1 The Lamplighter December 2016 Salem United Church of Christ Higginsville, Missouri Dear Friends, One of the favorite authors in the Faris household is Madeleine L’Engle. Some of you may know her most fa- mous book, A Wrinkle in Time. She wrote dozens of books, some for children and young adults, some for adults, some fiction, some nonfiction. L’Engle was also a committed Episcopalian, and her sincere and deep Christian faith suffuses many of her award-winning books. Her work also includes a great deal of scientific thought and ide- as. Some would classify A Wrinkle in Time as a work of science fiction. It seems to me that L’Engle viewed science and her Christian faith in an integrated way. They were not in competition with each other, neither were they con- tradictory. Both science and faith were a part of who she was, and so she used them in her work. All of that is simply to provide context for a quote from Madeleine L’Engle that I came across recently. She wrote an Advent meditation on the Incarnation under the title of “A Sky Full of Children.” This is a part of that meditation. A sky full of God’s children! Each galaxy, each star, each living creature, every particle and subatomic particle of creation, we are all children of the Maker. From a subatomic particle with a life span of a few seconds, to a galaxy with a life span of billions of years, to us human creatures somewhere in the middle in size and age, we are made in God’s image, male and female, and we are, as Christ promised us, God’s children by adoption and grace. Children of God, made in God’s image. How? Genesis gives no explanations, but we do know instinctively that it is not a physical image. God’s explanation is to send Jesus, the incarnate One, God enfleshed. Don’t try to explain the Incarnation to me! It is further from being explainable than the furthest star in the furthest galaxy. It is love, God’s limitless love enfleshing that love into the form of a human being, Jesus, the Christ, fully human and fully divine. Was there a moment, known only to God, when all the stars held their breath, when the galaxies paused in their dance for a fraction of a second, and the Word, who had called it all into being, went with all his love into the womb of a young girl, and the universe started to breathe again, and the ancient harmonies resumed their song, and the angels clapped their hands for joy? Power. Greater power than we can imagine, abandoned, as the Word knew the powerlessness of the unborn child, still unformed, taking up almost no space in the great ocean of amniotic fluid, unseeing, unhearing, un- knowing. Slowly growing, as any human embryo grows, arms and legs and a head, eyes, mouth, nose, slowly swimming into life until the ocean in the womb is no longer large enough, and it is time for birth. Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity, Christ, the Maker of the universe or perhaps many universes, willingly and lovingly leaving all that power and coming to this poor, sin-filled planet to live with us for a few years to show us what we ought to be and could be. Christ came to us as Jesus of Nazareth, wholly human and wholly di- vine, to show us what it means to be made in God’s image. That is the mystery of Advent, Christmas, and the Incarnation. We cannot explain it. We cannot even begin to understand it. And yet we cannot deny its power to change us, to transform us, to sing to us of God’s love for all of the universe. L’Engle concludes her meditation with these words: “I stand on the deck of my cottage, looking at the sky full of God’s children, and know that I am one of them.” That is truly the love of God Incarnate. During Advent, may we all know the hope, the joy, the peace, and the love of which the season speaks to us. May the birth of that child so long ago, fill us with light, so that we can indeed be the light of the world. My family and I wish you all the merriest and most joyous Christmas, and peace in the New Year. Happy Advent, Tommy

Dear Friends, One of the favorite authors in the Faris household is Madeleine L’Engle. Some of you may know her most fa-mous book, A Wrinkle in Time. Christmas transformation

The earth has grown old with its burden of care, but at Christmas it always is young, the heart of the jewel burns lustrous and fair, and its soul full of music breaks the air, when the song of angels is sung.

—Phillips Brooks

“Christmas, my child, is love in ac-tion. Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.”

—Dale Evans

THANK YOU: We would like to say “Thank You” to all who participated in the Turkey Run/Walk on Novem-ber 12. We had 6 walkers and a dog along with 1 runner on the walking track. That day we collected 4 turkeys, 3 baking hens, and $295.00 in monetary donations. That money purchased an additional 14 turkeys and 19 baking hens. The 18 turkeys and 22 baking hens were given out at the Food Pantry on a first come first serve basis on November 15 and November 22. We would also like to say “Thank You” to Brian Welborn of Parks and Recrea-tion for co-sponsoring this event with us and allowing us to use the Shelter house next to the Community Build-ing. We also want to say “Thank You” to the Lafayette County C-1 School District, Barb Duffey, and Paula Oelrichs for allowing us to store the turkeys and hens in their freezer. Last but not least, we want to say “Thank You” to Mark Hook for putting up a tarp for a wind break, furnishing us with boxes for the turkeys and hens collected that day, and also for the pumpkins and ears of corn for the Fall decorations in the sanctuary and the 3 bushels of grain for the Harvest Gathering. Youth on Mission News

December Youth on Mission Opportunities!!!! The holiday season is busy for all of us, but Youth on Mission is here to help! Below are THREE upcoming fund-raisers that hopefully are advantageous to you as well as us.

