Fasting outside of IslamIt was just another lesson plan about fasting in Islam. However, the students in class five saw the opportunity to extend their knowledge: learning about fasting in other religions.

On the first week, they jumped into creating a KWL chart to share what they already know and want to know about fasting in Islam and

other religions.

The following weeks consisted of them working with groups focusing on the same religion: Hinduism, Christianity and Judaism.

They enjoyed not only presenting their Venn diagram projects

to their class but by being teachers for 15 minutes each.

It is important to let our students learn that some of the practices in Islam can also be found in other religions.

Beyond the lines of Surah Munafiqun

IEC NEWSLETTER

Grade 7 students became familiar with the eleven verses of Surah Munafiqun and their meaning by using their listening, research, and poetry skills.

Students split up into groups to listen to the whole surah on the iPad provided, and then used their textbooks to find information to develop an acrostic poem using the word “Hypocrite” with words and phrases related to the surah.

Each group recited their awesome poems at the end of class and inshaAllah everyone left class with a better understanding of the emphasis against hypocrites as detailed in the Holy Qur’an.

“I want to do this kind of thing again,” said Ayaazhussein Manji.

For the second year in a row, the al-Faraj ziyarat group consisted of a big portion of Orlando zawars; this year there were 72 people. Many Madrasah students were able to go on this journey along with their families.

For most of the Zawars, this was their first time visiting Iraq. The Faraj Orlando group spent approximately two weeks staying in Najaf, Kerbala, and Kadhmain. The zawars enjoyed each and every stop they went on with Sheikh Jaffer Ladak as the speaker to help hone in on the spiritual aspect of the journey. Just as the group last year went to visit the orphanage, the group this year was also able to have this wonderful experience.

They were able to play sports, build Lego houses, and paint with the children. These zawars were also able to visit poor neighborhoods to donate items to families. This first time event for the Faraj Orlando group was a life changing event that allowed the members to not only raise money to help poor, but see how they live for themselves. They were also met Ayatullah Sistani.

From Najaf, they moved on to Kerbala where they were able visit Imam Hussain, Hazrat Abbas, and the other martyrs of this holy land. They were also able to meet Ayatullah Seyyid Muderrisi here. After leaving Kerbala, they spent a day in Kadhmain where they were able to perform the ziyarat for the seventh and eighth Imams, Imam Musa ibn-Kazim and Imam Muhammed at-Taqi.Overall, the zawars had a great trip and experience in Iraq. May Allah accept their duas.
