Overview of Project

Page 3: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

Overview of Project• Background: This is the second All Society Research

Project (ASRP)2003: examined current society members2004: examined non-renewing society members

• Current project’s purpose: gather data from individuals who maintained their IEEE membership but dropped their society membership in one or more IEEE societies

• Project team: 36 Society representatives, one staff member from RAD, one staff member from TAD and IEEE research staff

• All Societies participated except – IEEE Broadcast Technology Society who had an individual

project already scheduled– IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society because they did not

have members in 2003

Page 4: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

Research Goals

• Provide societies with information about non-renewing members

• Identify the reasons for dropping membership• Help identify potential improvements in

product and services• Help identify possible strategies for

membership growth and improved member retention

• Understand IEEE society members and the value of society membership

Page 5: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

Methodology: Questionnaire Development

• Consensus process for format and wording• Developed a template questionnaire

– Served as the framework for society surveys– Contained standard and customizable questions

• Each society representative could customize the questionnaire for his or her own society

Page 6: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

Methodology: Population

– 33,683 IEEE Higher-grade members who dropped at least one society membership (no Affiliates)

– Of the 33,683, 8% did not have an e-mail address on file and another 2% did not want mailings

– This resulted in a total of 30,376 individual members who could be surveyed

– Number of “dropped” Society members ranged from a low of 161 to a high of 12,116/per Society.

Page 7: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

Methodology: Stratified Sample• 32 of the 36 participating Societies had fewer than

1,200 “dropped” members• All of these members were eligible to participate in this

survey• There were four Societies (CAS, CS, ComSoc and SP) with

more than 1,200 “dropped” members– Approximately 1,200 members were randomly selected from

each of these Societies and eligible to participate

• In order not to overburden participants, a member who dropped more than two Societies was only asked to comment on two dropped Societies

• This did not affect approximately 94% of the sample because these members dropped only one or two Societies

• The remaining 6% of members were systematically pared down to make sure they were only asked about two Societies

Page 8: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

Methodology: Final Sample Asked to Participate

• 17,941 current IEEE Higher-grade members with an email address on file who dropped a Society membership they held in 2003.

• These 17,941 individual members represent 20,513 dropped Society memberships.

Page 9: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

Methodology: Data Collection

• An e-mail invitation explaining the project and including a personalized URL was sent mid-June 2004

• The URL link connected participants to a web survey pre-programmed to only ask questions related the Societies they had dropped

• Reminder was sent to non-respondents about one or two weeks after the launch

• Data collection started on 17 June and ended 12 July, when the survey closed for analysis

Page 10: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

IEEE Education Society: Overview

Page 11: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

Response Rates

• 372 current IEEE members who dropped their IEEE Education Society membership were invited to participate

• A total of 118 former Society members completed surveys for a 32% response rate

• Not all respondents answered all questions

Some members have suggested that they view their total IEEE investment as a package (Membership + regional assessments +

optional pubs), and that there is a maximum price they are willing to pay for the package. Once their investment reaches this maximum,

they start to cancel Society memberships or optional pubs. Is this how you view your IEEE charges?

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE

Education Society?

Page 55: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society?

• I did not read the publication

• I didn't find the Transactions on Education useful to me.

• My institution has a global subscription, so i can consult all the IEEE publications with my institution subscription, and only subcribe personally the societies closer to my research areas

• Magazine was too abstract - not enough practical information - on career paths and potential in Education - on differing curricula and educational strategy alternatives - ... Did not get value from the membership in this particular society.

• Not enough time to read it carefully. I have two society memberships. Maybe next year I will cancel computer society and switch back to education society.

• I am more closely affiliated professionally with Biomedical Engineering than Education, so the change seemend appropriate in light of the cost of maintaining two memberships.

• There is not a special reason. Perhaps I am more interested in other societies

• I have retired from the professor at a univercity since 2003.

• I found the article not very helpful and interesting to me, as they often treated engineering topics others than computer science.

