MAGNETS OBJECTIVES

• To know that some materials are magnetic and others are non-magnetic.

• To know that like poles of a magnet repel while unlike poles of a magnet attract.

ALL ABOUT MAGNETS

Look at the pile of rubbish. Your task is to list which bits (of rubbish) can be picked up with a magnet for recycling.

Demonstrate magnets in slings for attraction/repulsion.

• Prediction: Make a prediction for this practical activity.

MAGNETIC MATERIALS AND MAGNETS

• Distinguish between Magnetic materials and Magnets.

• A magnet is a material or object that produces a magnetic field and is able to attract or repel.

• All magnetic materials are affected by magnetism, but they do not repel like magnets.

Page 10: MAGNETS AND MAGNETIC MATERIALS

PRACTICAL ACTIVITY

• Demonstrate all magnetic materials attracted but only magnets repelled.

• Equipment

• Sample of magnet / non-magnetic materials in sets of 8-10.

• 8-10 magnets

REPULSION TEST FOR MAGNETS

OBJECTIVE

• To understand that repulsion is used to test whether or not an object is a magnet.

Page 12: MAGNETS AND MAGNETIC MATERIALS

LEVELS 5-7 HOMEWORK

• Draw a bar magnet showing north and south poles. Use your diagram to answer the following questions

• Where is the magnetism strongest? Put an X.

• Explain why magnetic effect or magnetism is strongest at point X as shown by your diagram.

• Draw a diagram showing the field lines around a bar magnet. What are magnetic field lines?

Page 13: MAGNETS AND MAGNETIC MATERIALS

LEVELS 3-4 HOMEWORK

• Recognise that both magnets and the Earth have magnetic field lines.

• Draw a diagram showing the field lines around a bar magnet.

• What are magnetic field lines?
