The artists created a profusion of light-filled paintings

that captured sublime but fragile beauty, in a distinctive modern style. The exhibition explores the impact on impressionism and modernism on American West Coast painters. Through September 9. One of the most important American artists of the last fifty years, Ellsworth Kelly used vibrant colors, chromatic contrast, and spatial relationships to redefine abstract art. His visual vocabulary is drawn from observations of the world around him—shapes and silhouettes found in plants, architecture, shadows—developed from his interest in the space between objects and between his work and its viewer. Through September 16. 70 Years/70 Photographs This selection of works celebrates the diversity and breadth of the Museum’s acquisitions, demonstrating the trajectory of photographic history, and highlighting seventy exceptional images that the Museum has acquired during the past seven decades. Jean Bradbury’s detailed oil paintings of plants and animals use a sensitive observation of nature to depict emotionally charged environments. The themes of her work include feelings of anxiety and heartache set amid whimsical landscapes of seductive beauty. Through July.

In August, showing watercolors by Mary Ann Daley. In this series of abstract landscapes, the artist reveals the intense connection of the elements of nature to the fundamentals of painting. They are all about color as she uses thick watercolor pigments with all their vibrancy and luminosity to create a unique version of the Northwest. In September, Mikko Freeman shows representational oil paintings. He considers himself a traditional realist and although he works primarily in oils he prepared many of his compositions in either ink, pencil, or charcoal. His intentions to create naturalistic artwork comes from a deep love of nature; a desire to capture the infi nite varieties of form and space, color, and depth.

WATERWORKS GALLERY315 Argyle Street • (360) 378-3060 • Tues-Sun, call for hours • [email protected] • www.waterworksgallery.com Landscape Perspectives Tim Schumm and Dominik Modlinksiare masters of Northwest landscape/waterscape. Each in their own unique style honors the land/water with a vibrant palette and bold brushwork. Each artist’s paintings represent the land in an intimate manner and a different perspective portraying their love and respect for the land/water. Through July 7. Featuring oil paintings by Jaime Ellsworth and ceramic sculpture by Robin & John Gumaelius. When looking at the works of these artists, one is filled with a sense of magic and delight. How did that dog do that? Why is that bird on the creatures’s head? This familiar sense of wonder enables us to delight in the paintings of Jaime Ellsworth. Using a modified color palette and design, Ellsworth imbues her paintings of dogs with memories of our own dogs. Robin and John Gumaelius create mixed media magic with their creatures arriving in all shapes, sizes, and stories. It’s always the stories that are painted and fired onto the bodies of their fanciful creatures that evoke the fairy tales from days gone by. Artist Talk & Reception: Saturday, August 4—call for details and time. Waterworks encourages young

artists in your family to attend. August 4-25. Showing the evocative work of painters Michael Dickter and Caroline James. The tactile surfaces of their paintings filled with extensive visual information and provide references to their past work. Dickter’s paintings portrays birds and flowers as if they were musical notes on a sheet of paper. Beautiful painting skills combined with the marks left by pencils. Caroline James infuses the surface of her paintings with remembered remnant memories of her childhood shown in an abstracted manner. These works reveal, paper remnants, pencil marks, and applied paints as completed paintings. Reception: Saturday, September 8. September 8-29.