• I am unable to use that knowledge in my present work

Page 56: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• The membership is not useful for me

• I was working in e-Learning for the past couple of years, and found the articles typical academic: Irrelevant and in most cases years behind the real life. Since I was professor in my former life, I know the circus. As an academic, I would have liked the articles (a nice way of getting at least a few publication points if you are under teaching overload, and it is fair with regards to the publishing collegues), but after a few years in this business, it is just a "forget it". Most articles are reports about honorable activities but don't bring us forward. May be the Education Society should open up a bit more to the world of professional training/learning/assessment.

• Money

• Cannot manage multiple memberships due financial restraints.

• Did not find the value i needed from the publication

• Lost interest

• I have retired from a technical colledge recently.

• Joined Ed. Society when thinking about pursuing Ed. career, but have sinced changed directions.

• Loss of money

• Change in job position--from department chair to professor; I found the journal of minimal value, and now that I am not department Chair, scanning the contents via the library will be sufficient

Page 57: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• Budget

• I am preparing to retire from education in the next year and feel that membership in the IEEE Education Society will not benefit me for this year.

• Because it focused to EE Engneering and I need something quite general in Education.

• I am not interested in education any longer

• Now our university subscribes IEL, and I do not need to be a member of the society just to read the transactions.

• I did not find the articles particularly relevant to how to teach science.

• Though I am very much interested in continuing the membership, this society does not have major activity in this region and there are some financial constraint.

• I expected more topics on how to teach (pedagogics and didactics) but received more or less only subjects on what to teach.

• I didn't like the Trans. on Education

• I have very little time to read all my IEEE publications. I guess I need to drop at least one society which I am not familiar with.

Page 58: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• I had unforeseen expenses and I did not renew the IEE Education Society

• I'm approaching retirment

• This was more a personal interest rather than my mainstream subject. With the current pressure on academics (in the UK at least) to publish etc., there is really no time left for me to indulge in activities (even jusreading) which are unlikely to result in measurable output.

• There was no technical value to membership. I was throwing money away.

• The information that was published was of such a restricted "nitty gritty" scope, that it was not at all usefull to extend/expand the results and put it in a broader context

• Agenda is not directly relevant to my interests and current job role

• I live in a developing country. My annual income is very low compared with an average salary for some with comparable skills in USA. So I have got to cancel my Education Society membership to be able to keep my IEEE membership.

• No relevance to current job

• I find the society too much US focused. There are many other educational systems all over the world, especially in Europe, but they didn't get the attention they deserve.

• Not interested any more in that field

Page 59: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• As I am nearing retirement, I decided to minimize the amount of new material entering my life. I can get access to anything in the publications from others in the college.

• University library stocks Trans. on Education

• Role change. I previously managed a training program; I no longer do that.

• cost factor, change of academic position

• No perceived value

• I don't recall receiving material or activities relating to my membership in the Education Society.

• Because right now I am a full-time student, not a professor

• Money

• I wish to know all society inside IEEE and from that I will choose one, which one is most suitable for me. IEEE do not have option for trial. Some IEEE society are very dynamic society, i.e. comsoc, some very bored, some very exciting. I wish to join a society where they are welcome me and I feel comfortable. This year I did join a wrong society for a reason that I can't tell anyone. Probably next year I will join back IEEE education society and comsoc. I will drop my membership in IEEE control society and magnetic society.

• I did not use the resources much.

Page 60: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• Retirement, and depreciation of our curency

• money

• not really relate to my area of interest

• Education is a secondary interest for me. I joined the Education Society really on a trial basis to see just what the Education Society does. Recently, I gained additional reaposnibilities that preclude my spending much time in education-related activities. Therefore, I dropped membership in the Education Society. The Power Engineering Society and the Industry Applicatons Society serve my primary interests; therefore, I will maintain my membership in these Societies.

• My IEEE bill/dues were too high. I had to cut back something. So I cut the Education Society. Also, I wanted to add a subscription to the Journal of Nanotechnology which added to my bill and therefore something else had to go.

