DALI – the simple, versatiledigital lighting solution

OSRAM GmbH

DALI is an international standard created specifically for digital lighting control.

DALI provides a single interface for all electronically controlled light sources in an easy-to-install and versatile system.

DALI provides almost unlimited scalability of lighting control systems.

DALI is cost-effective through energy-savings and is easy to manage.

Created by Europe’s leading lighting manufacturers, DALI is firmly established all over the world.

DALI’s benefits at a glance

International standard❚ Interchangeability of differentmanufacturers’ equipment❚ Designed specifically for commercialand architectural lighting❚ Future-proof

Cost-effectiveness❚ Intelligent lighting management (maximis-ing service life and saving energy)❚ Low installation costs (simplewiring, fewer and low-cost components)❚ Low maintenance costs

Simple planning and installation❚ Single-cable solution (no additionalbus cable required)❚ Simple wiring (no observance of polarity, any topology)❚ Flexible lighting design

Versatility❚ Freely addressable DALI operatingdevices for scalable lighting scenes (fromworkplace to room, to floor, to building)❚ Lighting group configuration and recon-figuration by software (no hard-wiring

and rewiring)❚ Interoperability with buildingmanagement systems

Digital system❚ Distributed intelligence (no externalswitching relays, local storage ofup to 16 lighting scenes on one DALIoperating device)❚ Automated functions (e.g. sensor-controlled dimming and switching)❚ Individual status reporting andsystem monitoring

Benefits for architects

The interaction of architecture and lightbrings buildings to life. By offeringarchitects complete freedom of choice,DALI systems give them the means toturn a vision into reality.

Mix and matchDALI is an international standard. All majormanufacturers offer DALI-compliantlighting control devices which are availablefor all kinds of light sources. Architectscan thus combine lighting solutions frommultiple manufacturers and use differenttypes of luminaires in one installation, givingthemselves total artistic freedom.

Scene-based lightingUsing different lighting scenes, the moodand function of rooms or areas of a building,or even the character of a building itself, can be changed at the touch of a button.

Meeting people’s needsGood lighting meets the visual, emotionaland biological needs of the people using abuilding.Optimum conditions can be created by meansof automated dimming and switching, usingdaylight and occupancy sensors, for example.

5DALI provides an unbeatable combination ofcost-effectiveness, versatility and simplicity.

Cost-effectiveDALI saves time – and money – whenspecifying a lighting system. With fewer

components and simple wiring, DALI lightingcontrol systems offer intelligent scene-basedlighting management at low cost. And sincethe luminaires are grouped using softwareinstead of hard-wiring, changes can bemade at any point up to the commissioningstage purely by reprogramming, without theexpense of redesigning or rewiring.

VersatileDALI replaces inflexible 1-10V analoguesystems. Distributed intelligence ensuresflexible control of individual luminaires, light groups and networks. Luminairescan be freely assigned to different groupsto create flexible lighting scenes for

workplaces, rooms, floors and buildings. Asan internationally established standard, DALIis interoperable with all building managementsystems. Lighting scenes can therefore beconfigured, reconfigured, saved and calledup again on a central computer, meeting

changing requirements with total flexibilitythroughout the system’s life.

Simple and intelligentDALI provides a single interface for all typesof electronic control gear (ECG) and lightingcontrol devices. Light fittings from anymanufacturer and of any load type can be usedin one installation, as long as they are fittedwith DALI ECG, thus removing the constraintscreated by proprietary systems.DALI is easy to use. Thanks to local lightingintelligence of the ECG, fewer controls arenecessary for changing lighting scenes andeven first-time users can quickly learn tooperate groups of lights.

As a single-cable digital system, DALI is notonly easy to install, but also extremely cost-effective, saving both time and resources.

Wiring made simple

Wiring is done using only a standard mains-rated 5-core cable that handles powersupply and DALI communications, so noseparate bus cable or special tools arerequired.Since the polarity of the wiring need not beobserved and offering complete freedomof topology, DALI avoids the wiring errorscommon with 1-10V systems.

Digital means simple and flexibleUsing a digital system, there is no need towire luminaires in groups. The system issimply programmed and, if requirementschange, it can be reprogrammed, thusavoiding costly rewiring.

Switching relays are unnecessary becauseswitching is done locally by the ballaststhemselves.DALI can easily be integrated into a buildingmanagement system by means of a simplegateway interface.Testing, fault-finding and commissioningare simplified and time is saved thanksto central monitoring of luminaire status.

DALI advanced lighting control systemsoffer a wide range of benefits, including costeffectiveness, sustainability, ease of use, central monitoring and occupant-comfort.

Cost-effectiveness

DALI keeps running costs low throughintelligent management of lamps andballasts (i.e. dimming and switching), thusmaximising their service life, saving energyand reducing replacement costs.

SustainabilityDALI represents a sustainable investment. It is versatile and scalable enough toaccommodate any changes in room usesand lighting requirements throughout thelife of the building.

Ease of useDALI lighting systems are easy to operate andprovide a high degree of convenience. They

can be configured flexibly for task-related

lighting scenes, permitting multiple use ofrooms. They can also be reconfigured withoutrewiring when tenancies change, for example. The digital system permits extensive automa-tion of lighting using daylight sensors, timecontrols and occupancy sensors.

Central monitoringDALI’s 2-way digital communications featuresystem monitoring, status feedback andfault reporting, thus reducing maintenancecosts, and enabling lighting groups to bereconfigured centrally. DALI can thereforebe integrated as a sub-system in the buildingmanagement system.

Occupant comfortOccupants enjoy a pleasant working environ-ment due both to the ease with which theycan change lighting scenes and to automatedcomfort features, such as dimming andswitching in response to ambient light levels

and occupancy.
