One winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace is Betty Williams. She witnessed an act of hatred and began collecting signatures on a petition for peace. She collected 6 000 signatures and then led a peaceful protest march of 10 000 people. She led a second peaceful protest march one week later of 35 000 people. She became the co-founder of the Ireland Peace Movement. Her act of peace has changed many lives.

In the Base Ten System you use ten symbols called digits. These digits are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. When you write numbers in the base tensystemeachofthedigitshasaspecificvalue.Thisvalueisdetermined by its position or “place” in the number. That is why you call it a Place Value System. When you write a number using the numerals 0 through 9 it is called standard form.

When you write larger numbers like this, leave a blank space in between each group of 3 digits. A single space is placed between these groups to identify the thousands and millions. Beginning with the digit in the ones place, you count 3 places and leave a space before writing the next 3 numbers.

Example 2

Write 2347564 in standard form.

You would begin with the digit in the ones place, which is the number 4.

Start at the far right and count three places to the left.

The Pattern of Place Positions

You may have noticed a pattern in Example 1 that is based on the number 10. Each of the places has a value that is 10 times the value of the number to the right of it. An example would be that 100 is 10 times as much as 10.

As you can see from the values that go with each place, starting on the right with 1, you simply multiply by 10 to get the value of the next position.

1. Mix the card sets and place them face down in a stack. Draw three cards and place them in random order.

Earth Hour: Global Initiative to Cut Power Consumption

Tomorrow evening Daksha Singh is going to take a walk. At 8 p.m., this youngstudent and budding business leader will turn off all of the energy eatingnon-essential appliances in his family’s home in suburban Calgary.Every computer, TV, and clock radio will go dark for an hour. Mr. Singh says heplans to “go for a walk” during that time.

Even at his young age, Mr. Singh is already a student school trustee and nomineefor the Alberta Green Award. He is one of more than 240,000 people and 17,000businesses all over the planet who will take part in Earth Hour. This initiative iscalling for the reduction of power usage for 60 minutes.
