In inglese esistono 4 tipi di periodi ipotetici:

Il periodo ipotetico generale o zero conditional

Il periodo ipotetico di primo tipo o first conditional

Il periodo ipotetico di secondo tipo o second conditional

Il periodo ipotetico di terzo tipo o third conditional

0 - Periodo ipotetico generale o zero conditional

Il periodo ipotetico generale si costruisce cos:


IF + Present Simple + Present Simple

If I eat too many cherries, I feel sick

If you go to bed very late, you feel tired the next day

E viene usato per riferirsi a fatti che sono generalmente veri:

If you cool water to 0 C, it freezes

questa azione d sempre lo stesso risultato

If I eat too many cherries, I feel sick

pu non essere vero per tutti, ma lo per me; infatti, ogni volta che mangiotroppe ciliege sto male


If people stop eating, they die

Quindi, lo zero conditional si utilizza quando il risultato sempre certo.

Attenzione

If pu essere sostituito con when/whenever senza cambio di significato. Nella frasenegativa, if not pu essere sostituito con unless (a meno che, a meno che non).

Whenever the weather is fine, we go to the beach

Unless it rains, I usually go shopping at the weekend

1 - Periodo ipotetico di primo tipo o first conditional


Il periodo ipotetico di primo tipo si costruisce cos:

IF + Present Simple + will/wont

If we dont hurry, we will miss the train

If you go to bed early, you wont feel tired the next day

Il periodo ipotetico di primo tipo si usa per parlare di una possibile condizione futura e delsuo probabile risultato.

Its raining! If you dont take the umbrella, you will get wet

If I get home late, my mother will get angry

Spesso si usa il First Conditional per fare promesse, minacce e anche per trattare e/o


accordarsi

If I meet Christopher, Ill call you straight away (promessa)

If you behave like that again, youll be punished (minaccia)

If you pass all your exams, Ill buy you a new bike (accordo)

Attenzione:

- la frase ipotetica (if) esprime unazione o situazione futura possibile; will/wont ne indicail risultato

- diversamente dallitaliano, in inglese non si usa mai la forma futura nella frase ipotetica(if)

Se il risultato non certo ma solo possibile, si usa might al posto di will


If I have enough money, I might buy a new boat

If you travel to Los Angeles, you might meet some famous movie stars

- If pu essere sostituito con when, ma pay attention: IF esprime la possibilit cheaccada qualcosa, WHEN si riferisce a ci che il soggetto reputa certo che accada.

If I find your hat, Ill let you know

When I get home, Ill have a rest

- Nella frase negativa, if not pu essere sostituito con unless (a meno che, a meno chenon).

Unless you tell me the truth, Ill call your mother

Unless its hot, we wont go to the beach on Saturday


2 - Periodo ipotetico di secondo tipo o second conditional

Il periodo ipotetico di secondo tipo si costruisce cos:

IF + Past Simple + would

If I had enough money, I would buy a new boat

If David loved Margie, he would marry her

Usiamo il periodo ipotetico di secondo tipo per riferirci a una situazione fittizia oimprobabile e immaginarne il risultato nel presente o nel futuro. La condizione fittizia, nonvera, perch diversa dai fatti che conosciamo


If my sister studied harder, she would pass her exams (ma mia sorella studiapoco)

If people didnt use their cars, there wouldnt be so much pollution (macontinuano a usare le auto)

If I spoke English, I would travel all over the world (ma non parlo inglese)

Attenzione:

Luso del Past Tense e di would non fanno riferimento al tempo passato, ma mettono inevidenza il fatto che Ci diverso dalla realt

If I didnt have to work, I would spend my time sunbathing (ma non potendomelopermettere, devo continuare a lavorare)

If I saw a ghost, I would run screaming (ma improbabile che veda un fantasma)


Al posto di would si possono usare could e might

If I had not already booked the restaurant, I could come with you to the pub (senon avessi gi prenotato il ristorante, potrei venire con voi al pub)

If Emily went to the party, she might have a nice time (se andasse alla festa, forsesi divertirebbe)

Dopo if si pu usare were al posto di was (usato pi nellinglese colloquiale) conI/she/he/it

If I were the President, I would increase the salaries

If she were a good cook, I would ask her to cook me a Mexican meal

Lespressione If I were you (se fossi in te) spesso usata per dare consigli

If I were you, I would swim a lot to keep fit


Today is your dads birthday. If I were you, I would buy him a box of chocolates

3 - Periodo ipotetico di terzo tipo o third conditional

Il periodo ipotetico di terzo tipo si costruisce cos:

IF + Past Perfect + would have + past participle

If Rose had come on her usual bus, I would have met her

If they hadnt read the newspaper, they wouldnt have known about the strike

Si usa per riferirsi a eventi o condizioni passate che non si sono verificate perch non si svolta lazione del periodo ipotetico.


Vale a dire, il Third Conditional immagina cosa sarebbe avvenuto se unazione fosse statadiversa da ci che stata in realt.

If my car had started immediately, I would have arrived at work on time

We wouldnt have gone to the theatre if we had known it was sold out

Attenzione:

Anche in questo caso al posto di would have si possono usare could have e mighthave

If our team had won this match, they could have been at the top of the league

If he had checked the timetable, he might have caught the 8 oclock train

If the interviewed hadnt gone badly, the manager might have offered George ajob in the company


Nota Bene:

In tutti i periodi ipotetici sopra descritti si possono invertire le due parti della frase:

If we dont hurry, we wont be able to finish our homework (in questo caso,dopo la frase con IF si deve mettere la virgola)

We wont be able to finish our homework if we dont hurry (in questo casonon si mette la virgola prima di IF)
