AN EDWARDS EPISTLE In a few days, we will enter into Holy Week recalling all the drama of the entry into Jerusalem of Jesus, his supper with the disciples and friends, his agony in the garden, his arrest and trial, his crucifixion and words from the Cross, and God resurrecting him from the dead. It is so easy to consider Holy Week as a one time occurrence, events of the past. In so doing, we remain as historians and observers. As Christians living today, we are called to permit the events of that Holy Week to impact our lives and to be re-enacted in the ways we think, speak and act. People of faith are not spectators of Jesus; we are called to be alive in Christ, to grow into Christ. The Apostle Paul testifies: “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection… I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own… Straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:10,12b, 13c-14) Today we can share in the power of God’s resurrecting love and grace as we live in the sacredness of each day, each relationship and ourselves. God gives us the gift of life that we may celebrate the new creation God is establishing among and through us. Celebrate the power of the resurrection - Offer a word of encouragement to one who is burdened Assist a neighbor who is struggling with a life circumstance Write a note of gratitude to one who has enriched your life Serve with a group who are rubbing shoulders with those who need a community Grow into the image of Christ with intentional studies of the Scriptures and your faith As we share in the power of the resurrection, we will greet Easter Morning with the joyful acclamation: ALLELUIA! Search Team Report The search team is pleased to report that our search for a new Director of Children and Youth Ministries has ended successfully! Session has approved the hiring of Katie Burgoon as our new DCYM. Katie is a graduate of Austin College with both B.A. and M.A. degrees in Art. She is in the process of becoming a Certified Christian Educator. Katie comes to us from a similar position at St. Philip Presbyterian Church in the Fort Worth area. Katie has an outstanding vision for creating dynamic and faithful programs for children and youth from preschool to high school. Katie will be relocating to Stillwater the first of April, will worship with us April 7, and be in the office April 8. Special thanks to the search team that included Thad Leffingwell, Jenny Fowler, Sydney Reding, Tim Riley, Isaac Johnson, and Pastors Gordon and Leah. The team worked diligently over several months to solicit and review applications, interview several candidates via Skype, and interview two finalists in Stillwater. Several people contributed to the success of the search including members of the Youth, Children’s CE, and Personnel Committees and several of our youth. We appreciate the prayerful support of the congregation and patience throughout the process. Members of the congregation should also be aware that the job descriptions for the new DCYM and Associate Pastor Leah have changed once Katie arrives . Katie will be responsible for all activities and CE programs with children from preschool through high school (previously preschool-5th grade CE programs were Leah’s responsibility). Leah will take on new responsibilities for Family Ministry programs. These changes were approved by Session at the outset of our search. The search team will be organizing a pounding to help welcome Katie to Stillwater in the coming weeks. See article below on how to contribute.

Help welcome Katie Burgoon, our new Director of Children and Youth Ministry, to Stillwater and her new home with a modern version of an old-fashioned “pounding.”

A “pounding” was when people would give a pound of this, or a pound of that for a family’s pantry as a housewarming. Help stock Katie’s pantry by making a purchase of non-perishable items and placing in the collection box in the Narthex (Sunday mornings) or bring to the Church Office on or before Sunday, March 31. Items will be delivered to Katie’s home when she arrives. Suggestions: cleaning supplies; toilet paper, paper towels, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, condiments, mixes, popcorn, cocoa, tea, etc.

COME BE PART OF HELPING HANDS!!!!! Saturday, March 30 9:00 a.m.

Our church again has an opportunity to touch lives through mission work. FPC has been asked to join forces with students from Brenda Phillips’ OSU Disaster Recovery classes and from Hesston College who are involved in Mennonite Disaster Recovery classes to help local families from Glencoe affected by the disastrous fire in the summer of 2012. These families need assistance in removing old fence, cutting trees from the fence line and installing new fence materials.

The work is scheduled to be conducted on Saturday, March 30 from 9:00 a.m. until approx. 4:00 p.m. depending upon how the work progresses. Hesston College students will need to leave around 4:00 p.m. to return to Kansas.

