Malaria is a parasite, transmitted from person to person by a mosquito that bites at night. The parasite enters the bloodstream and causes fever, head- aches and other flu-like symptoms. If left untreated, the infection can lead to a coma or even death. Malaria disproportionately affects children and pregnant mothers in Africa. Worldwide, one million people die of malaria every year—mostly in sub- Saharan Africa. 90% of all malaria deaths are in children under five years old. Pregnant women and their unborn children are also especially vulnerable. With simple tools like mosquito nets, effective medicines and safe indoor spraying, many African countries have reduced malaria deaths by more than 50%. By sleeping under a mosquito net, children are protected from the night- time bite of a malarial mosquito. New, inexpensive medications can cure ma- laria. And scientists are working hard to find a vac cine for the disease. YES. By scaling up malaria control interventions like nets and medication, we can end malaria deaths and eliminate the disease. We have a goal of providing universal access to these interventions to everyone at risk in Africa by December 31, 2010. We have the tools and we know they work. But we need your help...
