FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY…

Thanksgiving and Hanukah

For the first time in a very long time we will have the opportunity to eat pota-

to latkes as a side dish at our Thanksgiving

dinner! Hanukah begins at sunset the day before

Thanksgiving. Hanukah comes early sometimes –

maybe the beginning of December – but most of us do

not recall it ever beginning on Thanksgiving!

The Jewish calendar is a combination of a solar and

lunar system. We celebrate the new Jewish month eve-

ry month, which is marked by the new moon, yet we

celebrate holidays according to the season. If the Jew-

ish calendar were purely lunar it would be 11 days

short (354 days vs. 365). After a few years, Sukkot, the

Fall harvest festival would be celebrated in the winter

which just wouldn’t make sense. The rabbis knew this

2,000 years ago and developed a mathematical formula

to ensure that the Jewish holidays matched the season

and made other necessary adjustments (e.g. Yom Kip-

pur can never be on a Friday or Sunday). This year

then is the earliest the Jewish holidays will ever be.

Since Hanukah coincides with Thanksgiving we will

be able to experience added meaning to our holidays.

Both holidays focus on family with a large gathering

around the table and both focus on reasons to be thank-

ful. Not only do we remember the Maccabees’ victory

over Greek tyranny and persecution we also remember

how fortunate we are to live in America – the bastion

of freedom and democracy.

As you light the menorah next to the turkey, take a moment to express gratitude for family and friends.

Think about how fortunate we are to live in America

and think about our connection to American and Jewish

values. May the light of the candles and celebration of

Thanksgiving bring extra meaning and fulfillment to

our lives.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Hanukah!

FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Welcome to November at Shaare Tefila. I un-

derstand that the predictions are for quite a snow-

filled winter; so before the weather arrives, we

should all take the opportunity to get out one last

time to meet our friends and fellow congregants

for some fun-filled programs and events.

This month we will be sharing our personal talents with each

other at “Shaare Tefila’s Got Talent” on Saturday, November 16.

We have spent considerable time and effort searching through au-

dition tapes and performances, and have put together a great pro-

gram for you. The show will be followed by dinner, so please

make sure to make your reservations early with Jill Goldwater in

the Synagogue office. And since it’s November, it must also be

Thanksgiving. But this year our Thanksgiving holidays will be

supplemented by an added Jewish flair. The first night of Hanukah

is Wednesday, November 27. I can’t think of anything I would

rather have to follow a huge turkey dinner than some latkes and

apple sauce. So eat up, everyone ,and enjoy. And once again we

will also be celebrating our interfaith Thanksgiving Service this

year on Tuesday, November 26 at 7:30. I look forward to seeing

everyone there.

On Sunday, November 3, we will be holding a joint program

with several area congregations entitled “Jewish University for a

Day.” This event is designed to be an academic adult study pro-

gram for those interested in Jewish learning. You can join your

contemporaries and scholars from The Jewish Theological Semi-

nary in New York City to learn about Jewish Studies typically

found only at the university level.

Our own Shabbat services this month are quite compelling as

well. Please join the Congregation as we celebrate Rachel Becker

becoming a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday November 9. The night be-

fore, on November 8, please also join Cantor Wendi when she re-

sumes her Shabbat Alive program that gets rave reviews by all who

attend. And on Saturday, November 16, be sure to join Rabbi Lay-

man when he will conduct his always-stimulating Taste of Shabbat

in Study sessions at 11:00 AM following our services.

There is a program that I have been getting a tremendous benefit

from over the last several weeks. The program entitled

and we have thus far covered items such as elder law and housing

SISTERHOOD

"Oh What A Night" . . . . Sounds like

a song from the Four Seasons, but I am

referring to our Paid Up Membership

Dinner event held on October 21. Ku-

dos to Deborah Letow for planning

and organizing such a wonderful evening enjoyed by over

100 who attended. Everyone feasted on a fabulous dinner

prepared by Debbie Yedlin, Vivienne Auerbach and their

committee. Not sure what I liked better - dinner or des-

sert! The evening was capped off by all the vendors coor-

dinated by Sharon Zitomer, who gave us ample opportuni-

ty to get a jump start on our Hanukah shopping. There was

certainly something for everyone. If that wasn't enough,

thanks go to our Men's Club for their hard work in helping

to prepare, set up, serve and clean up. Thanks to our new

members who came and to our seasoned members too as

the evening would not have been the success it was without

YOU!

