Sir, Recently a new bus shelter was installed on Venkatanarayana Road (opposite TTDtemple) out of the constituency development fund.

Only one bus (route No 12C) whose frequency is very less halts at this stop. Hardly doesanyone use this stop. The new shelter has been constructed adjacent to the existing bus shelterwhich has an illuminated sign board displaying a political slogan “Rajiv Gandhi Aawaz Yojana”.

On the contrary, at the busy bus stop on North Usman Road (opposite Nathella showroom),there is no shelter. Many buses stop here and the waiting commuters are forced to brave theheat and the rain. The bus stop is just before Usman Road flyover where lots of commuterswait to board buses to Adyar and Tiruvanmiyur.

It is strange to note that bus shelter is added where one already exists and there is no shelterwhere it is necessary.

I appeal to T. Nagar MLA V. P. Kalairajan to sanction funds to immediately erect a bus shelterat the latter stop for the benefit of the commuters and to avoid injudicious welfare measuresat least in the future. – M.S. Chandrasekaran, Flat 7, Rams Apartments, 20 BagavandhamStreet, T. Nagar. Ph: 99401 29404.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORAppeal to T. Nagar MLA for bus stop shelter

Sir, Corporation has installed new stain-less steel name boards displaying streetnames in both Tamil and English all overChennai, including T. Nagar andMambalam.

However, on a number of these boards, the street names have either been writtenincorrectly or have spelling mistakes.

For example, the nameof ‘Soundararajan Street’, T. Nagar, hasbeen wrongly written as ‘SoundarajanStreet’ (both in English and Tamil).

I request the concerned authorities toinspect all the name boards and rectify themistakes where necessary. – A.V.Ramanathan, 32/1, Soundara RajanStreet, T. Nagar.

Spelling mistakes in street name boards

Sir, I parked my car on Maharajapuram Santhanam Salai (Griffith Road, T. Nagar) a coupleof times last week.

On both the occasions, the parking attendant demanded Rs. 20 as parking fee.I confronted him saying that the fee is only Rs. 5 for the first 6 hours and Rs. 20 only more

than 6 hours and up to 24 hours. He said that he had exhausted the Rs. 5 receipt and only had the Rs. 20 receipt. He was

however willing to collect Rs. 10 without issuing a receipt.Since it happened with me on multiple occasions, it was clear that it was a deliberately ploy

employed to overcharge the public.I appeal to Chennai Corporation to put up notice boards mentioning the approved parking

fees and take stringent action against excess collection. – M.S. Chandrasekaran, T. Nagar.

Overcharging ploy by parking attendant

Sir, For the residents of Brindavan Street, Brindavan Street Extension, Umapathy Streetand other nearby streets, the nearest post located in Postal Colony, West Mambalam, is quitea distance away, especially for senior citizens like me.

The post office which was located on Varadappan Street within walking distance was closedmany years ago.

If it is not viable to open another post office nearby, I request the authorities to at least runa mobile post office at a regular frequency for the benefit of the residents. The mobile post officecan also be outsourced to an agency.

I hope the authorities take heed to my request. – S. Krishnamoorthy, Mathangi Flats,27/4 Brindavan Street Extension, West Mambalam.

Appeal for mobile post office.

Sir, The remains of a largeavenue tree on P.T. Rajan Salaioutside our gate that was cutdown has damaged the pave-ment, in turn causing difficultyin accessing our house. It isalso causing inconvenience topedestrians

The tree was cut a year agoafter it toppled during heavyrains. We have since then in-formed Chennai Corporationofficials a number of times butthey have not taken any reme-dial measures.

The issue was also high-lighted in a popular Tamil daily, but to no effect. I am approach-ing you as the last resort.

I hope the civic authorities

take immediate action to remove the tree and re-lay thepavement. – P. Nagarajan, 13/6, P.T. Rajan Saalai, K.K.Nagar

Remains of avenue tree obstructs pavement

11th Avenue encroached by roadside vendorsSir, 11th Avenue (Ashok Nagar) is a busy road through which thousands of vehicles pass daily

thanks to one-way traffic on a stretch of this road. The pavements and road margins of this road have been encroached upon by roadside vendors

and eateries causing hardship to nearby residents, motorists and pedestrians. Vendors litterthe area and dump waste into the storm water channels. Pedestrians are forced to walk on theroad, thereby risking their lives. I appeal to Chennai Corporation officials to take immediateaction and evict the encroachments. – N.K. TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 84The Making of ‘Meera’ (1945)

The Indian film musical classic ‘Meera’ (1945), produced byChandraprabha Cinetone and directed by Ellis R. Dungan, isone of the most memorable milestone movies in the history ofIndian Cinema. Even after nearly seventy years, this film isvividly etched in public memoryand its songs and M. S.Subbulakshmi as Meeraare evergreen in the minds, hearts andsouls of Indians, especially in the south of Vindhyas.