• I had planed to have memmbership in IEEE Education Society for one year only, just to sense it.

• I started PhD studies and did not have economical support at that time.

• Had only been a member for one year and did not see the benefits of being part of the society in that year.

Page 61: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• Could not get time to go through article and follow up but I like this Trans. on IEEE Edu.. , as other priorities came on the way.

• money

• I retired from full-time teaching in June of 2003. Since I am no longer actively engaged in teaching, I decided to cancel my membership in the IEEE Education Society. In addition, the IEEE Education Society is focused on four-year colleges and universities and as a community college faculty member, I felt that I was not fully accepted in the Education Society. I did attend some of the AdComm meetings at the ASEE Annual Conference for a period of time, but did not attend at the recent ASEE Conference in Salt Lake City.

• Money

• My employer did not provide financial assistance to IEEE membership and other society subscriptions.

• No benefit. I get all the information/benefits from ASEE.

• Becase i do not have enought money to renew it

• It turned out that my interests were not the same as most folks in the IEEE Education Society. Hence the published material was not of interest and I was not reading it.

Page 62: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• Not much content relevant to my area

• My research funding prevented me from continuing the membership, i had to prioritize other events/equipment.

• Because I was paying too much for IEEE and then I have to discard something.

• Because of economical problems in my country, so I cannot afford the total amount with my salary.

• same

• The publication was not useful to me.

• It was too much oriented toward engineering. Since I am in computer science I did not think that it was very helpful to me.

• Not as applicable to my work area as I thought it would be.

• Very little benefit from articles.

• I did not feel that my interests in the field were being adequately covered by the society and its publications

• would have preferred to see greater relevance

Page 63: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• not enough money

• Money (My membership in 2003 was free as a new Senior member).

• To reduce the gharge.

• The scope of Educational Society is far from my interests. I am a High School Teacher and not a College or University Teacher.

• To little return for the extra money

• Not of sufficient interest

• Because I decided to get the information I need in my activities from the Digital Library of Computer Society and exceeded my budget. Also I detected free access to information from the Education Society publication.

• I did not see a substantial benefit from my 2003 membership of the Education Society.

• I am already heavily involved in the education process and instead joined the IEEE Communication Society. We've recently been authorized to offer BS degrees in Communication Systems.

• I'm in my eightieth year. I worked and studied for decades to prepare for a second career in teaching after retirement. The education bureaucracy wouldn't let it happen.

Page 64: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• money

• Money

• No longer involved in education in the sciences.

• The Education Society has not supplied what I expected.

• Transactions were poorly written and not of much use.

• Not useful or relevant to my interests and work.

• In 2003 my goal was to find out what was the point of view of Education Society on its main field. So it was just checking. Second reason was that Trans. on Education is printed only in black and white (though containing interesting papers diserving at least as fine graphics as in IEEE Spectrum). I may say I give this society up temporarily.

• because I didn't like the documents

• I was short of money and my institution has access to IEEE XPLORE, since pasta year ( I'm not sure about this). I 'd rather prefer to read articles on paper, but...

• Finacial and time. I decided to concentrate my reading activity on the main stream of my job.

• The topics focussed by the socitety were not of high interest to me.

Page 65: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? (Continued)

• Because I want to decrease the amount I pay.

• Fees ceiling vs current needs

• I did not find the publications relevant to my career, and it was to expensive to justify keeping it.

• Actually, I don't remember if I did or not

• I did not find the publication added value to my knowledge and activity in the field of education in IT.

• It is not interesting for my and for my work.

• transactions

• Transactions on Education, not interested in the content

• IEEE Transaction on Education. Try to get some "Industrial" people into the board. There are enough people floating at the boarder between academic education/commercial training/lifelong learning.

• The topics were of no interest to me

• Transactions

• Transactions

• transaction on education (?) ; articles mainly written from a pure technical perspective without any ambition to look further to the possible "generic applicability" of the realisations

• Transactions on Engineering Education (no comment)

• What ever I was sent did not help me better teach my software engineering courses.

