FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23, Ephesians 2:4-10

John 3:14-21 Brief Reflection: God’s mercy and love, made clear in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, overcame our sins and transgressions. God does not love us conditionally, or despite our sins, but rather because he created us, and he is love. His mercy and compassion are that of a loving Father.

All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. All healthy Catholics between ages 18 and 59 are to fast on Good Friday. To fast means to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken for good health but together they should not equal a full meal. Eating between meals is not per-mitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juic-es are allowed.

On Palm Sunday, March 25, the Church cele-brates Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem to ac-complish his paschal mystery. The memorial of this event is to be included in every Mass. The Ro-man Missal provides three forms for this: the Proces-sion (before the principal Mass), the Solemn Entrance (before other well-attended Masses), and the Simple Entrance. If the Procession cannot be held, the Sol-emn Entrance may be used before the principal Mass. The Roman Missal should be studied carefully as ministers, planners and musicians prepare the liturgy. Lenten Penance Services at 7 pm within Marion

county vicariate : St Patrick, Canby, Tuesday, March 13, St Luke, Woodburn, Tuesday, March 20, St Mary, Mt Angel, also Tuesday, March 20

Join Mater Dei Radio for three exciting nights with EWTN’s Dr. Ray Guarendi. Equip yourself for Lent! Don’t miss Dr. Ray’s “Strengthen Your Family with Catho-lic Media” on March 12-14 in Vancouver, Eugene, and Portland. Tickets are free, but very limited. Get yours now at MaterDeiRadio.com.

Sound System Sacred Heart Church Dear parishioners, I hope you have noticed some improve-ments with our sound system in the last week. We are working on it! A parishioner asked me this week if they can donate toward fixing the sound system. I thank you parishioners for always being concerned and ready to support and maintain our parish. The total cost of fixing the system (mounting antennas, new ear set and labor) is approximately $3130. Cascade Sound of Salem is providing this service. Thanks to all those plan-ning on contributing to this. Please bring your contributions to the office. May God bless you. Fr. Chrispine

A note of thanks to all the families of Sacred Heart-St. Louis Parish that pledged their financial support to Mater Dei Radio. We were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response given by the people of your parish. During the week-end presentations 107 families filled out pledge cards totaling $9,672. When you add the $5,000 matching gift, the total support from your parish family comes to a very generous $14,672. This goes a long way in help-ing us to achieve our goal of $1.8-million to cover the costs associated with building our media center, which will bring more souls closer to Christ. Thank you, again, for your prayers and support. God Bless You!

The Liturgies of the Easter Triduum The evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper should be celebrated at the most suitable evening hour. There may be a liturgy on Thursday morning only “for those who are in no way able to take part in the evening Mass.” This would discourage school Masses, but it would be appropriate for children to take part in other services marking the end of Lent and the approach of the Triduum. It would be appropriate to pray Morning Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours. Thus the ideal is a single Holy Thursday Mass in a parish, and only the inability of the space to accommodate those who wish to attend should suggest the possibility of a second Mass. In no way should the scheduling of a second liturgy cause either liturgy to be rushed. The private offering of any Mass is strictly forbidden. If the washing of the feet or mandatum is celebrated, this rite should be characterized by its simplicity, allowing the powerful gesture of the servant Christ to model for us the charity and humility required of all Christ’s disciples. It is not necessary that the number of persons whose feet are washed be twelve. Ministers should strive to carry out the mandatum reverently and graciously and avoid other rites and statements of commitment which are inappropriate at the liturgy of Holy Thursday. The renewal of priestly commitment from the Chrism Mass is not to be used at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, nor should there be any attempt to imitate the Jewish Seder on Holy Thursday or, in fact, on any other occasion. Teaching about the Passover supper is more appropriately done by a Jew. The Roman Missal instructs that the collection of gifts and money today be for the poor. The tabernacle should be empty before the liturgy today. Enough bread should be consecrated at this Mass for com-munion today and tomorrow. Though Holy Communion may be brought to the sick today, communion may be distrib-uted at the church itself only within the Mass. Communion under both kinds is strongly encouraged. This calls for care in planning whenever it is done. There should be a sufficient number of communion ministers, carefully practiced, so that it can be done with great dignity. Following the prayer after Communion, the Blessed Sacrament is transferred to the place of reposition. This may be the usual tabernacle if it is in an area removed from the sanctuary. The rite for this procession is described in the Roman Missal. “The faithful should be encouraged to continue adoration before the Blessed Sacrament for a suitable period of time during the night, according to local circumstances, but there should be no solemn adoration after midnight.” (Roman Missal) In fact, the nature of the Triduum before the Easter Vigil is that of prayer and vigil and anticipation. Fasting is one expression of this. Another is private and communal prayer. Thus even after the formal period of adoration on Thursday night, the faithful may be invited to come at any and all hours to watch and pray between Thursday’s liturgy and the Easter Vigil.

The Conclusion of Lent Lent ends as the Church begins the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday night. That liturgy is the first moment of the Paschal Triduum.

Events around the area . . .

Challenge yourself this year, and go beyond the usual practice of "giving up" something. Now is a great time to take stock of your spiritual life and to grow in it. Not sure where to start? Check out these ideas: 1. Make a commitment to read the Sunday scriptures (usccb.org/readings) before you go to Mass. In the same way that reading up on football or basketball players, opposing teams, and coaching strategies will help you experience a game more fully, familiarizing yourself with the readings ahead of time will help you experience them in a deeper way on Sunday. 2. Think about what you spend your money on. Do you buy too many clothes? Spend too much on dinner out? On drinks ? Pick one type of expenditure that you'll "fast" from during Lent, and then give the money you would usually spend to a local charity like the food bank. 3. Take something on - 40 days of letter writing, 40 acts of kindness, 40 phone calls to the important people in your life. 4. Go to a weekday Mass one day during the week. Many parishes offer them early in the morning, at noon, or after work. Daily Masses are often more intimate and shorter than Sunday Mass.

Use your CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar daily to guide your Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving. As a family, read the Stories of Hope and daily reflections to inspire your Lenten journey—and guide your Lenten almsgiving. Prepare simple meatless meals on Fridays throughout Lent, in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world.