Your time and talents are needed. Ways to help and touch lives: Sign up to be a work volunteer and join the team on Saturday, March 30. We will meet at the FPC Church

and carpool to the sites from there. Loan the work team a chainsaw or fencing tools. A few chainsaws available, but could use several more so

tree removal can be spread out among the work teams and be quickly done to move on to the fencing. Fencing pliers and stretching tools are also available in small numbers; more would be great to have.

Assist with the preparation and delivery of a lunch for the team. Barb Henderson and Brenda Phillips are coordinating this effort and would appreciate any assistance available.

This is a lot to accomplish in one day, but many hands make light work. We have the blessing of having young volunteers from two colleges assisting with this effort. Now we need some experienced volunteers and plenty of tools to keep everyone active and working. Please contact Tim Schlais to volunteer or loan tools at [email protected] or by cell at 405-762-0993.

Palm Sunday - March 24

8:30 and 11:00 am services in Sanctuary. At the beginning of Holy Week, we remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem as people waved palms, and laid them at his feet. All children are invited to meet in the Worship Center at 8:15 or 10:45 to join in the Procession of the Palms and wave palms as they enter the Sanctuary. (Palms are purchased through the “Enough for Everyone” ministry of the PC(USA). ) The “One Great Hour of Sharing” Offering will be received at this time. Please bring OGHS fish boxes.

Maundy Thursday/Tenebrae Service Thursday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The first part of the service celebrates the servant-love of our Lord through a ritual of handwashing, individual commissioning, and Communion. The next part remembers the last events of Christ’s life here on earth, and the loneliness and pain he experienced. This is symbolized by gradual dimming of the lights and removal of adornments from the Sanctuary. Persons leave in silence and anticipation of the Resurrection. (Childcare is provided).

Good Friday Friday, March 29 noon - 3:00 p.m. The Worship Center will be open for private meditation. Materials will be available. At 3:00 p.m. a brief closing service will be conducted.

Celebration Sunday for Children – Easter Sunday, March 31

On Easter Sunday, March 31, all children through 5th grade are invited for an Easter Celebration and Egg Hunt in the Multipurpose Room from 9:30-10:45am. Come sing songs, hear the Easter story, make a Resurrection Egg to take home, play “egg” games, and enjoy Easter Cakes that we will make and bake during the hour. The Celebration concludes with an Egg Hunt in the east courtyard.

Ecumenical Holy Week Services Weekdays, March 25-29, 12:10-12:50 p.m. St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 601 S. West St (corner of 6th & West). The Stillwater Minister’s Fellowship provides midday services during Holy Week at St. Francis Church.

Easter/Celebration of the Resurrection

Sunday, March 31 Worship services at 8:30 & 11:00 a.m. Hallelujah! The Lord is risen indeed! Come celebrate the triumphant Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ by sharing the Sacrament of Communion with the entire First Church family. Special organ and vocal music will be part of the service.

This is a note written with thanksgiving to the kind saints in the Prayer Shawl Ministry. My shawl surrounds me with a rainbow of gorgeous colors. Dear First Presbyterian Church You hosted on March 14 what was arguably the most significant event to date fro Stillwater C.A.R.E.S. and the network of social service providers in our community: MPOWR Stillwater. 75 people attended, representing over 50 local agencies and churches. Eight Bridges Out of Poverty statewide leaders were also with us for the day. Together, we learned about the MPOWR Collaborative Case Management System for cohesively managing benevolence that will help people build resources for a better life. The complementary contribution of your fabulous Fellowship Hall provided the ideal venue for this event. This building really is a tremendous community asset and, honestly, one of the best equipped and most beautiful gathering places in town. Cathy Fairbanks is so gracious and worked with our local arrangements team to ensure everything was in order and all of our needs were met. Pete Thomas accommodated meetings for technical set up and checks. I sincerely appreciate your personal interest in and support of the work of Stillwater C.A.R.E.S. to connect those who provide a hand up to Stillwater’s poor. I don’t know how MPOWR Stillwater could have gone any better, thanks to your hospitality. Know that your support is part of a much bigger picture of community transformation. I am so grateful to have you on board with Stillwater C.A.R.E.S.

