NEWSLETTER Week 4 Term 1 2017
Visible Learning I’d like to thank the very large number of parents who attended our
Acquaintance Night last Wednesday. The largest number of parents I
counted in one class, was 32 in a class of 24 students! Parents are to
be congratulated for availing themselves of the opportunity to meet the
teachers, and hear about how learning is structured for their children.
I’m sure, like me, parents were very impressed with the thorough
organization of the teachers, their professionalism, and the way the
students have begun the year. While this is an impressive start, parents
will be pleased to learn that we are aiming to improve the speed of our
learning, and increase student outcomes even further.
Visible Learning -3 Year Project
On Monday, our Pupil Free Day, 29 Littlehampton teachers and 10 of
our student support SSOs all attended a “Visible Learning” foundation
workshop. This is the first of 6 such workshops that will be delivered
to our staff under a 3 year project our school has joined with Visible
Learning. Parents will be interested to know that all DECD schools in
our Heysen Partnership (greater Mt Barker district) are going into this
project together, and the training on Monday was for over 350
teachers and SSOs.
Research proven strategies to improve the speed of learning
Our school has signed an agreement with this organization to work
with us over a three year period, to implement research proven
strategies that will improve the speed of learning. On this first
foundation day, our teachers were introduced to these strategies.
Assessment Capable Learners
A big part of the secret is “Assessment Capable Learners”, students
who know what they are learning, and how to learn. Students who can
describe the processes they use, and what they can do if they don't
know what to do. Students who know what makes a good learner, and
have a toolbox of strategies to monitor and improve their learning. It is
a big challenge for teachers to impart this level of learning to their
students, as well as deep knowledge of the curriculum.
Know The Impact—the first step
Nathan Sanders, Margie Sarre and I also attended training on Tuesday
for Leaders and have come away with a range of assessments which
will help us know what impact our teachers and programs are having at
the moment, as we embark on this program. We have until May 22 to
gather this data. Then consultants will work with us to choose our next
steps to have the maximum impact on student learning. There will be
3 such Impact Cycles throughout the program, where the impact of
our programs on student achievement is measured and next steps
planned.

Over the years, our school has grown in numbers quite
significantly. This has resulted in a lack of adequate space
for the Junior Primary students to compete safely with the
Primary students in a true athletics sports day that includes
traditional events such as sprints, long distance, long jump
and hurdles. This year we would like to give the younger
children this opportunity and have decided to hold a Junior
Primary “Athletics Day” on the morning of Thursday
23rd March followed by fun tabloid events as part of the
whole school Sports Day on Friday 24th March. We plan
to run about 7 traditional athletic events on Thursday
morning where the younger children can wear t-shirts in
their house colours and participate strongly, knowing there
will be a modified scoring system. The house points they
earn on Thursday will be included in the final tally on
Friday when the Whole School Sports Day is run. By no
means will the children miss out on Friday either. On
Friday the Junior Primary will be involved in the March on,
War Cries and Health Hustle exactly as they have in the past
and in addition, they will have 4 fun tabloid events.
The advantage of this format is that the children will have
the space on the oval, which will be marked out ready for
Friday’s sports day, where they can safely and correctly
participate in true athletic events. Parents of Junior Primary
students(R-2) might be wondering which of the two days
they should attend. Parents are welcome both days.
Thursday will be the athletic events until lunchtime and
Friday they will join in with whole school events in a more
carnival atmosphere with a barbecue lunch available.

2017 Material & Service Fees Swimming Program - Week 5 and 6
Swimming begins next week for our Reception to Year
5 students. All parents attending swimming need to
collect the Parent Attendance Card from the Front
Office. Parents are welcome to come along and observe;
please note that the toddler pool will not be able to be
used because the pool is not open for public swimming
during swimming lessons. It helps us greatly if the
sunscreen is applied at home for morning sessions and a
tube for topping up is packed in their bags. All
swimmers should carry a plastic bag containing bathers,
goggles (optional), towel, t-shirt for swimming,
underwear for afterwards, sunscreen, recess snack
(morning groups) or lunch (afternoon groups). Please
name everything clearly.

Payment of 2017 Material and Services
fees of $295 is due in full on Friday 28th
February unless arrangements have been
made with the office to pay using our
new Payway system. If paying by
Payway your agreement needs to be
processed prior to the end of February
2017. Only M&S and Building fund
donations can be paid via this system. Your $100 gym
donation can be paid at any time but we encourage
families to pay this early as our first payment of $5992.31
is due 15/3/17 and we rely on your contribution to meet
our repayments of $23969.23 each year. Thank you to
those families who have already paid.
We would like to ask parents to make payments at the
school office when dropping children at school in the
morning. The school office is open from 8am. This will
allow us to bank earlier in the day and avoid holding cash
in the office during the day. A reminder that you can pay
via the internet - BSB 105-025, account number 115 050
840 and please quote your family code, eg: DANI00 and
you can put SAKG, M&S, AQUATICS or whatever you
are paying if room permits. Other payment options are:
cash, cheque, Eftpos (in person, by phone or completing
the tear off slip at the bottom of your invoice). If applying
for School Card, please complete a new application form
each year and return it to the school office now. School
Card is not available for preschool students. Preschool
fees are also due on 28th February and if you have
overlooked this payment please pay at the school office
now.
Thank you to those families who have already paid in the
first few weeks. Any questions about finance can be
directed to Judi or Sandy on 8391 1194.
Our school will be commencing a Chess Club on
Thursdays during recess times in our Resource Centre.
David Koetsier from the Chesslife will be running the
sessions, and will be speaking at our Week 6 Assembly.
David is a professional chess player and coach.
The first session will be on Thursday March 18th (Week
7) and each session attended will cost $5.00 per student.
Besides learning some amazing chess skills, there are
many other benefits that this program can bring:
Building Friendships, Communication, Strategic
Planning, Losing with dignity, Dealing with anxiety and
Increasing mathematical skills.
More information will follow including a consent form
for those that are interested. For more information
contact Nathan Sanders.

Parents, we are wondering whether you can help us
with a supervision problem we are having at present.
Before school, students are supervised on the oval and
the bottom playground. There is no supervision around
classrooms or in the dragon sandpit area. Teachers are
very busy at this time, getting ready for the school day.
The trouble we are having is that some children are
waiting with their families in these areas, and many
other children join them to wait here as well,
effectively unsupervised. If you see other children
without parents in these areas before school, would you
be so kind as to remind them gently to wait in the
playground until the bell goes? We will remind them all
at assembly too. Thank you for working with us to keep
our children safe.
Before School Supervision of Students
The IT STOPS steps
We believe that it is really important for students to learn
how to sort out differences successfully with others. We
teach students the skills to do this, using a model
developed here at our school, called the “IT STOPS
Steps”. All students have been focussing on learning and
practising these skills this term, and we thought it would
be good for parents to know what they are, and how to
refer their children to using them when necessary. The
steps are:
We also teach students that HOW you speak to others is
very important:
We have noticed that students are most successful when
they are brave enough to take the step to speak to the
person upsetting them, who is often a friend (taking a
buddy to support them if this helps), are specific about
what they don’t like, and speak in a way that lets the
other person know they are serious about wanting it to
stop. They also need to trust that the adults in the school
will help them to sort out issues if they are unable to do
so themselves and tell us if they need help.
Parents will be aware from the news, and through our
emailed letter that we have been instructed to cut the
cords on hats. Today teachers and leaders did a check
on hats and cut cords which might place the children at
risk when active on equipment.
If you have any questions about this,
please do not hesitate to contact the
school.
Kind Regards, Jenny Lewis, Principal
