Why choose Glamox DALI?

What is DALI?

With Glamox DALI we offer you a safe and well-proven solution. The system consists of DALI components that are thoroughly tested both individually and combined as a system.

A worldwide standard in lighting controlDALI = Digital Addressable Lighting Interface is a trademark for a digital, network-based system for light control. The underlying technology was established by a consortium of lighting equipment manufacturers in 1997 – 98 as an open standard. The technical standard is IEC 62386. You can find an overview of the standard on page 18.

A dynamic standardThe DALI standard and protocol has been expanded several times when new devices have been included as new part numbers in the standard. Each new device has also been given a new device type number (DTx). Important updates have been, Emergency light (part 202; DT1), LED drivers (Part 207; DT6) and colour/Tuneable white control (Part 209; DT8).

General technical system data• Up to 64 addresses, 16 groups and 16 scenes• Up to 250mA on the BUS• Up to 300 metres standard installation cable or maximum 2Volt

signal drop on the cable

The next generationDALI version 2 is a new step in the development of the standard. In the new version, control and input devices will be included. DALI-2 also adds a lot of new functionality to existing devices. As opposed to DALI version 1, DALI-2 involves independent verification of test results, not only a self-declaration.

Applications using Glamox DALICommon challenges

Entrance area with reception

A common requirement for entrance areas is to have the light go on/dim up one hour before normal opening hours. That way the office welcomes even the first occupants in the morning.

Open-plan office

For an open-plan office, it is important to focus on safety and comfort as well as energy efficiency. When working alone in the office it is important that you feel safe and comfortable. Even if the lux level on your work station is adequate, it is not very user oriented if your surroundings are left in total darkness. To have the possibility to dim the light level in a large open area is always a relevant feature.

Control room without daylight

In a room with no natural light, it is beneficial if the colour temperature and intensity of the light can be adjusted throughout the day. This is a way to simulate the cycle of daylight and is often referred to as Human Centric Lighting (HCL). HCL will help the workers maintain a good daily rhythm, stay focused during the shift and prevent sleep disturbances.

Stairwell

The staircase should always be illuminated when there are people present in the building.

Entrance area with reception

RTC timer + Sequencer + Sensor-R

The RTC timer turns on the reception and outdoor lights in the morning. The RTC timer and the sequencer start a light sequence at lunch and another one at the end of the work day.

Open-plan office

Sensor-R + cross-switch

Divide the landscape into sensor control zones. Light management can be based on presence, daylight detection or a combination. NB: We recommend to avoid placing the daylight sensors too close to the windows.

Control room without daylight

CCT-timer + Sensor-R

The CCT timer allows you to design a daily cycle that changes the colour temperature and intensity of the light to imitate daylight. NB: Requires luminaires with CCT.

Stairwell

Sensor-S + Repeater

Use long delay time on sensors to ensure that the light will remain on during a normal work day. Ordinary DALI communication has a limit of approximately 300 metre cable. If you need more than this, you can use a repeater that amplifies your signal.

Meeting room

A meeting room can be used for several different purposes that require different light scenarios, like official meetings, video conferences and social events. Even the cleaning staff may benefit a customised light setting.

Corridor

When a corridor is located close to a work area, the light level changes should be slow/soft and kept to a minimum to avoid disturbing people working. The corridor should always be illuminated when there are people in the work area.

Cell office

For a cell office, it’s very important that the light level isn’t influenced by people passing by. We also recommend that the end user has an option to manually override the default sensor settings.

Industry

Divide the plant into sensor control zones. Light management can be based on presence, daylight detection or a combination. NB: We recommend to avoid placing the daylight sensors too close to the windows.

Sensor-R + Cross-switch / wireless cross-switch

In addition to sensor management, it is often desirable to have the option to override the default level. This is done by using a switch to either dim up/down or set a pre-programmed level. By using a wireless switch, the light can easily be controlled from the work station.

Applications using Glamox DALIOur recommendation

Corridor

Sensor-R

The light in the corridor is set to a standby level of 50% when there is presence in the work zones close to the corridor. We recommend using longer fade time than default.

Industry

Sensor-S + Expander

In a large industrial area, you will soon exceed the maximum number of addresses on a DALI loop (max 64). You can expand the DALI bus by using DALI Expanders. Each expander can have up to 64 luminaires.

Meeting room

Sensor-R + BT panel + Relay

In the meeting room, you want to be able to set different scenarios, depending on the use. By using a relay module, you can also control the canvas/blinds. Everything can be controlled from your mobile since the panel has a Bluetooth interface.

IEC 62386 The international standard for DALI technology

IEC 62386, the international DALI standard, is published in multiple Parts by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The table below shows the status of different Parts of IEC 62386. Parts in cursive were still in progress when this brochure was printed. IEC working group (WG11 of TC34) is responsible for writing and maintaining IEC 62386.

So, what is DALI-2 then. DALI-2 is based on version 2 of IEC 62386, which also, for the first time includes control devices. Most parts of the DALI-2 is published but some parts are missing a proper test sequence in order to start the certification process for the product.
