If you’ve paid attention to the marketing “gurus” out there, you’ve likely heard that social media is THE #1 place for Small Businesses to engage their customers and increase their overall revenue. While a lot of those “experts” will focus on social selling, likes, “going viral”, and other buzzwords, few of these experts focus on the step-by-step strategies that ACTUALLY generate leads and sales.

Now, before you can start generating leads, one of the initial things you MUST do is optimize your LinkedIn profile. You want to make sure you can be found AND that you’re putting your best foot forward. This will go a long way in turning profile views into leads!

By following the proven 14-Point Checklist below, you will position yourself ahead of most of your competitors.

Keep in mind though, this is just the start. Having a fancy LinkedIn profile is great, but it won’t grow your business all by itself. Check out the profiles of your top competitors websites to analyze their keyword placement and usage to get an idea.

Include the benefits of your service or the RESULTS you bring your customers, rather than a dry job title.

Start by writing a list of 7-10 keywords (or search phrases) to focus on.

Don’t sound too robotic in the summary. After all, this is a “social” network, and people want to connect and do business with the PEOPLE who they know, like, and trust. They aren’t interested in connecting with

keyword-stuffing machines.

In your summary, expand upon the results you mentioned in the headline.

Forget about that list of keywords (you can add in a couple key phrases later).

You have 2,000 characters to use in the Summary section, to share your story with your prospects. In a friendly tone, explain a bit more about the return your product or service provides, but don’t be too sales-y.

Whether you want people to call, email, or attend your upcoming webinar, provide them a clear and obvious call-to-action. Don’t overdo it with 15 different things you want these prospects to do. Stick with one clear CTA that will be most enticing to your ideal prospects.

Focus on any past positions that speak to the experience and expertise you have in the field you are currently working in.

Reach out to colleagues who can provide testimonials on your LinkedIn profile about your proficiency in your field. This will prove that you are an expert in the field and as a bonus – someone that is pleasant to work with.

Think about what your prospects would be searching for, and compare it with your original list of keywords. Then add these to

your “Skills” section.

Utilize Slideshare to embed powerpoints or an YouTube video. You can also publish posts on LinkedIn’s Publisher platform, to demonstrate your expertise at solving the pain points of your prospects.

You can include custom names (rather than the stock “Your Website” name) for your sites by selecting “Other”.

You don’t need a professional photoshoot. All you need is a clean headshot of yourself smiling.

People want to connect with and do business with people they know, like, and trust, so choose a photograph in which you appear friendly.

LinkedIn caps your groups at 50, and you should join that many to expand your LinkedIn network and prospect pool as much as possible.

You may not be able to italicize, highlight, or bold, but you can use unicode symbols to call out the most important areas (i.e. your CTA).

CAUTION: Don’t go overboard with the unicode. Too many symbols will cut

down on the impact, and will end up looking cheesy.