• IEEE transactions on education - too content specific and not enough general areas

• Transactions - not enough publications per year. I would prefer a shorter publication with more issues per year, so I can read it during the year

• Transactions

• IEEE Trans on Education, too few articles on modern methods of learning and too much electronic technologies

In the previous question, you indicated that you believe IEEE Education Society does not have sufficient educational opportunities/programs. Please briefly tell us what types of educational

opportunities and programs (format, topic, etc.) you would be interested in.

• Events that enable networking with the objective of obtaining a position in a local university, company education department,... Events that enable volunteers to contribute time for some worthy educational cause. Events that stimulate dialog on education program needs.

• Iwould be interested in programs addressing the multi-disciplinarity approah needed to design/build/maintain any complex system. They should be organized as permamnet education programs with series of lecture concentrated in short periodo along the year. It would be nice to have repetition of the same lectures two or three times every year

• Any type of activities can be of value. I simply don't recall receiving any invitations to participate in activities but it doesn't mean I didn't receive any either.

Satisfied” with your IEEE Education Society membership. Please tell us why you feel this

way.

Page 80: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

In the previous question, you indicated that you were not

• It did not prove to be very interesting - as much a comment on me as on the society. Not a good match.

• The only contact I remember with the Society was through the Transactions and requests to review articles from colleagues. I didn't find the content useful to me as an EE professor.

• In general it not fullfuill my expectations

• Question is redundant. See prior responses.

• It is good. But I don't have enough time for it.

• I had no direct affiliation with Education aside from a prefessional interest in current practices.

• Sometimes or rarely available.

• it was not specific enough to me

• It was geared toward higher, higher education and rarely applicable to HS and entry undergrad education. Also most of the material required hight tech equipment or expertice to implement thus not working well in third world situations.

• I explained before, but maybe I should have tried to volunteer to change things. I'll watch out and possibly re-join later again.

Page 81: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

In the previous question, you indicated that you were not (Continued)

• Ilearned thing from the publications.

• It did not meet my needs

• More interested in Communications Engineering.

• as education as a future goal rather than a current endeavor I was never fully engaged in the society.

• Repetitive questions on surveys?

• ????

• Because it is focused only in branches related to the IEEE

• perceived emphasis to be on acdemic level and implementation, lacking pragmatic aspects of the education challenges, e.g. professional development strategies and programs, on-line instruction.

• No information was sent to me via e-mail. That is already the sufficient reason to stop the membership.

• The publications didn't seem particularly relevant. It seems like the whole process would be much better served if there were opportunities for groups of local engineers to join together to help teach youth.

Page 82: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

In the previous question, you indicated that you were not (Continued)

• Educational technology and management is my curent area of interest

• As I said before I expected more topics connected with pedagogics and didactics.

• It was a lack of activities in the Spanish Chapter I didn't like the Trans. on Education

• There was a lot of interesting paper on education

• Not as relevant as it could be

• No problem, just I'm one of those persons who doesn't tick 'extreme' boxes.

• I tried to volunteer for some positions in the society to get involved and I was forgotten about. The scientific content of the publications is week, the society is rather dysfunctional so there was no value in continuing my membership.

• see previous answers

• Agenda not relevant to my job role

• I wanted to see more articles about communications and networking. There were plenty of articles on control for instance.

• Probably it wasn't as relevant as I thought it will be to me

• As I mention before, the Society is too focused on US educational system.

Page 83: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

In the previous question, you indicated that you were not (Continued)

• I never saw any great value in my membership. Rarely did any of the journal articles give me insight into ways to improve my performance.

• I mainly read the transactions. They were ok, but I have seen better.

• Membership did not provide me with the information I need for my engineering education goals. I may reconsider once I have completed my PhD and begin teaching full time.

• I didn't get anything out of it.

• Becaus there were no enough activities

• Money, not what i was expecting from the Society at that price

• Normal, I just a common member

• It is just because I have not received more information on my area of interest (Instructional Technology/Design, Multimedia in Education/Training).