Sincerely, Quinn Schipper, Executive Director Stillwater C. A. R. E. S., Inc.

SpiritLink News On Sunday, Feb. 17, the Stewardship Committee organized a fun and interesting Celebration Sunday lesson about “Treasures in Heaven: Spirit-Led

Stewardship” for the SpiritLink kids. The children started their adventure in a huge canoe steered by Tim Schlais. Laura Smith talked about what our treasures are, and how we can all share the good things we have with others. Following their treasure maps, the kids dug for treasure in the sand, found a treasure chest under huge rocks, followed the light through a dark cave, visited an oasis and found the Christian flag to wave over their boat. Ted Smith, Becky Schlais and Edna Visnic assisted the treasure-hunters on their quests. The kids and the adults studied a great lesson and enjoyed getting to know each other. Thank you to all who contributed to this project! SpiritLink is our workshop rotation Sunday School for children grades 1 through 5.

Adult Education

Long Term Classes Abiding Bible Study This class moves sequentially through the Bible with study and discussion of a passage each week. Meets in the Library—all are welcome. Leader: Dan Grischkowsky

Seasons of the Spirit Our worship services usually focus on readings from the Revised Common Lectionary, which is a 3-year cycle of readings from the Old Testament, Psalms, Epistles, and Gospels. This class follows the lectionary cycle along with worship, so that the passages studied usually align with those you will hear in the worship service that day. The visual, literary and other arts are also used to open opportunities for new perspectives on Scripture, life and faith. Meets in South Fellowship Hall. Leader: Denise Rex

Short-Term Class After Easter! New Short Course: Making Moral Decisions (April 7-May 12) North Fellowship Hall, 9:45-10:45am Sundays There are many things that influence the decisions we make every day. We all have certain rules by which we must abide, as well as local, state, and federal laws we are required to obey. But many of our daily decisions and interactions with others are driven by less well-defined guidelines. Even Christians seem to run the gamut from those who do good things to honor God to those who serve others because they fear God's wrath. And what if our intentions are good but we don't act on them? Are we still "good people?" Come explore how we make faithful individual and collective decisions in this six-part series, led by Pastors Gordon Edwards and Leah Hrachovec.

Our Next SpiritLink Unit — The Beatitudes: God Bless You! (Sundays April 7 – May 12) 9:30-10:45am Blessed are the poor…. Understanding the Beatitudes is a spiritual journey that we take in this unit to assimilate Jesus’ way of living into our daily lives. Each Beatitude provides us with a way to be like Jesus, a way to walk in Jesus’ path, and a way to relate to others as Jesus would want. Each workshop focuses on one to two Beatitudes and provides us with experiences to understand them. In the cooking workshop (Thou Art) we make Comfort Jello and learn that as Christians we have a Great Comforter in times of mourning and loss. In the game workshop (On Location) we learn what it means to hunger and thirst for righteousness as we initiate a shoe drive for children without shoes, understanding that living in God’s Kingdom means a call to action. In a peace walk (Burning Bush) we learn how to be peacemakers in our families, daily lives, community, and the world. In the Computer Workshop (Scrolls & Scribes) we will fly the Galilee Flyer as we learn the Beatitudes and answer quiz questions. We will try to memorize the Beatitudes together.

Preschool News from Director Dana Brown Warmer weather is promised later in this week and we are so glad! Spring always makes for happy children and teachers when all of the plants start to turn green, produce flowers again, and we can get outside consistently.

Spring brings pre-enrollment for next year for the preschool. We will open pre-enrollment for our current families right after spring break and then open it to other families in the community a couple of weeks later. We are currently serving 114 children in 91 different families and have had many inquire about enrollment for next year already. Thanks so much for support as we provide this wonderful outreach to Stillwater community. The preschool will be closed during spring break, March 18-22 and then reopen on Monday, March 25. We are always looking for donations of gently used toys. If you are spring cleaning at your house and wonder what you can do with the toys you no longer need, we can always put them to good use here!

