Schedule Change Information for LGHSCourse Load: Between periods one through six, freshmen and sophomores must be enrolled in a minimum of six classes both semesters, and juniors and seniors must be enrolled in a minimum of five classes both semesters. Athletic participation counts towards graduation units, but not towards the minimum academic course requirements.
Requests to Change Teachers: Requests to change teachers are not honored unless the student has already taken a class from that teacher. In this case, the request is subject to space availability.
Adding a Class: Students have the first two weeks of school to add a class. These class additions are subject to space availability and meeting all pre-requisites.
Changing Course Level: Once the school year has started, students cannot change course levels (i.e. move from Alg 2 Acc to Algebra 2 or from Physics AP to Physics) until the end of the first marking period. At the seventh week of the semester, a one-week window opens for students to request a change in course level. As always, changes are subject to space availability.
Dropping a Class: Assuming that the minimum number of classes will be maintained, a student can drop a class given the following timeline:
During the first two weeks of school, a non-required course, including electives, may be dropped without penalty (assuming other school policies are met).
During weeks three through six, no classes can be changed or dropped.
During week seven (after the marking period), students can drop non-required courses without penalty, assuming other school policies are met. This would include electives, world language courses, and third or fourth year math/science courses.
Most classes are year-length and cannot be dropped at the semester. The one exception when a semester drop is allowed occurs when a student fails first semester in a Math or World Language class.
Pre-Requisites and Appeals: Once final semester grades are available, Counselors check pre-requisites and remove students from classes where they did not meet qualifications. If a student is still interested in taking the course, s/he should contact the Guidance Counselor immediately and discuss the opportunity to appeal placement.