• I have an interest mainly in pre-college,(K-12)education. the IEEE Education Scoiety is mostly concerned with college level education issues.

• I didn't answer "highly satisfied". What's wrong with the software :(

• No special reasons

Page 84: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

In the previous question, you indicated that you were not (Continued)

• I exactly don't remember now, but when I read its publications, perhaps it seems, the constraints faced by very low level educational institutes to keep pace with the educational advancements are generally out of consideration.

• I was highly satisfied with the Society's publications.

• Did not provide a benefit.

• As noted above, my interests differ from most IEEE Education Society members.

• Not enough relevant content

• I think this society could give more services. For example, it could establish a web site with material, courses, exams, tests, bibliography, educational software (free, shareware, paid, etc.).

• see CSS answer

• See previous answers.

• I think that the previous questions are sufficient to answer that question.

• Lack of focus of the society and its services.

• could not see relevance despite my being in the engineering education field -

• I have not enough local activities; no possibilities to visit conferences and to meet colleagues. In my opinion, IEEE Education Society activities are very depend on momey, but global, world moving is to free or low rate education.

Page 85: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

In the previous question, you indicated that you were not (Continued)

• did not utilize anything

• Not of sufficient interest

• Because I work in computer science and software engineering fields and the scope of the Education Society publication is general.

• Because of the reasons mentioned above regarding the publication.

• I was primarily too involved in other activities to give a strong opinion either way.

• ..

• The journal price is high.

• I wound up not needing any of the services - it provided some but not much value for the $$

• See previous comments.

• look, this is irritating. The society is just not relevant to me. period. it is not a question of satisfaction or not!!!!

• The society haven't enough dinamic paper

• My main job is EMC-Engineer and not education. I wanted to concentrate more on my main activity.

Page 86: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

In the previous question, you indicated that you were not (Continued)

• Because the topics treated are very numerous and most of them are not of interest for me

• The publications were too expensive to justify and the Transactions in Education was not relevant to my work.

• I live in the UK, so there was little or no opportunity for me to interact with other members. As I have said, I was disappointed with the Trans on Educ. journal

What could the IEEE Education Society do to make you want to

rejoin?

Page 88: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What could IEEE Education Society do to make you want to rejoin?

• nothing

• I don't know. I think that EE education is a difficult area. Perhaps having more invited papers would make the Transactions more useful.

• wait -

• It would need to be a decision of mine - nothing they could do would affect my choice.

• Sometimes I lectured engineers in the field of ectromagnetic compatibiy. But I have retired from the job of education of univercity-students. students

• have some sort of "sub-chapters" specializing in teaching specific topics/fields

• Change in work situation and more application to low tech situations such as third world countries where high tech equipment and expertise are not needed to implement

• Nothing

• Establishing more intensive links to the e-Learning industry. The industry could learn much more from IEEE, and IEEE would benefit from some "faster, direct feedback". The problem is, that things evolve more rapidly in the outside world. But may be the conferences are much more uptodate, so again, my jugdement may be one-sided. When my working profile is getting more academic again, I will most likely re-join. Looking from outside academia it seems however pretty useless.

Page 89: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What could IEEE Education Society do to make you want to rejoin? (Continued)

• Offer alternative teacher certification programs for people with technical Bachelors degrees and no Education degree who want to teach science and or math.

• Nothing unless I decide to join again.

• provid new topics of interest

• Hard to respond to this question.

• I don't recall seeing much for outsiders who want to break into education which is what I was looking for. May not be your scope but I didn't know where else to look. Other than that I did enjoy many of the publications.

• Nothing

• Be patient until finances allow

• It can't, I am getting out of the education field.

• I will rejoin when the society covers Education in general

• turn my clock back about ten years ...

• I have no idea.

• Give major concession to me.

Page 90: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What could IEEE Education Society do to make you want to rejoin? (Continued)

• They can include more articles describing how to teach different technical areas. I can usually figure out the technical part.