Seasoned Adults What a fun time we had on Monday night (the 18th) when the South West Fuse joined us again with an outstanding performance! It amazes me how many instruments this group plays. Our own Nick Gedra, Cynthia and Tom’s son, along with Scott Stone (Steve Stone’s brother), Braden Lanier,

Greg Worthy, and Joe Jarvis entertained us royally. I asked for “The Cholesterol Song” again!! Charlie’s Chicken catered our dinner with comfort food. It doesn’t hurt for us to have it once in a while, does it? The program for our April 15th Seasoned Adult Gathering will feature Lucy Newlin and Bobby Simma. “Spring” will be the theme of their musical program. Come join us for dinner, fellowship and a “neat program” and let’s forget about income taxes!

Blessings to all, Margy

All University students (Presbyterian or not!) are invited to join in any of our fellowship and study opportunities. Whether you are interested in an in-depth Bible study or just some time to meet other students and talk about life and faith, there’s a place for you here.

Our weekly Bible Study meets every Wednesday afternoon 12:30-1:30pm near Caribou Coffee in the OSU Student Union. This year we explore topics from www.thethoughtfulchristian.com as a springboard for our discussions and study.

Lunch Out University students, we’d like to take you to lunch! Meet on Sunday, March 24, after worship near the Information Center in the Narthex. Together we will decide where to go to lunch. Congregation members are welcome to attend.

Home Energy Makeover Program

Goal: Help persons that are struggling to pay utility bills by making their homes more energy efficient.

What we do: Install weatherization materials such as, caulking, weather-stripping, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and foam sealers for outlet and light switches. We check water temperature coming out of the hot water tank and advise whether thermostat adjustment is needed. We also check attic insulation and suggest the depth to add, if needed. Beforehand the homeowner/resident must sign a liability wavier and allow access to estimate materials needed. There is no cost for this service.

We are presently seeking homes to be made over this spring (between mid-March and mid-May). Contact Deacon Gerald Stangl (377-3400).

Volunteers (15+ years old) are needed to perform the above tasks. Contact Deacon Gerald Stangl (377-3400) to sign up. (New volunteers must attend a training class.)

DEACON’S CORNER

Deacons Food Offering Basket Your gifts of non-perishable food and personal items to the shopping cart in the Narthex are more valuable and more appreciated than ever during these difficult economic times. The items are distributed to local agencies who help

those in need. All items are appreciated but please consider bringing a sack with items that could create a meal for a family (such as spaghetti sauce, noodles, vegetable, and fruit.) Look for items that are simple to prepare and shelf stable.

Providing these simple, inexpensive things can really help your “neighbor.”

If you have questions regarding your giving statement, contact Ben DeWalt, FPC’s Financial Secretary, at 372-5580 or accountantfp@swbell. Remember: he wears dual hats ~ Financial Secretary and Office Assistant. If he is not in the Accounting Office, he is probably in the 2nd floor Balcony Office. Ben’s work schedule this semester is: Monday and Wednesday 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Friday 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Fair Trade Store

Sunday mornings in the Hospitality Area.

One Great Hour of Sharing As the Lenten Season comes to a close, we celebrate the compassion of Christ with the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. The offering supports the work of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program, The Presbyterian Hunger Program and The Self-Development of People. As we celebrate the greatest gift that Christ gave for us, we have the opportunity to care for one another as Jesus called upon us to do. Please bring your offering on Palm Sunday. Children are encouraged to bring their fish collection boxes to Time with Children.

Lily Deliverers Needed If you could deliver a few lilies after Easter Sunday, please contact Deacon Claudia Roach (747-5796). Lilies are delivered to shut ins and members who are ill or have experienced a family loss recently. Addresses and directions are provided.
