Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months before expiry date. With a valid passport and a return flight ticket, you can easily obtain a visa at Antananarivo airport. No photographs are required.

MoneyAriary (AR) is the local currency in Madagascar, and we recommend that you change money into Ariary on arrival. The airport banks are always open at each international flight arrival, and their rates are similar to the banks in town. Please note that only EUR, USD & GBP can be exchanged. Credit cards (Visa only) are occasionally accepted in large hotels and restaurants, mainly in the city and larger tourist destinations such as Nosy Be. Travellers Cheques are not recommended.

Health and HygienePlease be aware that Madagascar is a Malaria area. We recommend you bring a high factor sunscreen to avoid sunburn as the sun in Madagascar can be very harsh.

Time DifferenceAdjust your clock upon arrival at the airport: add 2 hours during summertime and 3 hours during wintertime to GMT.

Weather and SeasonsOnly two seasons exist in Madagascar: dry and wet season. Wet season lasts in most areas for 5 months (December to April). In eastern Madagascar it rains quite often all year long, whereas it rarely rains in western Madagascar.

On the central highlands, winter nights can drop to around freezing point. Please bring warm clothes if you travel to central Madagascar between May and September. From November to March, it is hot in southern and western Madagascar. The temperature in the coastal regions is generally higher than that in inland Antananarivo.

AccommodationMadagascar is a destination still untouched by mass tourism. This means that much of the accommodation is more basic than other countries such as Mauritius or the Seychelles. Luxury (4*) accommodation is available in the more travelled areas such as Nosy Be and Antananarivo, but these still fall short of the western world’s standards. Please be prepared for this, and consider this as part of the rustic charm of Madagascar.

Sakatia IslandSituated near Nosy Be, Sakatia Island is a tropical paradise and a true breakaway. With no roads or motor vehicles but plenty of foot paths, you can wander at leisure and explore the beauty of the island. It offers typically unspoilt tropical fauna and flora and has a population of only 300. The island is fringed by spectacular coral reefs to be enjoyed by the snorkeller or scuba diver alike.

Radama ArchipelagoLocated 90km south west of Nosy Be, the Radama Archipelago consists of four islands, of which Kalakajour is the most northern and the smallest. It is here that Jenman Madagascar Island Safaris has built Turtle Bay Camp – a privately owned fishing base, which is home to fish eagles, beautiful coral beds, and spectacular fishing. Just 3km off the beach you will find a continental drop off with abundant Tuna, Barracuda, Sailfish, and Giant Kingfish.

NOSY BE AND SURROUNDING ISLANDS

Russian Bay - A beautiful and remote place opposite Nosy Be. Enjoy the fantastic marine life for snorkelling and fishing, and the abundant birdlife, reptiles and lemurs.

Nosy Iranja - Nosy Iranja is a peaceful and remote island with crystal clear waters, good fishing, wonderful walks and fantastic opportunities to sea kayak and explore on foot.

Mahalina - here we relax in the beautiful surroundings, or kayak up the mangrove swamps. The area is great for snorkelling, fishing and spear-fishing.

We may use A-frame bungalows on Mahalina, instead of camping.

Lokobie Reserve - a protected reserve, Lokobie offers wildlife galore with the likelihood of you spotting several lemur species and chameleons.

Nosy Tanikely - a marine reserve teeming with underwater flora and fauna, allows us the chance for some superb snorkelling in warm waters with great visibility.

Nosy Komba - an island with quaint villages, craft markets and famed for its habituated lemurs, who may take a jump onto your shoulders!

Day 8 sees us returning to Nosy Be port, where you will catch your flight home, or stay on for a few days at your leisure.

MADAGASCAR DHOW CAMPING TRIPEnjoy 8 days of the island hopping lifestyle in Jenman’s own exclusive-use dhow, and camp out on peaceful, un-spoilt beaches around the Nosy Be archipelago.

Arriving at the airport of Nosy Be, you will be met and transferred to your local guest house for the evening. The following morning we set sail for the islands on our Dhow, visiting some of the following islands, and camping on their shores for the next 6 nights.

15km from the north-western coast of Madagascar lies the large island of Nosy Be. Here you can still discover a small piece of paradise, despite its growing tourism industry. Nosy Be offers travellers a taste of everything Madagascan, such as lemurs and chameleons, local rum and delicious seafood, beaches and activities and a warm inviting ocean. Accommodation options are varied also, and most will find something suitable. Two of Madagascar’s most exclusive resorts (Nosy Iranja, and Tsarabanjina) are accessible from Nosy Be.