• Try to improve the Trans. on Education Try to improve the Local Chapter (now, there is a Spanish chapter so it's possible that I will rejoin next year)

• Send me a 'prod' (preferable on paper rather than e-mail - there are far too many e-mails!) which might catch me at a receptive moment.

• Change leadership, change the focus, truly invite participation and add some real value to the products and services.

• refocus to the heart of the matter : in education it's not about technology in itself but as a support for education in a broad sense. Normally you do not built TV antennas that can only be used for only one TV channel ? (except in space science)

• Widen focus to further education programmes (UK)

• My decision was based solely on economical reasons. In my opinion IEEE should reconsider prices for developing countries. You can contact governmental offices about average anual income in differnt countries to get better information about this subject.

• Unless I decided to take up some form of teaching

Page 91: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What could IEEE Education Society do to make you want to rejoin? (Continued)

• Broaden its scope and cover different educational system in different countries.

• nothing

• Nothing. I'm going to retire soon, and I really don't need any of their publications.

• N/A, as mentioned my university libraray has the subscription.

• reduced subcription fees

• Nothing at this time.

• a better understanding of what activities, including publications, can involve me in person.

• I continue being fullt-time student

• Charge less money, and give more benefits

• nothing. It was me initiated to try other society

• More time.

• Since I have retired from teaching I have no further need for this,

• free membership

• -

• This is not really a relevant question in my case. The IEEE Edcuation Society is doing a great job. It is just that my interests currently lie elsewhere.

Page 92: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What could IEEE Education Society do to make you want to rejoin? (Continued)

• I don't know...

• Not dependent on

• The decision was not made based on problems with the society.

• Nothing. But I might reconsider if a colleague recommended it, especially if he/she said it helped them in their academic career.

• I'll be renewing my IEEE membership after afew months. In total my bughet is fixed. Some discount/waiving out or promoation may help me rejoin.

• A greater acceptance of community college faculty and a significant increase in the Society's focus on community colleges. Also, projects in which my expertise gained through 32 years of teaching at the community college level might entice me to rejoin.

• Financial support from my employer

• Nothing. ASEE does it all better.

• Probably nothing; it must reflect the interests of the members.

• I am close to retirement and not more interested in this field

• Lower fee, make it free. All engineers should to some extent be interested in educational matters.

Page 93: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What could IEEE Education Society do to make you want to rejoin? (Continued)

• Responded in the previous question. Anyway there is the other side of this story: the economic problems of my country cannot be resolved by the IEEE.

• see CSS answer

• Have more a more relevant publication.

• nothing

• I will periodically try to keep myself aware of its evolution, to check whether I should rejoin in the future.

• more general issues discussed;

• Free membership or lower (how?) fees.

• nothing

• I did not completely agree to suspend my subcription and maybe in next year I would suscribe again. It will depend of the budget I would have.

• Improve the publication method - more rapid publications during the year, allowing me to read some new ideas and researches every month or two.

• Nothing at this point

Page 94: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What could IEEE Education Society do to make you want to rejoin? (Continued)

• ..

• Lower the membership fee and journal charge

• Nothing - my career bent would have to change to the education field again, not likely but possible.

• Restructure the quality of the papers in their transactions.

• not relevant

• I can not answer for this question at this time. Possibly: reduce fee costs, e.g. by printing publications in eastern Europe, where even color ones should be much cheaper.

• As I told you before, the only point is that now I have access to the magazine by means of a institutional subscription to XPLORE.

• Birng more themes concerning EMC.

• more ressources on course contents for example

• I do not exactly. May be to focus on my fields of interest and may be to decrease the membership amount

• Provide opportunities for continuing education at ample pricing that suits currently un-employed

Page 95: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications.

What could IEEE Education Society do to make you want to rejoin? (Continued)

• Reduce subscription rates to the online library.

• I would need to be convinced that IEEE Trans on Education was publishing high quality material on modern learning techniques and not overwhelmingly electronics tools.

• Keep it up! It is usefull! May be it is just the question of adding an additional stream!