Our annual cookie / bake sale will be held after BOTH worship services on Sunday, December 18th. We will be set up in the Fellowship Hall, as usual. Like last year, you may fill a box (or two or three) and make a donation to Youth on Mission. New this year, we also will have assorted baked goods pre-packaged on decorative plates, ready for gift-giving!

The Giving Tree is still standing in the sanctuary with tags for your use or gift-giving. Each tag has a camper’s contact information and a talent they would like to share with someone. We also have had numerous phone calls for yard work, window washing, furniture moving, and helping serve family dinners. Please let us know if there is something with which we can help. Again, donations are welcomed!

Finally, we are selling Royals ticket vouchers. Ticket Package is worth over $350.00 but sells for $39.99! For that, you receive:

2 - Game Tickets ABSOLUTELY FREE (there is a $2.00 facility charge per ticket upon redemption). Tickets are good for View Level seating. You may upgrade your seats and pay the cash differ-ence! Tickets are good Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Redemption at the Ticket Window.

10 - Half Price tickets for View Level seating and you may upgrade your seats and pay the difference! (5 coupons with 2 games per coupon). Tickets are valid for Sunday - Friday. Redemption at the Ticket Window or Online.

$5.00 game tickets valid for four (4) game tickets in view level for either April 12th or April 16th on-ly. Redemption at the ticket window.

Blackout dates include: Opening Day, Cardinals, Yankees and Boston Series. You may order vouchers from any Youth on Mission participant from now until December 31st AS LONG AS SUPPLIES LAST. These have been popular in the past, and they will go quickly. They make a wonderful Christ-mas gift!

If you have questions, please contact Amy Goetz at 660-641-2406 or Judi Knipmeyer at 660-641-0345. As always, thank you for your continued support, and Merry Christmas from Youth on Mission!

Overcoming despair

Christmas can be a difficult time for people who are hurting or grieving. In the 1860s, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow had reason to despair: America was at war with itself, his son was severely wounded in

battle and his wife died in a fire. The first Christmas after his wife’s death, Longfellow wrote,

“How inexpressibly sad are all holidays.”

Three years later, on Christmas Day 1864, Longfellow penned a poem that later became the song “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” The lyrics move from despair to hope — and, thanks to Jesus, so can we.

And in despair I bowed my head.

There is no peace on earth, I said!

For hate is strong, and mocks the song

of peace on earth, good will to men!

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!

The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,

with peace on earth, good will to men!

Our confirmands went to the Youth Fest/Festival of Sharing last week-end. It was a wonderful time for our young people to see what mission looks like. Along with fun for the youth, there was a lot of hard work. Pastor attended the Persons in Ministry retreat again this year, Sept. 19-21. The program was a presentation on world religions, focusing on Islam, Daoism, and Hin-duism. It was informative and great fellowship among various Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) persons in ministry was re-warding. In similar vein, the Lafayette Cluster Council is planning another educational event for this coming win-ter, to focus on world religion. More information will be forthcoming. Eve-ry three years, Pastor is required to at-tend an all-day event on Boundary Training in order to maintain his standing as an authorized minister in the UCC. He attended this event on Sept.29 at Southwood UCC. Pastor will be conducting a wedding on Sat., Oct. 22, and Betty Thaller will be con-ducting a wedding on Sat., Oct.29. The Western Association Fall Gathering will be on Sat. Oct. 22 at Southwood UCC in Raytown. He will leave before it ends to return and prepare for wed-ding. Lafayette County Project Con-nect will hold event on Sat. Nov. 5, and organizers looking for volunteers to help. Recently the First Assembly of God Church in Higginsville has to cease serving for Harvesters Commu-nity Food Network distribution. The Higginsville Ministerial Fellowship has decided to take on the project, but in-volving all the churches and the wider community. Distribution will be on the third Thursday of the month and vol-unteers can expect to spend up to 6 hours in setup, distribution and clean-up. Anyone interested can call First Presbyterian Church, leave name, phone number, and address to indicate willingness to volunteer.

Where’s your security?

When A Charlie Brown Christmas debuted in 1965, religious refer-ences were unheard of on television. Yet the show’s climax features the Christmas story verbatim. As Linus begins reciting Luke 2, he’s clutch-ing his ever-present blue blanket. Yet, as pastor Jason Soroski points out, Linus drops it right as he utters the words “fear not” (Luke 2:10).

Soroski believes the timing is intentional and that “Peanuts” creator Charles M. Schulz sends a simple, brilliant message. “The birth of Jesus separates us from our fears,” Soroski writes. It “frees us from the hab-its we are unable (or unwilling) to break ourselves. The birth of Jesus allows us to simply drop the false security we have been grasping so tightly, and learn to trust and cling to him instead.”