A visit to Nosy Be does not restrict you to one destination, as it is part of an Archipelago, with many smaller islands surrounding it. Some of our favourites include Nosy Tanikely – a marine reserve offering excellent snorkelling in crystal clear water, Nosy Komba, where you can have a lemur jump on your shoulder, and Nosy Sakatia, where you can snorkel, dive, hike and relax away from the crowds of the mainland.

Climb up Mount Passot (350m) and you will be able to see Nosy Be in all its beauty: its jagged coasts, the numerous bays and lovely coves, the deserted beaches and the sparkling water.

Canal de PangalanesA series of lakes linked by canals transport you from Manambato to Tamatave on a small motor boat. Stopping for the night at Lake Ampitabe affords you the opportunity to visit the Palmarium reserve with good trails and friendly lemurs.

The peaceful boat journey takes you past local scenes of fishermen checking their nets and children playing in the canals.

Masoala peninsula and Nosy MangabeThese areas are leading destinations for eco-tourists due to the diverse areas of virgin rainforest harbouring the greatest number of unclassified species. Unfortunately they are difficult to access, have very wet weather and are only for the most adventurous traveller.

Sainte Marie IslandThe island of Sainte Marie is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and coral reefs. Its dense vegetation and the difficulty of navigating the lagoons which surround it made it an ideal base for pirates and, later a colony for convicts. Today the island is a vacation paradise. It has the world’s only pirates’ cemetery and visitors can walk among cashew and cinnamon trees, snorkel from the offshore islet or dive from one of the beautiful sandbanks. The island is less touristy than other resort islands of Madagascar, making it an ideal location to relax and enjoy the sunshine. From July to September, humpback whales can be seen playing in the ocean and breaching out of the sea in the narrow canal that separates the island from the mainland. They can be seen everywhere from the island but it is best to take a whale watching cruise and get an up-close look at these magnificent grey giants.

WestThe west of Madagascar is mostly dry with deciduous forests, and contains the famous Tsingy and several National Parks.

Anjohibe CavesOnly accessible by 4x4 in the dry season, the caves and natural swimming pool are 82km north-east of Mahajanga. The caves have 2km of passages and are full of stalactites, stalagmites and bats, whilst the lower of the two waterfalls occasionally accommodate the local crocodiles.

AnjajavySituated 120km north of Mahajanga, the luxury Anjajavy hotel offers secluded beaches and a large natural reserve with a magnitude of wildlife.

Tsingy de Bemaraha National ParkA UNESCO World Heritage site, this park has fabulous scenery, Tsingy and plenty of wildlife.

Kirindy ReserveAn excellent and rewarding reserve with mongoose, jumping rats, and a good place to see Fossa.

SouthThe south of Madagascar is the most exotic, with spiny forests, abundant wildlife and excellent beaches and coral reefs.

Isalo National ParkIsalo is an excellent hiking park, with several established circuits. A huge attraction is the sandstone rocks which are cut by deep canyons and have eroded into unusual shapes, as well as the rare endemic plants and the plentiful lemurs.

Fort Dauphin, Berenty Reserve and Andohahela Special ReserveFort Dauphin has a backdrop of green mountains flowing into a deep blue sea, and it is the base for Berenty Reserve and Andohahela Special Reserve. Berenty Reserve is world famous for its population of ring-tailed and sifakas (dancing lemurs), and offers the best opportunity in Madagascar for wildlife viewing. Birdwatching is also rewarding here, and the excellent forest trails make the reserve a safe and easy place to explore. Andohahela contains both rainforest and spiny forest, but this reserve is not as easily accessible as Berenty, requiring a 4x4 vehicle, and is more for the committed adventurer.

Lake Tsimanampetsotsa National ParkThe large shallow soda lake is the highlight of this National park, which has some striking spiny forest, and baobabs, and most famously, the lake itself, which is renowned for its waterfowl, notably flamingos and the Madagascar plover.

Beza-Mahafaly Special ReserveNot only does this reserve contain both spiny and riverine forest, with habituated ring-tailed lemurs and sifakas lemurs, but it is also home to the fossa – Madagascar’s largest carnivore.