The saying goes, "it takes a village" and this is true for us

too. There were so many women who helped behind the

scenes, shopping, cooking, preparing that there are too

many to name but we know who you are and appreciate all

that you did.

If you were not able to attend the dinner, you can still

send your dues to Elaine Stein. Our Patron membership

has grown and we have surpassed that dues category for all

the years we have been offering this type of member-

ship. We have many programs coming up including our

Rosh Chodesh group on November 2, Make-One-Take-

One on November 10 and a board meeting on November

11.

November is a busy month with Thanksgiving and Hanu-

kah so please remember to use scrip for all of your holiday

shopping needs.

Do you know …? Al Kliman’s youngest granddaughter, Jessica Kliman, will celebrate her bat mitzvah on November 9. For those of you who know Al’s son, Stuart, Jessi-ca is his daughter. The entire family will head to Cancun in December to celebrate Al’s 80th birthday,

Jessica’s bat mitzvah, and Iris’ wedding. Max Kantzer & Patricia Greene have just returned from a trip to Canada. Ira & Ethel Levine celebrated their 42nd anniversary by going on a cruise to the Black Sea with Leon & Anita Green. The quartet visited sites in Greece, the Ukraine, Bulgaria, Rumania, Turkey and Italy and enjoyed a companionable three weeks of fun-filled adven-tures. They're thrilled to be retired and are making excellent use of their days! Ira & Ethel Levine are very pleased and proud to welcome their daughter, Rachel, back to the States. She was studying for her Master's in Public Policy at the University of Leeds, England. Now she is home again, looking for a job which will utilize her newly-learned skills. Dr Sue (Mrs. Sidney) Schwartz has published another book! The new book, A Love Like No Other, is a compilation of stories written by grandmothers about their grandchildren who have special needs. Steve & Holly Schotz are back from a fabulous trip to Italy. Ask them about it.

Have you bought scrip in 2013 yet?

Did you know that from

Jan 1 to Sep 15, 2013

76 family units bought scrip at Shaare Tefila:

that is $101,085.00 worth of scrip for groceries,

medicines etc

Of that amount, 5 % ,or $5054.25 has gone to

Shaare Tefila

If more members bought scrip, more dollars

would go to Shaare Tefila!

In case you don’t know how it works:

You write a check for $20, $40, $50, $100 or more to

Shaare Tefila Sisterhood.

In return you will receive the same amount in scrip (gift

cards or certificates) for the grocery store of your choice.

No extra cost to you!

Shaare Tefila receives 5% back on your purchase.

Which stores accept scrip?

Giant

KosherMart (Moti’s Market)

HMart

Shoppers Food

Shalom Kosher

Lotte Plaza

ShopRite

Where to get scrip? Besides at the ST office,

call, also for home deliveries:

Barbara Fink (301) 438-3149

Judy Beiser (301) 593-6151

Rita Rubinstein (301) 816-9686

Adriana Sandler (301) 871-1164 (also at morning and

evening minyan)

The Scrip Committee is looking forward to contacting all

our members who have not bought this year yet, to see if

they would like to participate in this worthwhile program.

Your purchase of even a small amount of scrip on

a monthly basis will greatly impact and increase

funds for Shaare Tefila. Thank you!

Together we do make a difference! Submitted By Barbara Fink

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Please join us in congratulating Carol Nove,

our volunteer of the month! Carol co-chairs

the kitchen committee and spends time each

month supervising what goes on in the kitchen,

making sure it stays kosher, purchasing food

for kiddush and other events. In addition, she

looks for ways to reduce kiddush prices, while

enhancing the offerings. Carol was also head

of the Challah Club for the last two years.

