Get on track to your first home

If you’re planning to buy a house, CAP COM can get you on the right track from the start.

Let us be your guide – from targeting an affordable price range to checking your credit status. When you’re ready to buy, we’ll be ready to make your first home a reality.

Call, go online or visit a convenient CAP COM branch.

FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYERS WORKSHOP: Don’t miss our FREE workshop at our Main Office on March 24. See Page 8 for details.

Savings add up with Free After Five®

Our new Free After Five Program1 gives members with five years of on-time payments a chance to eliminate monthly mortgage insurance premiums, also called PMI payments.

No real estate appraisal will be required and coverage will remain active until your mortgage’s loan-to-value reaches 78%.

How to save $4,335!2

A member with a $200,000 home and a 30-year mortgage could have an $85 monthly mortgage insurance payment.

After five years (60 months) of on-time payments, our Free After Five Program would eliminate that bill – avoiding 51 future payments totaling $4,335.1Offered in partnership with the Radian Group.2Example shows a member with a FICO score of 740 who paid 5% down on a fixed-rate $200,000 home mortgage.

I believe the New Year will be one of progress for CAP COM members. That belief is rooted in CAP COM’s eventful 2010. Last year, we opened our 10th branch on Hoosick Road in Brunswick and expanded our Mortgage Department with the addition of MorPAC (Mortgage Processing Assistance Center, LLC.). Today, our MorPAC mortgage experts can discuss lending options for all stages of life: From first-time homebuyers seeking VA or FHA loans (see page at left) to seniors considering Reverse Mortgages.

Drop by any of our convenient branch locations and discover the benefits of our expanded service. Our unique Five-Minute Financial Checkup can reveal options you never thought possible. Remember the story of Mike McGarry, a

homeowner from Saratoga County who dropped by our Latham Branch last spring to get a $50 advance from his son’s Academic Advantage Loan. He happened to ask a Branch Associate about a low-rate Home Loan and was soon on his way to saving $700 per month with a new “life-changing” Home Loan. No matter what stage of life you’re at, we can help. Just ask 10-year-old CAP COM fan Jakub Hann, who convinced his parents to join the Credit Union. As you’ll read on Page 3, Jakub tells us: “I did not think it was fair for [my parents] to be treated like a number while I was being treated like royalty.” The Hann family lives near our Niskayuna Branch. Jakub and his parents, Violette and Robert, felt welcomed when they first visited the branch to open a Youth Account. Violette told us she “felt a warm feeling as soon as we came in.” So, as the New Year begins, make plans to call or drop by for a Five-Minute Financial Checkup. Or, just stop in at any branch to warm up with a free hot chocolate or coffee. From the small details to the big picture, we can help you make progress in 2011!

Sincerely,

Paula A. StoperaPresident/CEO

Young Jakub Hann says he’s “treated like royalty”

Jakub has many interests. He plays clarinet, likes reading and landed a role in his fifth-grade musical. And, the 10 year old from Schenectady is already making informed financial choices. “I did a web search for ‘kid-friendly banks.’ I scrolled down and found CAP COM,” Jakub said. “You guys had all this kids’ stuff and you actually pay me for my report card. CAP COM was the only one who paid me for doing well in school.” CAP COM’s Youth Accounts are available for children from birth to age 17 and feature our seasonal Reading Programs (see Page 2) and annual Great Grades program. Kids earn $10 per quarterly report card (up to $40 per year) that they submit. Membership didn’t end with a Youth Account for the Hann family. Parents Violette and Robert also set up Checking and Savings Accounts. The Hanns live near our Niskayuna Branch on Balltown Road. “I really wanted my parents to join. I did not think it was fair for them to be treated like a number while I was being treated like royalty,” Jakub said.

Call, go online or visit a branch to open a new Youth Account.

Q&A with KimHelping parents and teens plan for college

Q: The cost of college is soaring and I’m seeking a strategy to pay for my child’s education. Can CAP COM help?

A: The short answer is yes. Our College Bound Program helps families navigate the college selection process and find educational loans. But, as the landscape of higher education changes, parents and teens should get involved and get informed. CAP COM’s College Bound Program is a great resource. Think of us as a GPS device for the selection process and college journey.

We’ll help you find a great educational experience at a college that also fits your budget. Families with high school sophomores and juniors can join us at our College Prep Workshop on March 1 starting at 6:30 p.m. at The Century House in Latham. After the search is done, seniors and parents will need to start thinking about college life. Our College Experience Workshop on March 29 at the Century House will prepare students and parents for the next step. Find workshop RSVP on Page 8 or online.

Our Foundation brightened the holidays for many Capital Region families in need. As part of the annual Coats for Kids program, we joined with the Commission on Economic Opportunity to deliver 148 winter coats to children in need at the Stepping Stones 1 school in Troy. After that, volunteers and staff packaged and delivered more than 150 Thanksgiving baskets with healthy, traditional meals for low-income families. Among many partners, we worked with the City of Cohoes and Marillac Family Shelter in Albany. In December, children at the Marillac Family Shelter received a visit from Santa Claus and a gift courtesy of our Foundation. Since 2003, we’ve helped deliver more than 1,200 Thanksgiving baskets and 1,200 winter coats to underprivileged families. Together, we look forward to another year of giving back.

Discover flexible distribution options and rollover IRA provisions,

which offer broader and easier ways to operate within IRS rules and access retirement accounts. Utilize estate planning tools such as the “stretch IRA” and maintain tax-advantaged investments over the lifetime of your beneficiaries. Also, IRS rules allow assets from company-sponsored retirement plans to be rolled into a Roth IRA, which can deliver other estate planning advantages.2 Call us today to discover more.
