Fordecades, SKF Lubrication Systems Germany AG has manufacturedcylinderlu-bricationsystemsforlarge2-strokecross-headdieselengines.Speciallydevelopedlubepumpsforuseinconjunctionwithso-calledaccumulatorsensureefficient,load-depen-dentlubricationofthecylinders.

InadditiontotheexistingCLU3systemwithitssystem-relatedadvantages,suchashighreliability,easeofoperationandsimplemain-tenance,thefullyelectronicallycontrolledCLU4systemwasdeveloped.TheaimoftheCLU4developmentwastobringoilcon-sumptionevenmoreintolinewiththemainloadfactorsandoperatingconditions.

Themainfactorsincludetheenginespeed,load,startingandrunning-instatusetc.Moreover,attentionisalsopaidtothefuelandthelubricantcomposition.

AftertheMasterControlUnitevaluatestheloadfactors,itoptimizesthecyclerateandmeteringinstant.Withanoptimalsystemdesignandadjustment,itispossibletocutoilconsumptionevenmoretoroughly0.8g/kWh(0.5g/BHPh),thusminimizingtheuseofvaluableresources.

ThenewlydevelopedCLU4electroniccylin-derlubricationsystemdoesthiswiththehelpofthelatestcontrolelectronics.Thankstoasmartcombination,withspecialquillsinthewallofthecylinder,itispossibletoweteverypointonthemovingpistons,e.g.theringpa-ckage,pistonskirt,etc.

Incaseofspecialquillswithintegratedspraynozzles,theheavilyloadedcylinderwallcanalsobelubricateddirectly.

Since2009,thissystemisalsoavailableasaCLU4-Cversionwithacompactpumpdesign.

System function CLU4 and CLU4-C

TheCLU4lubesystemonmodernengineswithcommonrailtechnologyconsistspri-marilyof:

• Timedlubricators(1percylinder)with6to8outletportsandexternalmonitoringelectronics

• Quillsandspeciallydevelopedmastercontrolunit(providedbycustomer).

• Filtersystemwithscaleformeasurementoftotaloilconsumption.

Thecentralizedoilsupplysystemisactivatedbytheengine’smanagementsystembeforetheenginestartsup.Sothankstomoderncommonrailtechnology,servo-oilisalreadyavailabletothetimedlubricatorsbeforetheenginestarts.Thelubricating-oilneedsoftherespectivecylindersaredeterminedbythemastercontrolunit.Alubepulseisemittedthroughthecontrolelectronicsduetoactua-tionofa4/2-waysolenoidvalve.

Themeteringpistonshung-inthecentraldrivepistonabruptlyexecuteajointlydefinedmeteringstroke.Thespecialquillswithorwithoutaspray/injectionfunctiondischargetheirexactquantityoflubricantwithpinpointaccuracy.Dependingontheloadandoperat-ingstate,alubepulseistriggeredwithevery2nd,3rd,4thornthpistonstrokeorcrankshaftrevolution.

Monitoringelectronicscheckthemeteringpressure.Thus,itchecksthepulselubricationsystemforblockage,trappedair,shortageoflubricantanddrivefaults.