”Like anyone else who volunteers, I get a lot

of personal satisfaction from giving back,”

says Carol. “However, volunteering at Shaare Tefila is particularly

meaningful to me as I have come to consider many of the Shaare Tefila

family to be my extended family. Thus, my volunteer work at Shaare

Tefila is my way of giving back to my Shaare Tefila family.”

Thank you Carol!!!

(From P.1) At the remaining two sessions on November 17 and 24

we will have presentations on medical aspects of aging and then on

the religious considerations. I urge you to consider attending this

program, if not for you personally, then for the elderly family and

friends in your life.

And if by chance the snows come early this year, from the com-

fort of your own home you can enjoy some quite relevant videos

and speech texts from at the Centennial convention from USCJ

which took place this October in Baltimore. These can be found at

www.USCJ100.org and through the YouTube link on the site. I

want to especially thank our Shaare members who were able to

attend on our behalf and for bringing new thoughts on Conserva-

tive synagogue achievement back to our congregation.

I look forward to seeing you all in Shul,

David Ronis

The Building Blocks of Learning

Children love to build and it seems that it was always so. In

his writings, Plato (429-347 b.c.e) mentions children construct-

ing imaginative buildings. The citations continue right up

through the current day, without a lapse. The natural world provides a pleth-

ora of materials that can be used for building: stones, twigs, vines, sand,

leaves all can be used as building blocks. And these were the currency of

children’s construction until fairly recently.

But one hundred years ago, Caroline Pratt created her own set of blocks.

They were modeled after blocks that Friedrich Frobel, the originator of Kin-

dergarten education, designed. He designed a set of 8

blocks, sized ½ by 1 by 2 inches, or a 1:2:4 ratio. The

blocks, called unit blocks because of the unit-based

measurements of halves, doubles and quadruples,

combined with columns, ramps, curves and other

specialty shapes that still adhered to the unit measure, lay the foundation for

basic math and geometry concepts. They were a huge hit and the ratio al-

lowed them to be easily used for some of the basic building steps: stacking,

bridging gaps, creating cubes, enclosing spaces and, of course, knocking it all

down and doing it again. But they were too small for younger children to use

successfully and safely.

One of his followers, Patty Hill (parenthetically, the composer with her

sister, of the song that became “Happy Birthday to You”), created her own

set of blocks almost 20 times larger. These blocks required cooperation

among children to handle the larger size. Caroline Pratt chose a middle

ground. Her blocks, are larger than Frobel’s blocks, at 5 ½ by 2 ¾ by 1 3/8,

but small and lightweight enough for children to handle on their own or use

to collaborate with others. They became a standard classroom material and

have remained so ever since.

Pratt was an educator who had received

woodworking training in Sweden. She devel-

oped her blocks for her experimental classroom

in New York City. Having observed the natural

interest of children to explore their world, she

designed wood figures of family members and

community workers to accompany the blocks.

The use of blocks and associated materials as a social, intellectual and aes-

thetic learning tool still resonates today.

Educators cite a laundry list of benefits that children derive from playing

with unit blocks. Cooperative building develops language and social skills.

Balance and collapse enhance hand-eye coordination and teach the concept

of gravity. Ramps and columns can make simple levers and fulcrums, intro-

ducing simple machines.

Children refer to books as references when they build, design signs, write

descriptions and dictate stories to expand their literacy skills.

So celebrate the centennial of the unit block.

Children will tell you they are just playing, but,

thanks to Caroline Pratt, we know they are do-

ing so much more.

Beth Adler, Early Education Director

CHAVAYA:

This month we celebrate both Hanukah and

Thanksgiving. Students wonder how this hap-

pened when Hanukah is “supposed” to be in De-

cember. Parents refer to the Jewish Holidays as being

“early” this year. In fact, Chanukah begins on the 25th day

of the Hebrew month of Kislev, exactly where it belongs.

