• 347 million LinkedIn users (as of February 2015); 111 million LinkedIn users in the United States. LinkedIn is growing at a rate of 2 new users per second

• 40 % of LinkedIn users check in daily

• 13 % of LinkedIn users are millennials (15-34 years of age)

• LinkedIn user is 11 times more likely to have profile viewed if there is a profile photo

• A average LinkedIn user has 930 connections

• Average user spends 17 minutes a month using LinkedIn

Step #1: Establish Account

1. Enter name (first, last)

2. Enter e-mail address

3. Establish password

Step #2: Build Profile

1. Upload a professional photo (headshot)

• Dress professionally/appropriately – consistent with occupation

• Good quality photo – clear• Appropriate background• Good smile, exuding confidence• Keep it simple (no pets, other

people)• Select a recent photo• Be consistent (use photo across

social media platforms)

2. Develop a skills based headline, not job titles

• Example: Experienced Transportation Executive, Web Designer and Information Architect, Visionary Entrepreneur and Investor

3. Develop a strong summary (who you are and what you do)

• Tell a story – what do you want others to know about you. A strong summary should highlight your value.

• Highlight key skills in story – indicate your “signature” skill areas; should be related to your targeted job/occupation

4. Add your professional experience

• Can mirror your resume, but does not have to read exactly like the resume.

• Develop a brief position overview and highlight your accomplishments

7. Add your contact me preferences

8. Add links to other social media profiles

9. Start to join groups and participate in discussion

Other Suggestions

• Join Groups and participate in discussions – contribute your expertise when you can and offer your expertise where you can

• Ask others to connect – target individuals and send a customized invitation

• Set up your Skills so others can endorse your skills

• Ask your network to offer recommendations (don’t be afraid to ask those you’ve worked with to do this for you – reciprocate when you can)
