  • I recently got a letter from faithful, long-distance members Bill and Tiffany Connolly, who live about two hours south of Albany in Ulster County. The letter praised CAP COMs Howie Silverman and Car Buyers Helpline expert Shoshannah Frank for outstanding service. As youll read on Pages 6 and 7, Bill and Tiffany contacted the Car Buyers Helpline about buying a pickup truck and, in just a few days, were at a dealership, taking a test drive and securing a great low-rate Auto Loan from CAP COM. In their letter, Bill and Tiffany write: Youll want to be a CAP COM member simply for the great rates and excellent customer service. But our appreciation goes beyond that. CAP COM really has reached a level that few companies ever achieve. Our services and products range far beyond car buying and Auto Loans.

On Page 10, youll hear from Jeuillie Keegan, who recently switched her Checking Account to CAP COM. Jeuillie tells us: When I walked in the door for the first time, I was met with a smile. CAP COM was eager to engage me immediately. Jeuillies experience at our Colonie Branch on New Karner Road is very common. We work hard to deliver great in-person service.

And, as youll read on Page 12, that unique service will soon have a new home in our Brunswick Branch on Hoosick Road. We are all excited for the October debut of this convenient branch in the heart of Rensselaer County. The CAP COM of today can truly meet all your needs. Just ask the Mele family of Colonie. The familys six children are CAP COM members and the oldest, Sarah, is a CAP COM Cares Foundation scholarship winner. Sarah and her siblings use our unique parent-child Youth Account options ranging from our Great Grades Savings Program to our College Bound Program. We take pride in the stories of all our members those from downstate to those living in the greater Capital Region; from our young members to active professionals; from the longtime faithful to the newly welcomed. I invite you to read through these stories and ask yourself: Where will my CAP COM story go next?

    Sincerely,

  • Member Courtesy Pay and Member Courtesy Pay Plus offer members who opt in up to $500* in overdraft protection. Member Courtesy Pay covers checks and preauthorized deductions (ACH withdrawals). The Plus package includes all of the features of Member Courtesy Pay, but also protects your Debit Card purchases and ATM transactions. As of Aug. 15, checks, ATM withdrawals and Debit Card payments without Member Courtesy Pay may be declined. Members can go online, call or ask at a branch to complete an opt-in form. This service will help members avoid the embarrassment of an unexpectedly declined transaction or returned check. Youll be opting in for peace of mind, said Director of Operations Support Lena Wilkins.

After you opt in, the Credit Union will pay your overdraft transactions up to $500.* A $25 Member Courtesy Pay fee will be assessed for each transaction. Members will be notified by e-mail or postal mail after each Member Courtesy Pay transaction. CAP COM also has overdraft plans including a Checking Account Line-of-Credit and Transfer-from-Savings options. Even if you have these overdraft options, Member Courtesy Pay is an important added line of protection. At the ATM: ATM withdrawals will access your overdraft reserves to provide cash. However, Checking Account balances reported at ATMs will not include overdraft reserve amounts.

Member Courtesy Pay works like a Checking Account Line-of-Credit, however Member Courtesy Pay balances must be paid in full within 45 days. For new Checking Accounts, members can opt in for $100 Member Courtesy Pay overdraft protection during the first 90 days. After 90 days and upon meeting account eligibility qualifications, members may request that the overdraft amount be increased to $500. Members who opt in for Member Courtesy Pay and have Checking Accounts older than 90 days can immediately request up to $500 in overdraft protection. Overdraft protection amounts will remain at $500 for Member Courtesy Pay plans set up prior to Aug. 18, 2010, unless you are otherwise notified. For Colonie mom Christine Mele, CAP COMs Youth Accounts are a teaching tool. Its important for children to learn how to budget and save. They need to learn those skills before they start earning money, Christine said. The oldest of the six Mele children, Sarah, is now in her first year at Northeastern University in Boston. She was the first to sign up for a CAP COM Youth Account. Brother James, now a senior at South Colonie High School, soon got his own Young Adult Checking Account. Now, he and Sarah look at their accounts online. They can see how much they have and how much they need to save, Christine said. Christine first learned of CAP COMs teen options at a South Colonie High School Dollars for Scholars event two years ago. This year, Sarah won a $2,500 Weidner Ed Davis Scholarship from our Foundation.

The younger Mele siblings, ages 4 to 13, are enrolled in our Great Grades and seasonal Reading Programs. The Reading Programs give kids $3 Saving Account deposits for up to five short book summaries or drawings they submit. I wish someone paid me to read when I was young! I read so many books over the summer, Sarah said.

  • CAP COM Associate Howie Silverman helped the couple complete Auto Loan forms and applications. Meanwhile, the truck dealer faxed final documents. Having someone stay after their shift to help a customer for even a few minutes is almost unheard of, but not at CAP COM, Bill and Tiffany said.

After signing off on a great low-rate Auto Loan, Bill and Tiffany returned to the dealer and drove off with their new truck. Car Buyers Helpline and CAP COM took all the legwork out of the equation. It was professional, direct and easy, Bill and Tiffany said.

Foundation volunteers recently helped children at Albanys Marillac Family Shelter enjoy their first horseback ride, savor ice cream treats, and take stock of new backpacks filled with essential school supplies. The annual event brings community partners together and creates fun and laughter for families living at the shelter. The children and volunteers played sports and made new friends. As part of our annual Back to School Backpack Program, our Foundation brings 250 backpacks to Capital Region organizations like Marillac that support children and families in need. Making memories and helping young students get a strong start to their school year is an important piece of our Foundations community impact.

Prior to 2010, retirement investors could convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA only if their modified adjusted gross income was less than $100,000. Starting this year, all investors, regardless of income, can convert to a Roth IRA. In addition, tax payments resulting from a conversion made in 2010 can be spread over two years, which may lessen the tax bite. Conversion advantages will differ among investors and critical factors that need to be considered include: expected retirement income, age, and future tax rates.

Our Advisors will also review benefits like tax-free withdrawals on qualified distributions1 or a sustained investment plan leading to larger sums to bequeath to heirs. Well help you find a prudent strategy for your financial future.

COMING SOON! Brunswick BranchCAP COM will open its 10th Capital Region branch at 799 Hoosick Road (Route 7) in Brunswick in October. The branch will be located on the site of the former Action Subaru dealership near Rensselaer Honda. At CAP COM, we often say: Before we put up branches, we put down roots. Weve recently worked with Rensselaer County community groups like Seton Health and the Brunswick Little League. And today, we are excited to bring our distinct brand of member service to a new community, said Brunswick Branch Manager Barb Borter. Like many of our branches, the Brunswick Branch will feature a childrens play area, a member computer station and photocopier, a free coin machine, and a complimentary coffee and tea station. Well see you soon!