Comments such as these reveal that learning about the Jew-

ish calendar is necessary and relevant. Our Chavaya retreat

in early November will provide that much needed opportuni-

ty. We will take a close look at the Jewish calendar and ex-

plore how the Holidays and Hebrew months fit together.

Some of our questions are listed below:

What are the names of the Hebrew Months?

When are the Holidays?

What does the Torah tell us about observing Holidays at

specific times?

Is there a Hebrew leap year? We add a whole month?

How does that work?

What exactly is Rosh Chodesh and how is it observed?

In ancient times how did they keep track of time?

Why do Jewish holidays start the night before?

We will learn about where we currently are on the

Jewish calendar, what month our Hebrew birthdays are in,

which other Chavaya students/teachers we share with them.

It is fortuitous timing that the night of our retreat, daylight

savings time ends, so not only do we have an extra hour, we

also will be able to tie in that as well.

One big project for our retreat is to produce a Jewish Calen-

dar “Map” for our school, with each student and teacher rep-

resented. All are invited downstairs to view it after the re-

treat.

In addition to our learning component, our retreat promises

to be fun as well! We will spend time together in long con-

versations, playing games, singing with Cantor Wendi.

There will be smores, a campfire, and hiking in the woods,

too. The retreat was purposely scheduled for after Shabbat

so there are no restrictions on activities.

Eating meals at the retreat will enable us to recite the Birkat

HaMazon several times together. This supports another

goal for this year, our Birkat HaMazon project. Each

Chavaya student will make a personalized birkat booklet

and will recite the first paragraph comfortably by the end of

the year. Older students are expected to do more. Each

week the Birkat is recited together after eating Challah for

snack. Skype Hebrew tutors spend time reviewing it each

week. As future Jewish leaders, our students need to be

knowledgeable and competent in many areas of Jewish prac-

tice. Our Birkat initiative is one step in helping them arrive

at that destination.

SHAARE TEFILA YOUTH

GROUPS ROCK!

NEARING 100% REGISTRATION!

We are off to a great start this year, with

thirty Shaare Tefila youth already registered

to participate in one of our three great youth group pro-

grams: Bonim (K-2nd grade); Machar (3rd-5th grade); and

our newest group, Kadima (6th through 8th grade). There is

still time to join in all of the fun. We welcome those affiliat-

ed with Shaare Tefila, as well as age appropriate youth from

outside of the Shaare Tefila community.

On October 20th, Bonim and Machar Youth went to Larri-

land Farm for a hayride and apple picking, and then made

apple pies on-site. Kadima youth were jumping, and I mean

literally, at Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park. Everyone

had a great time and our opening programs were a big suc-

cess!

A big welcome to our new Kadima advisors, Chloe

Hochrad and Daniel Grosberg, who come directly from our

own Shaare Tefila family! Chloe and Daniel, who are en-

gaged to be married, are so excited to continue their posi-

tive youth group experience as the Kadima advisors here at

Shaare Tefila. They were both in Kadima, USY, and BBYO

and bring a great deal of experience and enthusiasm to their

new positions as co-advisors. We also welcome Ali Schu-

macher, a senior from the University of Maryland, where she

is majoring in business. Ali really is a "macher" when it

comes to Jewish involvement on campus where she is an

active leader in Maryland Hillel and the Vice President of

the Jewish Student Union.

Coming up on Sunday, November 17th, Bonim and

Machar groups will be going to a Bowling and Pizza Party at

White Oak Bowling Lanes. Kadima Youth won't want to

miss their November program which is a Latke Lock-

In. What is a Latke Lock-In?? On Saturday, November

16th, join your families for the Chanukah Talent Show and

Dinner and then stay for a special Kadima youth group pro-

gram, beginning at 9:30 pm and ending at 9:30 am. Late

night activities, games, treats, a few surprises, and a sleep

over will make this an excellent time for group bonding!

Look for more information on youth group activities in the

Daf, Web, Shofar, Group E-mails, and fliers at syna-

gogue. In the meantime make sure to put the upcoming

Youth Group dates on your calendars.
