Directly linking CCTV with Access Control: Serial-to-
Wiegand Converter.
Being an LPR-application developer, InnoWare Technologies often finds itself in the middle
between CCTV- and Access Control Systems.
On one side our License Plate Recognition solutions are used within the CCTV environment,
to increase the level of security and intelligence within the system.
On the other side our solutions are used within the Access Control environment, to add an
– alternative or additional – means of entry/exit-control.
System interconnection
As it is our strategy to keep our technology and solutions completely transparent towards
(existing) front-end applications, this implies of course that we need to ensure a smooth
and deep integration with both VMS as well as Access Control systems.
To warrant such smooth connection with both systems, InnoWare has now developed a
Serial-to-Wiegand converter.
Such converter allows for a direct and seamless connection of VMS, Access Control and
InnoWare LPR system.
How does it work?
Our LPR system reads a license plate, the plate is checked against the database; the
database contains, apart from the plates, also the corresponding badge-ID’s.
When a plate is validated, i.e. is found in the white-list, InnoWare transmits a command –
typically the corresponding badge-ID – to the serial port of the device.
The Serial-to-Wiegand converter then translates that back into the Access Control system.

Why this approach?
Many devices have a serial port, ranging from cameras, over NVRs to PCs. It is thus
possible to connect directly onto most any CCTV installation.
The Wiegand protocol is a universal, commonly known and supported protocol. Its use
ensures compatibility with most every Access Control system, and thus direct connection
onto most any Access Control installation.
Conclusion?
The use of InnoWare’s Serial-to-Wiegand converter allows an extremely affordable direct
coupling of CCTV and Access Control, offering almost complete transparency in the choice
of brands and systems.
In layman’s terms the use of a Serial-to-Wiegand converter means you virtually turn your
CCTV camera into a badge reader.
