LORD GREY IN THE NEWS
Lord Grey Academy recently 'hit' the headlines in the MK Citizen in May as we finished 7th in a set of national performance tables. Please see the article below. We are all very proud.
Bletchley school students make the Top 10 in national performance tables. Lord Grey Sixth Form A-Level students have achieved excellent results and gained good ‘Value Added’ scores compared to other schools in health and social care. In 2017 the school finished in seventh position in the national performance tables for the Health and Social Care Level 3 course. Students worked exceptionally hard for their grades; tutors and teachers went that extra mile to make sure they achieved at the very top end, to gain entry to the university of their choice. “To see Lord Grey in the top seven across all of England for Health and Social Care at Level 3 is brilliant," said principal Dr Tracey Jones. "I felt so proud when I saw this. Well done to all involved.” The head of sixth form was equally thrilled: “Our students have historically performed extremely well on the Level 3 Health and Social Care courses, aided by some superb targeted and positive support from our very professional staff.” "We have consistently seen positive Value Added scores, but to see this top performance at a national level is very inspirational for the students and staff at Lord Grey Sixth Form and is a great example to younger students in the Academy.”

WISHING ALL OUR STUDENTS GOOD LUCK TAKING THEIR EXAMS!
Below are some revision tips to help you along the way...
Revision Top Tips Bitesize – revise in short sessions.
Use tricks and techniques to help you revise – mind maps, diagrams, mnemonics, highlighting etc.
Take a break – feed yourself or do something different between sessions.
Be organised – check you have all the notes well in advance, organise your notes.
Draw up a revision timetable with time for other activities too.
Before you start, make sure you have everything you need.
Find somewhere quiet to work.
Don’t work late at night – get enough sleep, especially during exams week.
Test yourself – reduce notes to five or so points and keep repeating...
To achieve those all important grades Turn off the television, iPad, DVD player, PSP or Xbox!
Say “no” to the shopping trip or football match or visit to the cinema – in the short term.
If you want those grades and you can get them then believe in yourself and put in the required effort and revision.
Buy or borrow revision guides – but do not over rely on them if you want A grades.
Make careful revision notes.
Use BBC Bitesize, Hegartymaths, S-cool and various other online revision sites.

On Friday 18 May, four excellent Lord Grey students visited the ’dizzy heights’ of the Tower
Block. They had chosen this as a reward from the ‘Upper School Principal’s Weekly Award Scheme’ for Great Attitude and Great Effort.
The Tower Block roof is an impressive place and not many staff or students have the opportunity to visit to see the fabulous views across and beyond the school. They were able to look down on their friends and teachers!
It was a very enjoyable time for them and even a couple of teachers we met as we came down the stairs from the roof top, were quite jealous of them!
QUOTES BELOW FROM THE STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE.
“It was educational. Sir mentioned all the network relays and where the cables go. You can see the City Centre from the Tower Block Roof.”
“It's actually really cool to see the entire school from the roof. I've learned a little bit about how the actual Tower Block itself works as well, so that was awesome. Hopefully this will encourage others to work harder so that they may earn this privilege too.”

On 23 May 2018 teachers and students from Lorenz 17 learnt how to use Chinese brushes, and to write Chinese hieroglyphs during Tutor Time. Our Chinese teacher Ms Lu explained the composition, usage of the brush, the use of rice paper and ink notes. After watching a cartoon story composed of hieroglyphs, students discovered the reasons for the origins of some of these Chinese characters. Next they tried to write some simple pictographic Chinese characters. Looking at their work below, can you recognise the meaning of these pictographic Chinese characters?

