LITERATURES FROM INDIAN SUBCONTINENT : A REVIEW OF
DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS
About the College
Iswar Saran Degree College, a premier constituent college of the
University of Allahabad came into existence in 1970 under the aegis of Harijan
Sewak Sangh and is presently celebrating its glorious journey of 50 years. This
college was founded by late Munshi Iswar Saran, a close associate of
Mahatma Gandhi. The bonding and association of Late Munshi Ji with
Mahatma Gandhi was so strong that he visited the campus twice which
accorded the heritage significance to our institution. Later on, as a tribute to its
founder, the society was renamed as Iswar Saran Ashram. UGC has granted the
title of 'College with Potential for Excellence' (CPE) status to Iswar Saran PG
College. The mission of the college is to disseminate knowledge, skills, values
and character to the students. It will help them to face ever emerging global
challenges in life. Apart from the traditional courses, the college runs various
certificate courses. Such courses enable the students to face challenges and
concerns of the life and contribute to the society in general.
About the Seminar
English Literature in Indian subcontinent was conceived and born with
the publication of The Travels of Dean Mahomet, a travel narrative by Sake
Dean Mahomed in 1794. This laid the foundation of the future writings in Indian
English Literature. Though it took as long as seventy years for the first Indian
English novel Rajmohan's Wife to come into existence which was penned by
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and published in 1864. Soon after that
Bianca, or The Young Spanish Maiden (1878) by Toru Dutt was the first novel
written by an Indian woman. After that English Literature in Indian
Subcontinent flourished incessantly, producing invincible bodies of great
oeuvres by renowned writers like Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, R.K.Narayan, Raja
Rao, Mulk Raj Anand – to name a few, who looked after the creation of rich
literary opuses taking it to greater heights.
The contribution of Indian Subcontinent to literature in English is
insurmountable. In the field of English Literature, the first Nobel Laureate-
Rudyard Kipling was born in India; and second Nobel Laureate- Rabindranath
Tagore was an Indian. Among the later writers Salman Rushdie, Nayantara
Sehgal, Anita Desai, Kiran Desai, Vikram Seth, Amitav Ghosh, Shashi
Tharoor, Rohinton Mistry etc. from India, Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota,
Madhav Prasad Ghimire, Diamond Shamsher, Paras Mani Pradhan from
Nepal, Bapsi Sidhwa, Hanif Kureshi, Moniza, etc from Pakistan, Tahmima
Anam, Neamat Imam, Monica Ali, Zia Haider Rahman etc. from Bangladesh
and Kunzang Choden, Dilliram Sharma Acharya, Ap Chuni Dorji etc. from
Bhutan have proved their excellence and are getting accolades and awards
all over the world.
Today the Literature in English from Indian Subcontinent is a fully
developed category that requires independent attention and research. However, so far, no comprehensive and inclusive study that discusses the literature of the entire subcontinent, has been done.
