Transcript of Lighting analysis location 1

When I did my lighting for Location 1, candles and a lamp with a bendable spine were used. The key lights were four candles in the centre of the set; the back light was the lamp, also used as the filler light. Since the light was too bright for the desired effect when directly facing the set, and covering it with a piece of clear, thin fabric didn't work well, I decided to use a light with a bendable spine. This lamp allowed me to manipulate the light by bending the lamp's spine to face the wall or ceiling, causing the light to reflect off of the pale surface and onto the set. This made the set dark enough for the candles light to have an effect, creating certain shadows, but not too dark that you couldn't see what was happening. For example, the writing on the paper.

When I first started to film, I knew it would be too dark to just have the candle light. So I brought in the light of a lamp to use as a filler light while the candle lights would remain as the key lights. This changes the lighting tremendously as each detail on the set could now be clearly seen when the lamp light reflected off the pale walls and onto the set.
