FROM THE PRIESTS: Please read the readings for this weekend (even every day) in your family. You can access them on the CTKCC website or on the calendar on the web-site usccb.org. If using your family Bible, this 4th Sunday of Lent’s readings are: 1 Sam 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Ps 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6 (Resp. “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.); Eph 5:8-14; John 9:1-41. The Evangelist John crafts individual stories as if he were a playwright. He stages his stories in a way that the reader/hearer can focus on the main action. Only main charac-ters are present for each scene; we see this style in the drama of “The Man Born Blind.” We have been invited into the dra-ma. With whom are we going to identify? Well, who among us was not born blind? That’s right, you and we Frs. Tims are all persons who were born blind. We all needed to learn what it is that we see. For the Evangelist John, this story is one of his para-digms about becoming a disciple of Jesus. Like the blind man, all of us were born unable to see who Jesus is. At first, the newly-healed blind man is only able to say that Jesus was the one who gave him sight—but that is already something. After that first encounter with Jesus, he already becomes one who is sent, which his washing in Siloam symbolizes. The formerly blind man’s neighbors and acquaintances couldn't accept the change in his sight—some even ques-tioned who he was. And why not, who really looks at and sees a blind beggar? (I hope we would!) The devout and pious Pharisees wanted the man to know that this Jesus certainly couldn't be of God, because Jesus broke the Sabbath law. The formerly blind man now sees more deeply that Jesus is a prophet—a rather safe answer in the face of those who know the Law better than he. No one—not even the man’s parents—is willing to cor-roborate his testimony. He is pushed harder. The man does not buckle under, but comes to a deeper faith; he concludes that if the prophet Moses came from God—and not even Mo-ses opened the eyes of a man born blind—then the prophet Jesus must come from God. The story ends with a second encounter with Jesus, at which time the man sees even more deeply: he confesses Jesus as Lord, and worships him. The roles are fully reversed: the blind man can see and those who think they can see are blind. It seems as though many of us human beings have a difficulty seeing things in new ways. Who was it that first said to us, “You see that, that’s a...such-and-such”? Who was it who told us what to think about those people, those ideas, those things that they pointed out to us? Those who taught us to see need not be blamed or vilified, any more than the parents, neighbors, and Pharisees in the story should be. Just as the man born blind needed healing to see, we all need healing grace to see things anew, to see new ways the Lord calls and sends us. In this new circumstance of the novel coronavirus pandemic, we can open ourselves to God’s grace and healing so that we can see how we are called not to let fear drive us, how we are to be concerned not only about ourselves, but to see our important place in the larger community. Like Jesus, our Bishop and many others have been will-ing to alter “sacred law” for the sake of safety, health and pro-tecting life. May we use this time to open ourselves to new ways to deepen our vision of Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior. May this time help us to see how our spiritual vision has been somewhat myopic. We can all acknowledge that we still need the help of others and God’s grace to see things as they are—especially our own blind spots that keep us from seeing that

Jesus the Christ is Lord of our lives and it is only God, Father Son and Holy Spirit, whom we worship. Lord Jesus, we pray, lather our eyes with your spittle-and-clay eye salve! Lord we hear you clearly: there is no sin in being blind, but there is sin in refusing to acknowledge our blindness. Help us to join the man born blind on a journey into sight, into deeper love of you, Lord Jesus! IN CASE YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT, this is the full press re-lease from the Bishop’s office: Updated diocesan guidelines as response to COVID-19 as of 3/16/20: Following the recommendations released by the Centers of Disease Control to “cancel large events or gatherings that could contribute to the spread of COVID-19,” Bishop Walker Nickless issued the mandate to suspend all Sunday and public Masses effec-tive immediately. This suspension will extend for eight weeks, and then will be re-evaluated as the coronavirus situation develops. The CDC recom-mends no gathering of groups of 50 or larger during this crisis. Par-ishes within the diocese will resume normal activities when it is safe to do so. “This has been the most difficult decision I have made during my time as bishop,” Bishop Nickless explained after making the decision to cancel all Masses, which will include Holy Week, the high point of the Catholic Church’s liturgical year. “The health and well-being of all people in the diocese, as well as all Catholics, is of the utmost importance at this time. I ask all the faithful for their understanding and to join me in prayer for the end to this public health crisis.” During this period, Catholics in the Diocese of Sioux City are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, according to the bishop’s mandate. Liturgical and parish guidelines for this 8-week period will include:

All public celebrations of the Mass will be suspended. Pastors are encouraged to broadcast private Masses via electronic means for their parishioners.
