I love Thanksgiving and the wonderful vibe of feasting with loved ones and being thankful for what we have. Take nothing for granted my friends. Life is too short for regrets. Tell the people that you love, that you love them everyday. Hey, I went to the Wailers (Kingston, Jamaica) show this weekend and I’m all full of peace and love. Peace, love and take a cab… So, a group of us islanders loaded up the van and went into town to see the Wailers at the House of Rock last Friday. Realizing this is the season for (shall we say) heightened police awareness of DWI’s, we had our buddy Brian on DD duties and he did a great job of providing safe transportation for us since it was too far to cab it. While we’re on the subject, I highly recommend either calling a cab or recruiting a designated driver through the holiday season… either that or keep your local bail bondsman on speed dial. It’s the safe and responsible thing to do. I know at least in Port A, the cops have already beefed up their patrol at night. OK… everyone got that? If you drink and drive between now and New Year’s Eve, you are a fool and have been warned. Now, back to the peace and love… A little Wailer history… In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past 40 years, here’s some background on the Wailers… their nucleus formed in 1969, when Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh recruited the Barrett brothers - bassist Aston “Family Man” and drummer Carly - from Lee Perry’s Upsetters to play on hits such as Lively Up Yourself, Trenchtown Rock, Duppy Conqueror, and many more besides. Inspired by Rastafari and their ambitions of reaching an international audience, this is the line-up that pioneered roots rock reggae, and signed to Island Records in 1971. Bunny and Peter left two years later. It was at this point that the in- demand Barrett brothers - whose rhythms also underpinned innumerable seventies’ reggae hits by other acts - assumed the title of Wailers, and backed Marley on the group’s international breakthrough album, Natty Dread. Under Family Man’s musical leadership, they then partnered Bob Marley on the succession of hit singles and albums that made him a global icon, winner of several Lifetime Achievement awards, and Jamaica’s best-loved musical superstar. Drummer Carlton “Carlie” Barrett died in 1987, leaving his brother as the main beneficiary of the Wailers’ mantle. Ashton “Family Man” Barrett is the only original member left in the band today. Their music has sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide. In England alone, they’ve notched over twenty chart hits, including seven Top 10 entries. Today, the vibrant Koolant assumes the duties as lead vocalist. Their website explains, “As enthusiastic audiences have already discovered, Koolant brings his own personal expression to Marley’s songs, revitalizing them for young and old alike. Yet there’s a great deal more to the Wailers than reliving the past. Apart from featuring on a forthcoming Wailers’ album studded with celebrity guest artists, Koolant sings lead vocals on the band’s two latest tracks – one a future lovers’ rock classic called Shining Star, and the other a heartfelt appeal – A Step For Mankind – made on behalf of the World Food Program.” Positive vibration… Our timing was perfect. We walked into the venue just as the Wailers were just taking the stage. The place was packed and reeked of the Rasta groove. It was very mellow. And, once the band started hammering out Marley’s hits (One Love, Jammin’, Comin’ in from the Cold, Redemption Song, Three Little Birds, Get Up Stand Up, Could You Be Love, No Woman No Cry, Buffalo Soldier, etc, etc), the place got a whole lot reekier. The show was great. They sounded just like Bob Marley and the Wailers and played all the Bob Marley and the Wailers songs that we all know the words to. And they played for three hours! It was a blast dancing at the front of the stage with people half my age that also love reggae. Reggae is truly a music that transcends age and cultures. We walked out of that show with huge smiles on our faces and feeling of peace with the world. It was a very positive vibration! We Jammin’… The weekly open jam at the Tarpon Ice House last Sunday was killer. A ton of people showed up to show off their ample talents. Uel Jackson hosts the jam each week and does a good job of keeping the show moving. This week Jimmy Simmons brought his band mates from Three Way Street over and provided a pretty solid core band for the jam. He has Corky Flowers on bass, Rick Lyles on drums and one amazing Derek Steenken on lead guitar. Derek is an Austin boy that moved down here with his brother Mark (who is also an amazing guitarist… mostly in the blues vein.) I saw these two guys sit in with Mike Milligan & the Altar Boys (Austin, TX) at the Back Porch some time back and was impressed. Also, a guy from Padre Island showed up named Stevie Start who had a rockin’ Steve Earle kind of thing going that we all fell in love with. We should start seeing him playing around some. Watch for the name… Stevie Start. He’s good. And, a lady named Sue Landry jumped in out of nowhere and played some very cool originals for us. Throw in the undeniable voice of Dennis Sullivan and some killer guitar licks from Dan McLeod plus some kickin’ fiddle from Kit Gutherz and it turned out to be a serious jam. At one point, I counted eight musicians on stage. I did record quite a bit of the show and thought it sounded pretty darn good. Good jam guys… glad you all came out! There was a lot of great talent running around the Ice House stage that night. You should have been there. DO NOT MISS LIST Thanksgiving weekend… On Thanksgiving night, the Free Beer Band will play their regular Thursday night gig at the Tarpon Ice House. They will also have a pot-luck Thanksgiving dinner. On Friday, the 23 rd Rae Ann & the Ride will play Shorty’s and Uel Jackson will be there the next night. Also on Friday night, Ray T & the City Crew will be at the Flat’s Lounge. Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) will play two performances at the Third Coast Theater this weekend (November 23 and 24). On Friday night he will play a song swap with Deryl Dodd (Nashville, TN). Dodd was once signed with Columbia Records and has toured with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. On Saturday, Taylor will perform with his regular band that features Joe Fortini on guitar. On the horizon… The following weekend, the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson will be at the House of Rock on Friday, November 30 th . The wonderful Folk Family Revival (Houston, TX) will open that show. On December 1 st , folk god Ray Wylie Hubbard (Wimberley, TX) will be at the Third Coast Theater, Jul & the Chrome Wheels will be at the Ice House and Todd Dorn (San Antonio, TX) will play a solo show at Shorty’s. On the horizon, Slaid Cleaves (Austin, TX) will be at Third Coast on the 8 th , Los Lonely Boys and Alejandro Escovedo will be at Brewster Street on the 13 th . Robert Earl Keen will play his annual Christmas show at Brewster on the 20 th with Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines opening. Be careful out there. And that’s the truth!