News from Turing
Recently, Oliver in Year 7 met a member of the England's World Cup football team: Raheem Stirling, whilst playing for his football team City Colts FC at Oakgrove. He was very excited to have met one of England's most talented football players. Oliver is now looking forward to watching Raheem on TV when England play Tunisia in their World Cup opener on 18th June. What a memorable moment! Miss Reynolds, French Teacher

On Tuesday, 22May a large cohort of students brought the stage to life in our annual Summer Showcase. We were so proud of the breadth of talent that was shared and performed to family, friends and staff.
Our Sixth Form students produced fantastic performances which ranged from Isabelle playing her Grade 8 Flute piece 'Hypnosis' beautifully, to Jodie’s dynamic choreography piece.
We had incredible solo singing from Ben and Lukas alongside some orchestral triumphs and stunning instrumental solos and GCSE Dance pieces. All had incredible energy. Our Year 7 and Year 8 Drama Club produced a fast paced and comical version of 'Ernie's Incredible Illucinations’ and our choir sang their hearts out with 'This is me' from the Greatest Showman.
Thank you to everyone who came to support and for the staff members in the Performing Arts Faculty and beyond who helped organise the show and support the students on the night.
All students involved have received a Principal’s Award for their incredible commitment to rehearsals and professionalism during the evening.
We look forward to the next one!

My Nan and the
Greatest Military Leader
in
British History by Destiny, History Student.
My family has a large and varied collection of old newspapers that my nan
collected. These newspapers include articles that cover the death of
Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill did many different things throughout
his life, however he is best remembered for being the Prime Minister that
led Britain to victory in WW2.
My nan was the person who kept the collection of newspapers because she
had a personal connection to Winston Churchill. During the war she worked
at Bletchley Park as a cook and she cooked for him and met him, he even
gave her a box of chocolates.
Bletchley Park was Britain’s main secret location where people decoded
secret German messages. She thought Winston Churchill was a great man
and to personally have known him was a big honour. Therefore, she collect-
ed the newspapers as memories of his life.
In my opinion, I think it is important to keep these memories alive because
it is a significant part of my family and Britain’s history. Winston Churchill
was a great leader and in my opinion the main reason Britain is the country
it is today.

Celebrating Sporting Stars Jay, C13 is working hard at his Karate and is currently a top green belt which is a huge achievement. Jay is now training for his brown belt which he hopes to take in December.
Archie, C13 currently plays for MK Wanderers. U14 Hawks are also playing a second season in the Chiltern Youth League Division 2, another competitive league that challenges the players and gives them even more football and playing time following on from a successful first campaign (2015/16 season) in which they finished fifth.
Well done Hannah, for participating in the 5K Race for Life in Milton Keynes recently.

We are always looking at ways to help you achieve
your full potential. Lord Grey has subscribed to SAM
Learning which is an online learning package which
has materials for SATS, GCSEs and A Levels. The
resources available on the system are very good, and
have the advantage that they can be accessed
anywhere where there is an INTERNET connection, at
home, in the LRC, public libraries as well as in lessons.
Independent research shows that provided students
use the materials for more than 10 hours in total then
it will boost SAT and GCSE grades.
So how do you get started?
The Web address is: www.samlearning.com
Every student has a unique user ID.
To discover yours follow these simple instructions!
CENTRE ID: MK3LG
USER ID: your date of birth followed by your two initials
e.g. the user ID for DAVID JONES, born on the 1 August
1985 would be 010885DJ
PASSWORD: This is the same as your USER ID but you
can change this once you have logged on for the first
time.
The system is not meant to substitute the work that you
do in class with your teacher, or homework that has
been set by your teachers. It is meant to complement
and enhance your learning and revision skills—by
completing exam style questions you will get better at
exams and having to mark your own work will help you
understand exactly what the examiners want in an
answer.

Health and Welfare Advisor
IMPORTANT Ban on Aerosol Sprays in School
Dear Parent/Carer,
At Lord Grey Academy we take our responsibility to protect the wellbeing and health of students and staff very seriously. We are writing to you regarding a number of incidents with both staff and students having severe allergic reactions to aerosol sprays. For some members of the Lord Grey Academy community these allergic reactions are triggered by any aerosols. We feel that we must now insist that these are not brought into school.
We have had situations when students have used/sprayed with an aerosol and then entered a classroom and the chemicals/strong smells were enough to trigger severe breathing difficulties/problems. This has happened to both staff and students and on at least two occasions has led to hospital treatment.
I am sure students will understand that we cannot put the health of any member of our community at risk and ask that you work with us on this matter.
There are plenty of deodorants, such as roll on products, on the market which are not aerosols and we ask that you get your child to use these instead.
If we find aerosols on students they will be confiscated. Thank you for your help and support on this very important issue.
Nigel Handyside, Vice Principal
