Little Things

The water library no longer carries Lake Line

as of mid-2007. Do we want to begin to hold

that periodical?

Page 4: Library Committee Meeting

Book Checkout System

There are 3273 books in the checkout system.

About 330 have been checked out in the last 3

years.

No weeding decisions will need to be made for

several years

The highest value of the system is for locating

books once they are checked out. So we are

barcoding theses to help locate them when

necessary.

Center usage of checkout

system

There has been a drop off in the system

usage. This is likely due to the fact that some

CFL members are not added to the system.

Checkout System: Thoughts?

Anything that can be improved. Is there any

other information you’d like.

Book Purchasing

Current proposed books add up to $757

We have been allotted $1000

We have an extra $243. Plus we should have

a back up or two in case one cannot ship in

time.

Digitization

We’ve finished digitizing the first round of

archives A-L

Currently 25% of our reprint collection is

digitized.

75% of our faculty-authored reprints are

digitized

Aim is for 100% of CFL related publications to

be digitized.

Problem: No comprehensive list of all individuals

(including LTER and students) who might have

published.

Page 10: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Why

Our digitized collection is difficult to access

and pretty confusing

Our collection does not allow us to share

publications with those outside the CFL, or

even those associated with the CFL, but off

the network

We lack the ability to share with other people

and institutions CFL publications and research

Page 11: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Why

Freely available

science correlates to

higher citation

impact (and hence

more readers) in

poorer countries From Science 2/20/09 “Open Access

and Global Participation in Science”

James A. Evans1* and Jacob

Reimer2”

Increase in citation of free

journals

Page 12: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Key components

Access: CFL members should be able to

access everything

Authentication: Those outside CFL should be

able to access some items, but only what we

allow them to access

Usability: Navigation and search should be

powerful and intuitive or else it will not be used

Adaptability: Should be able to be updated and

modified easily

Digital Library

Two test libraries have been set up using

content management systems

These systems, Drupal and Joomla, are both

free and open source and supported by a

broad community of users

Page 14: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Joomla

http://joomlalib.uwcfl

.org/ (then click

library)

Nice looking, easy

to maintain

This would best be

served by

categorizing by

author

Page 15: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Joomla

Weak search

interface

Best for browsing or

searching for

specific title

Page 16: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Joomla

Metadata is

weak, just pasted in

Items such as date

are altered

Page 17: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Drupal

http://uwcfl.org/libdrup/

Bibliographic software like we have now

This is a much stronger but much more complex system

Interface not as nice

Much more extensible (to a point)

Page 18: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Drupal

Search interface is

more powerful

Still not as good as

Endnote

Biblio has “filters”

but these can be

overwhelmed by

number of authors

Page 19: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Drupal

The display page

contains much more

information

Transferring

information is easy

Page 20: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Drupal

Drupal lists all

publications

Other users can see

a hyperlink (if

allowed) or can

request a copy of

the article

Authenticated users

are given a

download link

Page 21: Library Committee Meeting

Digital Library: Thoughts

What’s necessary, what’s not, what would we

like in the future (photos, gov. docs, etc.)

Library Floor Plan

At last year’s library seminar there was an

interest in adding furniture to the library

A grant for furniture will be submitted to UW

friends of the library if we decide to go this

route.
