    ANNUAL REPORT for 2008

    1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Despite the fact that the elected Executive Committee has only about 9 months to plan, organize and carry

out activities for the year, the IEEE Computer Society-Malaysia Section (IEEE-CS Malaysia) has had another

busy year organizing numerous activities for the benefit of members, professionals and students. A total of

32 activities were organized for the year 2008 and in fact, this is the highest number of activities organized

    by IEEE-CS Mlalaysia so far.

This year's activities were mainly conferences where IEEE-CS Malaysia either a co-sponsor or a technical

co-sponsor of these conferences. The year also saw the IEEE-CS Malaysia successfully organized two (2)

technical lectures by international subject matter experts which were made possible via the Distinguish

Visitor Program (DVP). The last activity of the year saw IEEE-CS Malaysia collaborated with Freescale

Semiconductor Malaysia (Freescale Malaysia) to organize the Smart Car Competition 2008. The competition

which was held for the first time in Malaysia, saw 28 teams from 11 local universities taking part in the

competition which was made possible through the sponsorship and guidance of Freescale Malaysia.

Several conferences organized in 2008 will contribute to income which shall be utilized for organizing next

year's activities. All in all, 7 conferences were organized, 8 educational / technical trainings were conducted

and 3 professional programs were attended. As for the Smart Car Competition 2008, it has been categorized

    4.0 HIGHLIGHTS OF 2008

The following are highlights on some of the events that have been co-organized and attended for the year.

    CITISIA 2008

The 2nd IEEE Conference on Innovative Technologies in Intelligent Systems and Industrial

    Applications (CITISIA'08) was the first

conference to take place in the year. This

    year's conference which was organized

by the IEEE MMU Student Branch

managed to attract participations not only

from local universities but also from

Singapore. A total of 24 conference

papers were accepted from 29 papers

that was submitted. The papers accepted

were mainly from USM, UiTM, Monash

University, UTM, MMU, UPM, IIUM and

    NTU (Singapore).

The CITISIA 2009 will be organized by the IEEE Student Branch of Monash University, Sunway Campus

from 25th until 26th July 2009 and the IEEE-CS Malaysia shall continue to be a co-sponsor of the conference.

    UN GAID FORUM

The IEEE-CS Malaysia participated in the Global Forum on

Access and Connectivity and Innovative Funding

Mechanismswhich was organized by the United Nations Global

Alliance for ICT and Development (UN GAID). The event which

was held from 19th to 20th May 2008 was a side event to the World

Congress of Information Technology (WCIT) 2008. The two-days

event was attended by Vice-Chair and Secretary of the chapter.

The objectives of the event was to have a practical, results-

oriented format, including interactive, multi-stakeholder panel

discussions, partnership announcements, as well as opportunities

for participants to showcase their ICT development projects to

potential partners and donors. The Forum also was intended to

provide a networking platform for leaders from the public, private and financial sectors to meet and forge new

    partnerships for the future.

    MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The chapter has planned for 2 membership drive program to be held for the year. To support the plan, the

chapter has also printed out 50 IEEE-CS Malaysia t-shirts to add to existing promotional materials. The IEEE

HQ also sent over the necessary promotional materials; brochure, leaflets and posters to be used for the

    membership-drive purposes.

The first membership drive program of the year was held at UNITEN on the 22nd April 2008 and the

objectives were to encourage professionals (TNB employees and UNITEN lecturers) to become members of

IEEE & IEEE Computer Society. The chapter t-shirts were put on display and were given away to those who

signed up as member of the chapter.

Another membership drive program was held during the ITSIM 2008 conference where the membership

promotional materials were enclosed together with other conference materials that were provided to the

    participants.

DVP TALKSTwo international subject matter experts were brought over to the country in August 2008 under the

Distinguish Visitor Program (DVP) to share their experience and knowledge in their area of specialization. Dr

Mukesh Mahonia, a Senior Manager with IBM India spoke on Data Analytic Integration & Business

Intelligence. The talk was held at Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Putra

    Malaysia (UPM) Serdang.

The second DVP speaker, Dr Thanos Demiris who works with 2gen, a company based in Technology Park,

Greece, is an expert in Digital Media and Internet Technologies. He shared his knowledge on Ubiquitous

Information Access in Integrated Healthcare and the talk was held at MIMOS Berhad, Technology Park

    Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.

    ITSIM 2008

The International Symposium on Information Technology (ITSIM) 2008 conference

which was co-sponsored by the chapter is one of the major highlight of the year. The event

which was held from 26th until 29th August 2008 at KL Convention Center saw

participations not only from all major universities locally but also managed to bring in

    participants from about 30 countries.

The ITSIM 2008 Conference proceedings have also been submitted for publication with

IEEE Xplore which will saw a knowledge contribution of more than 300 papers to be made

available online for the research community to benefits.

    SMART CAR COMPETITION 2008

The final and major highlights of the the year was

the Smart Car Competition 2008 which was

targeted at engineering students of local

    universities. The educational-based competition

aims to expose students to programming on an

actual 32 bit micro controller and to enable them

to enhance their technical skills by challenging

them to produce an intelligent racing car. The

programs also intend to indirectly motivates them to enjoy engineering subjects and provide to them the

avenue and opportunities to exchange knowledge and learn from peers from the other universities. A total of

28 teams from 11 universities participated in the competition which was held at the Multipurpose Hall SIRIM
