1 11 March 2015 Dear Parents, Old Girls and friends of Girls High, Challenges and motivation for a Hockey Astro. Our hockey teams continue to be a source of immense pride for our school and throughout the years many of our girls have been chosen to play for the SA and North West teams. However, the game has changed dramatically since astro turfs were introduced, as the game requires a different game plan and skills. Our grass fields are simply not producing the quality of competitive players we are used to showcasing at tournaments. Playing hockey on grass in the contemporary sporting environment has sadly had a negative impact on the standard of our girls’ hockey skills. As traditional grass hockey is much slower, the player cannot adjust to the faster hand eye co- ordination required when playing a match on astro turf. We are used to outstanding sporting achievements, we expect our players to have a competitive edge and greater opportunities to be selected for provincial and national teams. However, this can now only be achieved when practising on an astro. Girls High is known for its vision and long term planning to remain ahead of the field in all spheres of school life. The list of already completed projects is extensive, but right now, the school is in critical need of the re-construction of its hockey fields to accommodate the astro. This is an extremely expensive project and the benefits and costs were carefully weighed and considered long before the commitment to build began. The school has raised a substantial amount of money over an extended period from renting out our facilities during school holidays and having staff members who are prepared to work at these times. This has enabled us to initiate the project, but the reality is that a conservative amount of one million rand is needed to see the project through to completion. The contractor is willing to stretch the completion date until we have sufficient finances but this is clearly not a sustainable approach. We are asking all our parents, old girls and business associates to please make a significant donation towards the Girls High Astro Turf. We are mindful of the fact that finances may be a challenge currently, as well as the fact that your own daughter may not play hockey. However the improvement of all our facilities has been and always will be about ensuring access to quality opportunities for current and future generations of learners. This project is about so much more than hockey, it fulfils the vision we all share of a prestigious school that remains a leader on the provincial and national stage of education. It is time to leave your own legacy to show your appreciation for and improve upon the facilities your daughter presently enjoys. The building of the astro is only the first phase of a 3 year project. We will need to renovate the “Chapel” on the East House field into a similar building as useful and pleasant as our current Pavilion. The project management plan anticipates the full completion of the project in 2018, but much depends on your positive response to the school’s ambitious plan to remain a centre of excellence and fulfil the economic requirements of this project.

Dear Parents, Old Girls and friends of Girls High, Challenges and motivation for a Hockey Astro.

As traditional grass hockey is much slower, the player cannot adjust to the faster hand eye co-ordination required when playing a match on astro turf.

Raffle

Girls High has an unwritten, but deliberate approach to school fundraising that avoids involving parents in activities that are costly in time and convenience. We know that it is problematic for many parents to attend and support multiple events and therefore rarely ask for direct assistance. However, this project requires every parent, learner and old girl to contribute and so a simple, but effective strategy has been devised.

There will be 3 raffles this year where the girls will be responsible for raising as much capital as possible and we humbly request that you support them in their own participation in this project. Of course there will be fantastic prizes, but we are hopeful that the communal sense of responsibility and success will drive all families to fill each raffle list completely. Donations

In the case of a project of this size it is inconceivable that it can be completed without the additional and substantial financial assistance. Please consider that your contributions will earn you a place in the history of a school that recently celebrated its 110th birthday. Donations of above R5 000 will be acknowledged on a name board. This is the time to make your mark on the school and take your place in the historical records of the school by making a sizeable contribution to a project that will have a long term and lasting effect on the reputation and ongoing excellence of Girls High.
