Light is fundamental to CCTV. Without light no images are possible as it is light reflected from the World around you that makes the World visible both to the human eye and to the CCTV camera.
Light is energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation. The wavelength of light governs the colour and type of light. Only a very narrow range of wavelengths from approximately 400nm (violet) to 700nm (red) is visible to the human eye. However, CCTV cameras can detect light outside the range of the human eye allowing them to be used not only with White-Light but also with Infra-Red (730-950nm) for night-time surveillance. Light travels at the colossal speed of 300,000,000m per second from source. Light travels in straight lines and causes shadowing where it is blocked.
Definition of Infra-RedInfra-Red is a light that the human eye cannot see but monochrome or day / night CCTV cameras can. It is available in a range of wavelengths including 730nm (visible red glow) to semi-covert 850nm or fully covert 940nm. Distances are always reduced when using higher wavelength lamps.
Definition of White-LightWhite-Light is light that is visible both to humans and to the CCTV camera. True White-Light is a mixture of light from 400-700nm to represent all the colours of the spectrum. It can be used with colour cameras to provide colour CCTV images at night.

Why use LED illumination:LEDs are the fastest growing lighting solution for CCTV applications. They are extremely efficient and offer unbeatable reliability. LEDs offer the lowest possible running costs (less than 100 watts for highest power units) with the longest operating life (up to 10 years).
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are semiconductors that naturally emit a narrow band of light. They are a relatively new development in lighting but their usage is expanding rapidly on the back of clear technical advantages. LEDs are comparatively expensive to purchase but provide extremely long life up to 100,000 hours. In comparison fluorescent bulbs typically last 10,000 hours and incandescent bulbs 1,000. LED efficiency is typically 80-90% with the greatest efficiency coming from LEDs producing red light. Advantages of LEDs include extremely low electrical consumption, low operating temperatures and continuity of colour through the operating life of the LED. Unlike traditional bulbs LEDs are also highly durable, insensitive to vibration and their hard casing makes them difficult to break. They are also capable of emitting light at a given wavelength without the need for a filter and are quick start devices. Power management and thermal management are important to ensure LEDs deliver expected performance.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTSNew Surface Mount Technology (SMT) LEDs are more robust than traditional through hole LEDs, offer better thermal management and allow the LEDs to be “driven” harder without compromising performance. All GANZ LEDs use SMT LED technology.

IR750/50180Ultimate Long Range Infra Red Illuminator
The new IR750/50180 is a high power, wide angle Infra-Red illuminator designed specifically to work with fully functional dome cameras. It incorporates the very latest surface mount, high output, high efficiency LEDs to deliver excellent night-time pictures with improved optical output and outstanding reliability.
IR750/50180 is designed for long range dome applications and provides distances up to 150m at 50 degrees and 100m at 180 degrees. With two units full 360° illumination can be achieved for dome cameras. IR750 features Vari-Focal Illumination™ to increase flexibility on site and a single product can be adapted to meet the needs of most installations. Each unit is fitted with a unique Cool Running™ thermal management system to control LED output and LED life. Consequently the IR series has a projected working life of 10 years.
IR series illuminators are provided complete with bracket and power supply and are designed for installation flexibility making them suitable for all low light installations. The power supply has a number of control features including adjustable power output, photocell and telemetry control.

WL50/100Short-Medium Range White-Light Illuminators
WL units provide perfect White-Light and can be used to provide CCTV lighting together with pedestrian and ambient lighting from a single light source. WL50 and WL100 incorporate the very latest surface mount, high output, high efficiency LEDs to deliver excellent night-time pictures with improved optical output and outstanding reliability. WL50 is available in a range of different beam angles. WL100 is equipped with Vari-Focal Illumination™ allowing the angle of light projection to be altered to fit the specific demands of an installation. Each unit is fitted with a unique Cool Running™ thermal management system to control LED output and LED life. Consequently WL series illuminators have a projected working life of more than ten years.