With MSS in the lead role, others in the cast were ChittoorV. Nagaiah (as King Rana, Meera’s husband), K. R. Chellam,K. Sarangapani, T. S. Balaiah, Serukalathur Sama, T. S.Durairaj, ‘Appa’ K. Duraiswami, ‘Baby’ Radha (MSS’s step-daughter, now Radha Viswanathan), ‘Baby’ Kamala, and, in aminor role, lost behind a white bushy beard, turban and all, M.G. Ramachandran!

Not many are aware that the noted singing-star fromKarnataka, C. Honnappa Bhagavathar was the first choice toplay King Rana. On second thoughts V. Nagaiah was broughton board.

(Honnappa Bhagavathar spoke to this writer about his lifeand career in films on audiotape for two days during November1990 at his residence in Bangalore, in spite of his poor healthand recent surgery. It was part of the Aural Film HistoryProject in which this writer was deeply involved for NationalFilm Archive of India (NFAI), Pune. “I had met Sadasivam(MSS’s husband) and, after discussions, he told me that hewould make arrangements for an advance payment and agree-ment, but I never heard from him again! I was more thansurprised when I heard that Nagaiah was booked for that role.Of course I was disappointed. It is a rare honour to act withM.S.S., is it not?” he said in his Kannada-tinted Tamil.)

A Tamil film star of the 1940s, he came into prominence afterM. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar was arrested in December1944 for his alleged involvement in the sensationalLakshmikantham Murder Case. MKT suffered a 30-month jailterm, which effectively ruined his career and life. HonnappaBhagavathar passed away some years ago.

According to the director of the film, Ellis R. Dungan, Nagaiahwas his choice. “Somebody suggested P. U. Chinnappa, but Irejected him as he was uncouth and did not have the regalpresence needed for that role. I recommended Nagaiah, andRandor, you will agree with me, he proved the right choice fora Rajput king!”, Dungan told this writer during a long chat in LosAngeles. Lyrics were by Papanasam Sivan and Kalki, and S.V. Venkataraman was the music director. ThuraiyurRajagopala Sarma also worked in the music department.

‘Meera’ was a musical feast with MSS singing almost all thesongs. Many songs became hits and the most famous of themall, “Kaatriniley Varum Geetham” (lyric-Kalki) is an immortalmelody of Indian Cinema. Its tune and melody were taken froma song by the famous Bengali singer, Juthika Roy, whosegramophone records were very popular in south India in thoseyears. The original Bengali song was a favourite of Kalki’s whohummed it often and not just in the bathroom! He suggested thetune to S. V. Venkataraman and the timeless, ageless song wasborn. Indeed, the first line became a metaphor in the Tamillanguage.

Some critics and historians however are of the firm opinionthat the story of Meerabai is only a folk tale and not factuallyor historically true.

There was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna named Meerabaiwho composed the bhajans, but she was not married to theRajput King of Chittoor. And she was not a contemporary ofAkbar the Great. No Rajput king of the days of Akbar and hisfavourite court musician, the celebrated Tansen, had such aqueen called Meerabai. Well, that’s what serious historianssay! (To be continued)

NO HOLDS BARRED

TEA IS A TEASER Friend Narendra Modi and I share a liking for good tea which

he, as a boy, did not drink in gallonsbut vendedto keep the hungrywolf from the door.

As a boy, all I had to do was to shout “Kunhirama, a glassof yourheavenly tea” and, in a trice, Kunhiraman would appear from hisfamous shop next to my one acre compound with a couple ofglasses of the heavenly brew and launch me on my chores as a fifthclass student, energising me to wend my way to the schoolthrough paddy fields and unpaved bullock cart tracks.

Kunhiraman’sdosa and chutney and of course his inimitabletea drew people from afar.During the Second WorldWar years, the young military men on leave made his tea shopthe centralstage for narrating their exploits in the war, all the while drinkinghis magnificent brew.

Some of the swillers paid him but many ran up ‘accounts’ which,at the end of the war, remained unaccounted. He loved tea and, like our hero Modi, loved to give.

Only after we landed in Madras which my parents thought wasbest for our educationdid we taste ‘degree coffee’ which is greatbutI, like friend Modi, loved the Kunhiraman brew.

In later years, after a day in High Court listening toall kinds ofcrap and speaking words of Solomonic wisdom, on the way back,I used to make it a ritual to stop at a ‘Nair Tea Stall’ to cap a goodday in thecompany of my good friend Raghupathy who succeededme as Government Pleader. The tea, especially of the unostenta-tious Nair Tea Stallwas Kunhiramanesqe.

Modi, you havegood taste! Recommend it to Amma as a nationalmessage.
