to death that wecan only fathom in the cleansing of baptism, imagining be-ing buried with Christ and born anew in Christ's resurrec-tion.

Yet we are reminded of the absolute horror of

Good Friday which must happen first, as it is the end, thefinality of sacrifice. And we remember this only by movingahead each moment of each day in forgiveness, by build-ing bridges of peace, and by sharing God's Love with oneanother.

One Great Hour of Sharing®is the Lenten Offering of theUnited Church of Christ thatsupports disaster, refugee, and development actions. The offering date for the OneGreat Hour of Sharing offeringin 2016 is March 6th.

Walk The Extra MileIn a world where communities are being dis-placed by the catastrophes of war, famine, andnatural disasters, the Church is called to reclaim thespiritual discipline of solidarity. Christians are sum-moned to adopt and live out a "theology of accom-paniment," in the words of the theologian RobertoGoizueta. As natural, economic, and political forcesdisrupt and uproot communities, the Church iscalled to stand in solidarity with those who seek tomove beyond the trauma of displacement toward apromise of healing and peace.

The story of Ruth is ultimately about thissolidarity. Naomi and Ruth were very much like to-day's refugees: they never chose to move fromcountry to country, rather, it was imposed uponthem by forces beyond their control. Yet when thatsystem failed them, Ruth chose solidarity withNaomi over despair, and accompanies her mother-in-law to pursue a livelihood for both of them.

Ruth's promise to Naomi defines what soli-darity authentically entails, and it stands as a chal-lenge for Christians today to walk with refugees asthey build new homes in strange lands.

Through the One Great Hour of Sharing of-fering, we, as the body of Christ, have opportunityand power to help those who are living in despair asrefugees. This year, as you consider your gift to theOne Great Hour of Sharing offering, for one mo-ment, think of what it would be like to not have aplace to call home, and then make your very bestgift. Let us make Ruth's promise our own. Let uslive out the call of solidarity with all people, espe-cially those displaced by disaster, war, and famine.

As we continue the season of

Lent, a time of prayer and reflec-tion, this year our focus will be a

study on THE CALL, The Life and Ministry of the Apostle Paul, by Adam Hamilton. We will meet at7pm the 5 Thursdays during Lent and meditate onour faith and dig deeper into what it means to us.

In Christian tradition, Holy Week beginson Palm Sunday and carries on throughMaundy Thursday, Good Friday, andHoly Saturday. It is a time for Christians

to reflect on Jesus’ journey to the Cross, begin-ning with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem andconcluding wish his lonely trek from the UpperRoom through Gethsemane and ultimately to Cal-vary and the empty tomb.

HOLY WEEK SERVICESPalm Sunday will include a special choir anthem, while children are waving palms.Good Friday Mayview Community Service will beat 6:30pm at Zion. A fellowship will follow after theservice.

    COMMUNITY, COUNTY &CONFERENCE CLAMOR

ANNUAL MEN'S RETREATThe Annual Men's Retreat will be at

Shanondale in Salem, MO on April 29-May 1,2016. I personally invest a great deal of my min-

istry specially reaching out to men in the churchand in the community beyond - whom I believecan be the largest neglected minority in thechurch. Beyond serving on building and groundscommittees and civic group style breakfasts, Ichallenge you to ask yourself how men are in-cluded at your church in spiritually transformingways. Statistics bear out that a man's personalengagement in the church impacts his entirefamily.

This weekend pulls together men frommany walks of life for a weekend on sacred

ground called Shannondale. Men are reachedfrom several approaches that can touch coreaspects of his being: through service, ruggedrecreation, contemplative communal with na-ture, sharing around bonfires, table (kitchen andgrill) fellowship, heart-felt worship, and manyone-on-one deep encounters. Aside from theincredible experience, we hope to jump-startcommunal faith back home at your church. Imake it to a point to round-up and wrangle asmany men from my community to attend and Imake sure my batteries are recharged by at-

tending myself. Will you strive to encourageat least one man to attend?- Pastor Paul Koch, Regional Minister Team The Christian Church in Mid-America

DEATH PENALTY OPPOSITIONCome hear a powerful faith story from JeanneBishop, sister of a murder victim, who has come tooppose the death penalty. Bishop is the tenaciouswoman at the center of this true-life murder storyand memoir. In 1990, her sister Nancy and brother -in-law Richard were murdered at their home in anaffluent Chicago suburb. Readers follow the un-

folding investigation to discover that the murdereris David Biro, a local high school student who hadstolen a gun. Biro is sentenced and two decadeslater Jeanne enters a maximum-security prison, where she's asked a simple question: what is yourrelationship to the offender? Bishop captivatesreaders with her deliberate, painful, and utterly au-thentic story that answers that question. All arewelcome - each event below is free.

EMMAUS HOMES In May 2015, the Emmaus Homes Boardannounced they would be transitioning clients fromthe Marthasville campus into the community oftheir choice. We have already experienced greatsuccess in the first six months of this process and,in many ways, the transition is moving faster thanwe anticipated.

This is an exciting time of change andgrowth for the clients and staff of Emmaus Homes. What remains unchanged is our commitment tothe mission and ministry of Emmaus. In many

ways, 2015 was a difficult year for all of us, how-ever, we remain focused on continuing our 120year tradition of providing high quality, faith-basedservices to people with developmental disabilities. We would LOVE to visit your church and share anupdate from Emmaus! Calvary

Jesus, the Christ, 33, of Nazareth, died Friday on Mount Calvary, also known as Gol-gotha, the place of the skull. Betrayed by the apostle Judas, Jesus was crucified by theRomans, by order of the Ruler Pontius Pilate. The causes of death were crucifixion, ex-treme exhaustion, severe torture, end loss of blood.

Jesus was, a descendant of Abraham, a carpenter of Nazareth, and Mary, His de-voted Mother. Jesus was born in a stable in the city of Bethlehem, Judea. He is survivedby His mother Mary, His faithful Apostles, numerous disciples, and many other followers.

Jesus was self educated and spent most of his adult life working as a Teacher. Jesus also occasionallyworked as a Medical Doctor and it is reported that he healed many patients. Up until the time of His death,Jesus was teaching and sharing the Good News, healing the sick, touching the lonely, feeding the hungry, and helping the poor.

Jesus was most noted for telling parables about His Father, a Kingdom and performing miracles, suchas feeding over 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish, and healing a man who was bornblind. On the day before His death, He held a Last Supper celebrating the Passover Feast, at which Heforetold His death.

The body was quickly buried in a stone grave which was donated by Joseph of Arimathea, a loyal friendof the family. By order of Pontius Pilate, a boulder was rolled in front of the tomb. Roman soldiers were put

    on guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that everyone try to live as Jesus did. Donations may besent to anyone in need.  http://www.vscoc.org/Bulletinfdr/Jesus_Obit.htm