1) INFRA-RED OR WHITE-LIGHT?Identifying the purpose of the system identifies the type of light to use.
Infra-Red light provides greater distance, a varying degree of invisibility (depending on the exact wavelength) and no light pollution. Infra-Red is light designed only to be used by mono or day/night CCTV cameras.
White-Light provides the opportunity to illuminate an area for pedestrians, staff or vehicles in addition to the CCTV system. It can also be used as a visual deterrent when turned on if an intruder is detected.
2) ANGLE?The illumination should ideally match the angle the camera and lens set-up in order to provide best performance. If not, and too narrow an illumination angle is chosen, the camera will simply see a bright spot in the middle of the scene and the contrast between light and dark areas on scene will be too great to provide high quality images. Illumination which is too wide wastes energy and reduces achievable distance.

3) DISTANCE?
After selecting the angle, the next consideration is distance. How far should the lighting illuminate? Installers and specifiers should be aware that as angle increases, distance decreases.

4) CAMERA AND LENS CONSIDERATIONS
Exact performance of any illuminator in a CCTV system is dependant upon the camera and lens combination used. For best results a high sensitivity camera (for IR projects an IR sensitive camera) should be used with a high transmission lens. Generally a CCTV imaging system (camera, lens, illumination) is only as good as its weakest link.

All cameras need light to provide the best images, especially dome cameras. Dome cameras tend to use smaller CCD’s and therefore tend to need more light than standard cameras. Providing lighting for Domes is a challenge as the light cannot be positioned to follow the movement of the camera.
THE SOLUTIONS1: WIDE ANGLE LIGHTINGAchieving 360° degree lighting for Domes has traditionally been expensive, requiring multiple illuminators. However, new wide angle GANZ illuminators provide illumination angles up to 180 degrees and are purpose designed for dome camera applications. It is now possible to illuminate 360 degrees with only two illuminators, at significantly less cost and with less installation effort than ever before. Wide angle illumination is technically the best solution for dome cameras.

2: TARGET AREA ILLUMINATIONWhen a Dome is only concerned with specific security “hot-spots”, to limit light pollution, or to meet budgetary restraints, illumination can be targeted at specific vulnerable areas. Typically the Dome will track these areas on a pre-set tour and lighting can be used to illuminate each pre-set position such as an entrance point, or a very low lit area.
This method allows for greater distances to be covered with narrower angle illuminators. Using Vari-Focal lighting the exact beam angle from the illuminator can be adjusted on site to suit each pre-set position.
3: LOCAL AREA ILLUMINATIONIf lighting cannot be fitted at the Dome then it can be positioned at sensitive areas to flood the area of concern. This is local area illumination and the critical factor is to ensure that, when the dome is zoomed into the scene, the full screen is well illuminated.
SUMMARYLighting is critical to the performance of every CCTV system, especially those using fully functional Domes. Recent developments in wide angle illuminators make 360° degree illumination a real possibility for the first time. Installers also have the option of providing Target Area Illumination or Local Area Illumination where needed. Every dome camera now has the opportunity to be fitted with dedicated CCTV lighting to maximise performance. In

Don’t - Position the camera so it is looking directly into any lights
Don’t - Use IR illuminators with colour cameras. Colour cameras require White-Light illumination.
Don’t - Position the PSU so the illuminator is pointing at the photocell, otherwise when the light turns on the photocell will detect the light and turn the unit off.
Don’t - Wire power directly into the LED head. Always use the PSU supplied – it provides constant current supply to the LED head.

STANDARD BRACKETRY Illuminators are supplied with a Vari-Focal (VF bracket) to allow alteration of the beam angle, and a small circular U bracket which allows for up/down and left/right adjustment when fitted to a flat surface. The IR50 and WL50 are provided with a U bracket only.
WALL MOUNTWhen mounting to a wall the WB1 wall bracket can be used. The WB1 is a small L shaped bracket which provides up/down and left/right adjustment when used with the standard bracketry on Ganz illuminators.
PTZ MOUNTThe best solution for mounting with PTZ cameras is a flat sandwich bracket that fits between the camera housing and the PTZ motor. This bracket can have either one protruding arm for single unit installations (SB1), or two protruding arms for twin unit installations (DB2).
DOME MOUNTGANZ provide the PB-180 and PB-360 brackets for mounting with dome cameras. These brackets are 180 or 360° circular sandwich plates that fit between the top of a pole and the dome camera. The PB-180 and PB-360 have 2” PCD and 4” PCD mounting connections.
